Sorry to bother the fine people of Dakka again about my up and coming mech guard, but we all have to start somewhere. Here is the list I plan to start my first battles with, and if you could please, give me advice on it.

I know I mentioned before not included too detailed points costs for individual models and/or upgrades. I fear you have now strayed too far in the opposite direction.

When I add your list up, I get 1090 points. So either your list is over the 1000 points mentioned in your subject, or I am not able to understand your shorthand. The failing may well be mine, but if you look at how many people post here, you should see a trend. For example, if I was posting your list as I interpreted it, it would look something like this...

Total Roster Cost: 1090

HQ: Company Command Squad (145 pts)
+ Meltagun x4
+ Chimera w/ HHF

Troops: Veteran Squad (155 pts)
+ Meltagun x3
+ Chimera w/ HHF

Troops: Veteran Squad ( 190 pts)
+ Plasma gun x3
+ Lascannon
+ Chimera w/ HHB

Troops: Veteran Squad ( 170 pts)
+ Plasma gun x3
+ Chimera w/ HHF

Heavy Support: 1 Leman Russ Battle Tank, 150 pts

Heavy Support: 1 Leman Russ Battle Tank, 150 pts

Fast Attack: 1 Vendetta, 130 pts

Where did I go wrong? or were you just over?

Ohh... yeah, it's over. Me and my bad math. I'll rework the list and post it.

Edit: A Chimera Vet squad w/ Meltas is 135 pts, no? I think you added per model instead of 1 cost for the whole squad.

I think you are thinking per model, mate. In command squads it's per model, with vets you just pay 1 lump sum of 10 points for a melta upgrade. Since a Chimera with no paid upgrades is 55 pts, and a Vet squad is 70, it's 135 pts.

I have seen this issue come up before. I agree that p100 of the IG codex is not very clear. Ask around your FLGS or eleswhere on the web. It is a per gun cost, not a per unit cost.

In the options, Meltagun is singular, so if we go by the 'lump sum' argument, you exchange 3 lasguns for 1 meltagun, leaving 2 of your veterans weaponless.

Huh, well with Command Squads they make the distinction of "per model" costs as opposed to "4 troops can replace their lasguns with" and then they list the prices of what they can all replace their Lasguns with. I assumed that since they didn't with Vet squads, it was a per unit cost upgrade. But, I think I'll listen to the people who have been playing longer than I have. I'll come back with a retooled list.

Listen to us, but don't be afraid to be skeptical and check around. If a MOD gives you a specific direction, do it (or leave), but most of the time this is just a friendly conversation.

Your current list is only 70pts over with the right costs, so you could just downgrade one of the plasmavet squads to meltavets and dump one of the chimeras in favour loading the transport-less squad into the vendetta instead, and have an even 1000pts:

HQ:
CCS w/ 4x Meltaguns - 90pts

Troops:
Vets w/ 3x Meltas - 100pts
Chimera - 55pts
Vets w/ 3x Meltas - 100pts
Chimera - 55pts
Vets w/ 3x Plasmaguns - 115pts
Chimera - 55pts

Fast Attack:
Vendetta - 130pts

Heavy Support:
LRBT - 150pts
LRBT - 150pts

Total - 1000pts

Thanks, Avatar. Now I can have my tank goodness... yummy. And I have a flyin' tank busting squad to boot! Any other comments/criticism about my unit choices?

This army will really struggle with DoW set up. You will start with your HQ and one vet sqd and their transport on the table. They are not capable of holding for two turns very well.

I'm not entirely familiar with DoW. Well, I know what it is, but I haven't played it before. Should I reallocate a chimera or should I rewrite my troops choices?

Dawn of War is hard for MANY army set ups to deal with. For Dawn of War set up, I would suggest holding the entire army in reserve, then second turn driving on and messing face.

Thanks, Sekai. I've read some battle reports where that tactic is used, and it seems effective. I'll post my first DoW game (with pics) for everyone's reading pleasure.

You are in no way obligated to have 1 HQ and 2 Troops deployed, you are allowed to have a maximum of 1 HQ and 2 Troops deployed, which does not mean you must have 1 HQ and 2 Troops deployed.

Saying that you will start with the HQ and a vet's squad is a fallacy.

Also, CustomLime, don't forget that Vendettas have the Scout rule; I know just how enemy armies love a Fast Skimmer bristling with Lascannons and holding a BS4 Melta squad flying in behind their tanks, so use Outflank to your advantage.

In regular games, the Scout move is also a great asset, allowing you to get close enough to vehicles to move 6", disembark Meltas 2", and unleash Melta death at Melta range (since the Scout move requires you to be more than 12" from an enemy after the move, the 6" move and 2" disembark in the first movement phase allows you to maintain melta range) but also be able to still fire all 3 of your TL Lascannons at other enemy armour.

In DoW, with a list like this, if I was going first I would consider deploying 2 chimera forward, the CCS in the back and walking everything else on turn 1. If the opponent deploys units pre game, light them up with the chimeras and blow them away with everything that rolls on the board. If the opponent elects to roll everything on turn 1 or is a reserve list, pull the chimeras back.

If I was going 2nd, I would likely roll everything on turn 1 and pop a lot of smoke.

CustomLime... to answer your question on the wording for Vets and their special weapons...

Up to three other Veterans may replace their lasguns with:

Note 'Up to', as that is the key. I will disagree with 'Foolishmortal' that the IG codex is 'not very clear', it is actually one of the better written ones that I own. The difference between the CCS/PCS is because /every/ Vet can have a upgrade/special equipment. While the Vet squad, at most 8 Vets can have unique wargear (if you include Demolitions Demo Charge). Sergeant, Vox, up to 3 special weapons, 2 taken up for a HWS and the Demo charge. They have to word it the way they do because there are a few Vets that will not have special equipment (2-3) where every guy in the PCS/CCS can have it.

I hope this clears up things for you, or helps you understand it easier.

I did not mean to imply that the IG codex as a whole is unclear, just page 100 compared to page 92 where it gives the weapon costs "per model"

I think the IG codex in general is well written. I am now trying to play 5th ed necrons and I have HUGE amounts of new respect for how well the IG codex is written.
