Renegade Inquisitor with a Bound Daemon
Tied and gagged in the back of your car
|
Been planning this one for a while. Got a few friends to start doing an Inquisimunda campaign. I hope other members of my group will also post their works of awesome in this thread as well. We haven't started the campaign just yet, I still need to finish cleaning up the core ruleset (which I'll make available in this thread when they're complete), but we're constantly putting our warbands together.
The campaign will take place in the same system as my Space Marine chapter, the Gallowsmen ( here), allowing for the intervention of NPCs of all races and factions.
First up is my warband leader, the once respected Inquisitor Magus Hawthorne. Once a respected Inquisitor within the Petrefax system, Hawthorne was known for his large sphere of influence and zealous determination. Once a by-the-book puritan, Hawthorne was on the fast track to becoming a powerful Inquisitor Lord. However, the many decades that he spent building up his admirable reputation were squandered entirely in a single moment.
It was during a campaign with fellow Inquisitor Hermes Trismegistus that it happened. The two were working together on an assignment to infiltrate and destroy a large chaos cult located in the lower layers of the Petrefax metropolitan sector. Hawthorne and Hermes managed to find the cult just as they were beginning the ceremony to summon the greater daemon that was the object of their worship into the material realm. In a desperate attempt to stop the ritual, Hawthorne dove into the circle and began wreaking havoc against the cult's members, but it was too late. The confusion that Hawthorne caused was able to interfere with the ritual, enough so that the daemon was unable to take physical form on its own, but instead it grasped for the Inquisitor himself. Hawthorne's body spasmed and warped as he tore through the cultists. In a final desperate moment, Hawthorne used his potent psychic abilities to create a purifying flame that filled the entire room, killing every cultist and leaving the inquisitor himself horribly mutilated.
Hawthorne's aids recovered what remained of his body before returning to the surface. Although he survived the ordeal, all that remained of his body was his head, spinal column, and heart. The rest of his body was either warped beyond belief or burnt to a crisp. Hawthorne's reputation was just as flayed by the ordeal as his body. Word quickly spread throughout the inquisition that he had been tainted by the powers of chaos that had consumed his flesh. Many of his former friends and allies would soon come to ignore or even antagonize him, even publicly. Rumour had it that the daemon that had almost possessed him was never truly banished, or worse yet, that he had been pretending to be on the side of the Emperor all along.
As Hawthorne's sphere of influence and allies began to shrink, his world view became more and more cynical. He could no longer trust the Imperium he once served with so much dedication, even his closest friends and allies were not entirely devoid of doubt. Hawthorne continued his work to rout the enemies of the Imperium, but it didn't take long for his methods to become much more liberal. Without the resources he once had within the Imperium, he began to look outside it. Dealings with xenos, mutants, and even heretics were not beyond him at this point, so long as it assisted him in completing his goals. Some who have had to work with him have come to question his allegiances entirely.
Magus Hawthorne walks a very thin line between hero and heretic. It won't be long before he has to show his true colours...
After being horribly wounded in battle, the remaining parts of his body were mounted in a floating mechanical frame. The frame provides all the life-support functions necessary for his survival. Additionally, the frame is mounted with a focus that channels his already powerful abilities as a psyker. The frame is mounted with a single mechanical manipulator arm, a search light, and a plasma cannon with variable power settings (it can be used as either a powerful burst shot, a medium-strength sustained shot, or a low power close range burst of energy to deter close-range assailants).

Ah yes...the infamous "Fishbowl Head".
I am one of said Fafnir's friends. Super stoked for this thing to get underway (we've been trying to start it since November if not sooner!).
I'll be playing Space Pirates. Oh yes, Pirates. In Space. I'll have an Eldar captain with his Eldar cronies, as well as human lackies and deckhands (cannon-fodder, so to speak). I'll basically be running around causing mayhem and getting into all sorts of shenanigans who knows? Maybe my role in this narrative will become much more sinister.
Anyways, don't have any pics yet unfortunately. Still gotta finish up basing my models (thanks to Fafnir for coaching and materials).

Just found this because i was intrigued by your Avatar Fafnir. Really like this dude, interesting fluff also. Infact i gotta ask how did you do the build? it looks sweet. Seeing as this is an I-munda blog i am shocked at the lack of gratuitous Green/Styrene/bitz porn lol
Thinking about it, it reminds me of the doctor dude from 'Rage'.
Now before you read on Bear in mind i only critique posters who i think are great modellers/painters.
I find the paintjob lacking tbh. The black/grey is quite flat and tbh, artiscally speaking, i dont see what the mud splash does for the piece; i would assume he is hovering above it....... The colour is great on the flesh but the grainy-ness is somewhat distracting, difficulties with primer? In general there is a lack of highlighting/colour depth/blending/whatever fancy method.

