I am seriously considering building my own gaming table. The LHS has a serious lack of decent terrain and tables. I have come up with some plans that will allow me to make a portable, folding, gaming table that can be used as a 4x4 and a 4x6 so that it can be used with Warhammer and Warmachine. The problem I am running into is the theme for the board. I would like to make a series of terrain that have a unified theme for the board that would be applicable in multiple gaming systems. I was kind of leaning toward a "trench" board, but I see this as having a problem, and that is static trenches....if I build the trenches into the board then that is it, but if I go with a modular board then you run into the problem of it being much easier to eyeball distances. I was also thinking of some kind of "ruined factory" but I would want it to be technology neutral.

So as I am sitting here brainstorming, anyone wanna care to throw some ideas out?

How about a solid flat board with modular terrain pieces? That way it wouldn't be easy to eyeball distances. Most LGS do this. Maybe add some static but not too different parts on the board itself, like a slight elevation.

As for the theme: best to go natural or medieval. At least with medieval you can use it in 40k and justify that it's an undeveloped rural world. Sooo, still lots of options: forests, deserts, snowscapes, swamps, lava Mordor worlds, etc. When it comes to buildings, there are companies out there with Gothic buildings (Pegasus comes to mind) that doesn't rely on the Sci-Fi aspect of it, so they would still apply to other games. Those can be made into your "ruined factory" type of buildings. Ancient ruins also fit the genre in any game system, and there are sure as hell lots of terrain pieces available and tutorials on how to make them.