I appreciate the criticism. Some of the points you're taking issue with are just from the fact that my phone isn't the best piece of technology for photography in the world. The black/grey of the armour is airbrushed on, and the gradiation didn't pick up as well on my phone as I would have liked. However, I have noticed that the contrast could definitely be increased. I'm still in the experimental stage with my airbrush (well... will still be, once I clean the damn thing), so learning how to shade properly will come with time.
As for the face, I've always had issues with white paint (seriously, no clue as to why, it always buggers up for me), but they're not as pronounced as they are in the photo. I tried to remedy the graininess by painting him so that he would look more sickly, however, it still shows in some lighting.
I'm not sure if he should get a wash on the black/grey bits. It would certainly bring out more of the shading, but I'm not sure if it would be too much.
Really, the model was so unique that I didn't really have much of an idea of how I was going to paint him going in. He's really a testbed for airbrush techniques, non metallic metal (on the skull on the crest, and some detail on the backside not shown), dirt/mud effects, and working on skin tones.
Ultimately, I wanted a kind of Tim-Burton kind of look going on (whatever that means ), and wanted a really minimalist kind of character that still had a lot of personality.
What I think he needs most though, is a scenic base to fit with all the dirt and mud on him.
As for the parts actually used in the model... oh boy.
First off, the main head compartment is made by using the jump pack of a Sanguinary Gaurd. The face was cut off from a Furioso Librarian, and then green stuff was applied to round off the chin where it was cut off. The face was then glued to the area of the jump pack where a turbine would usually be. After that, I took the dreadnought psychic hood and placed that upside down as a chin guard, with dread fingers being used as braces on the side. Finally, a piece of dreadnought extra armour was placed above the head as a crest.
The body is made using the searchlight from an Imperial Guard tank, with a magna grapple in the middle to act as the cannon. Dreadnought extra armour pieces are put on the side to act as the 'pectorals.' You can't really see it in the picture, but the head is connected to the body with some Forgeworld pistons and a few other miscellaneous pieces. The manipulator arm comes from a Forgeworld servitor.
Also, there will be some greenstuff/bitz porn in the future... Hopefully near future. Working on a really badass eviscerator right now, among other things.

I love this model, the paintjob really suits the unfussiness of the build. I think the mud looks slightly out of place atm but once you've done an appropriately scenic base I'm sure it'll tie together nicely.
I'm a big fan overall of your painting style, it's very gritty, perfect for 40k! Looking forward to seeing more.

I like it.... odd and cool. I''m very impressed by the actual build...interesting choices and a very nice finished model. I rather like the colour and the mud splatter. I think the purity seals could do with another highlight and tiny text. I'm rather fond of the fuzzy head, it makes it look like it is made of some strange material.
Any idea what the rest of the warband are going to be looking like?
Interesting stuff going on here. Looking forward to seeing what the other participants post and some battle reports.

I've been incredibly busy with school and some personal issues recently, not to mention actually rewriting the entire ruleset for Inquisimunda, and have had great difficulty finding time to get things done, but I'll try to post some more bread crumbs as soon as I can. Maybe by tomorrow, when I can get some sunlight for some good photos.

Here are a few WIPs of his retinue. In various stages of completion.
First off, my druggie. Pretty much an eversor assassin. His head and torso are from the Chaos Renegades by Forgeworld, his legs are from Space Marine Scouts, his right arm is from an Anima Tactics zombie, his left arm (not shown, removed to make painting easier) is an Imperial Gaurd mechanical arm with a powersword, and his injector rig was made using a dreadnaught stormbolter ammo feed, some tank hook things (not sure, just took them from a friend's bitz collection), and the jets off of a space marine's backpack. He's been the source of much rage in our test games, where he's been loaded up with drugs and thrown straight at whatever moves, usually leaving a trail of dead models in his wake.
He also enjoys long walks on the beach and watching the sunset together.
Here's the sage, built using the Chaos sorcerer plastic kit. We've come to call him "Space Pimp" because of his appearance, although I lost his head and need to find a new one, not sure what for that yet.
And lastly, the first acolyte. Used a Dark Eldar Lhamean. Shaved the ears down to look more human, cut off the collar (which was a finecast fail so I had to get rid of it anyway), removed the topknot and replaced it with a clip (you can't see it in the picture) made from greenstuff, gave her a mechanical arm from a FW servitor, shaved down her breasts a bit and placed an imperial eagle on top to make it look like a plate of armour, and built the large shoulder guard using several purity seals and cadian shoulder pads. It's supposed to function as a combat shield.

The enforcer conversion is looking cool so far. Quick questions....1.did the scout legs fit nicely? 2. What are the shoulder pads made from (is it the storm bolter ammo feed)?

We started out with the rules from Empire of Ghosts, and some of the stuff we've kept - mostly the rules/points for each faction. Fafnir has done a fantastic job of re-doing abilities, skills, psychic powers, shooting and melee weapons (and probably some other stuff I'm forgetting). I think Fafnir's only changed a few of the core rules, and all of the changes are designed to make the campaign more balanced as we enter late-game scenarios.
For campaigns, I think we're just going to be using stuff right from the Necromunda book, because hey - it's already there for us!
Linky for Empire of Ghosts - http://empireofghosts.blogspot.com/p/inquisimunda-resources.html
Also, Fafnir is really pressuring me to put up pictures of my Space Pirates, so those may be up at some point in the future...yo ho ho etc. etc.

Okay, so I've FINALLY taken some pictures of my Space Pirates.
I must warn you all, the paint jobs are incredibly mediocre and the conversions are light if any. Also, my phone's camera is crap, so unfortunately lots of the pictures didn't turn out too well...

As Sneak alluded to above, we're using the Empire of Ghosts ruleset (linked above) as a starting point, which itself is based on Necromunda, but I've personally rewritten and rebalanced a lot of the rules. I've reworked close combat to fit a 4 player game (we intend on having up to 4 players at a time), reworked overwatch completely, rebuilt the entirety of psychic powers by scratch, as well as the skill system (you can now only equip up to 3 skills at a time, but now skills are built towards customizing your characters to fit a specific role, as opposed to simply being bonus abilities), and created stat caps for every race, as opposed to stat caps based on warband.
There's still a lot of tweaking left to do, and I find myself with less and less time to do it, but we're finally at a stage where the game is actually playable, and look forward to having our first few games soon, even if it might be kind of messy, it'll definitely be fun. I'll probably end up posting the ruleset for other people to look at/use at some point.

Sounds like a lot of work, but it also sounds like it's worth it. I am (for one) quite interested to see what you've done with the ruleset. I like the idea of a statcap for each individual race, which seems to make much more sense to me, as does the skill dedication. I'm quite curious to see what you've done with the psychic powers.
Best of luck to you!

Messy and fun is surely the whole point!!
I'd definitely be interested in seeing what you've done with the rules. While I like most of the EoG ruleset the psychic powers seem off (way too many, and some minor powers more useful than major powers) and race stat caps make much more sense imho.
Are you keeping the requesting help/summoning rules? I'd argue these are one of the biggest problems if you're trying to achieve some kind of balance, with some factions having the chance of 3(!) marines turning up in a scenario and other factions having nothing. I like the fluffyness of it, I just feel the whole thing needs tweeking.
Anyway, good to see your models TheSneak, get Fafner to take some pics so we can see them in all their glory! And it'd be nice to see some of the other bands in your gaming group if you can persuade them to break out their cameras.

Well, the summoning/request rules only apply to my warband so far (everyone else seems to be pirates or a strike force), and I won't be using those anyway for that reason.
As for psychic powers, minor and major powers are gone. There are 5 general powers that anyone can take (I'd like to make it 10 though), and then various factions/races can pick from a list of 5 more powers (for example, there are 5 Inquisitional powers and 5 Eldar powers). Faction specific powers are not inherently better than general powers, they just cater to a specific playstyle. For example, Eldar powers are more support based, while Inquisitional powers are more powerful, but have very dangerous risks associated with them.
Additionally, Ork psychic powers are completely different from everyone else, and Orkz can only use Ork Psychic Powers. Where as most psykers use powers similarly to how you would in 5th edition, Orkz psykers have to build up Waaagh! energy to spend on powers. They gain a point every turn for every Ork within 2" (including themselves), up to 5 a turn, and can store up to 10 Waaagh! energy total. If an Ork psyker has any Waaagh! energy on him at the end of his turn though, he can overload and blow himself or the Orkz around him up.
Once they build up enough Waaagh! energy, Orkz can then spend it on Ork Psychic powers, and they know every power from the Ork psychic power list automatically.
Although their powers aren't completed yet, they are easily the most fun to write. A power that costs 10 Waaagh! energy can end up hurting every model on the table (friend or foe!). And yes, there is a power to turn enemies into Squigs.
