Your army is called The Rout or, more formally, The Vlka Fenryka. The Fang is The Aett. The Canis Helix gives you yellow eyes. After reading Prospero Burns and Battle for the Fang, gone are the days of Billy Kings sophomoric vision of soda pop wolves running around in cartoon land. I'm not saying I would dissuade a wolf player from reading the Ragnar books, but they dont compare to Abnett and Wraight, IMO.

The Ragnar books are useful to see the SW's organisation and other things...
The other two are good IMO but frankly some bits of it are a bit... off... IMO.

O_o I found the newer stuff to be significantly worse than the old stuff (which never much jived with me in the first place).

Especially all the sillyness of "red snow" and "muder-make" and whatnot...repeated over and over and over again.

Throwing out viking sounding words and phrases just for it's own sake and further compounding the condtradictory nature of the SW's didn't help them look any better.

"we're dark and mysterious executioners who fight super intelligently but in a way made to fool out enemies to think we're just crazy berzerkers just for kicks and somehow have an amazing intelligence and spy network despite being a rather blunt and straightforward fighting force and fight in the name of a secular figurehead but feel the need to be mystical about everything and leave religious runes on battlefields as warding symbols"

ugh...

Not sure where you're going with this... Has the SW back story changed? Yeah... But we're talking different time periods. (Heresy and M32 respectively)

William King's SW stories are basically where the 40k wolves are at. The Rout hasn't existed for 8 to 10k years and only Bjorn (and potentially 13th company) still remembers them.

Battle for the Fang is post heresy. I don't recall the wolves ever having some "giant organization of spies", in fact, I believe them being so blunt that they took in a spy, showed him pretty much everything that went on, then froze him and stuck him with the dreadnoughts. I don't know about the Ragnar books though, I just felt they were heavily cliched at times, especially with dialogue. I also felt like those elaborate plans by the Thousand Sons and even by the Vlka Fenryka to combat them were almost silly. I'm having a hard time putting it into words, but something felt off when reading them. IMO most of the plans carried out would have never made it past the idea stage, much less actually work if coming to fruition. Did I mention Sven said bloody entirely too many times, to the extent to me having to mentally block out the word. What author would really want to put his reader through that mental strife?

Battle for the Fang isn't in the 41st Milenium either...
They could easily have a large organisation of informants and contacts throughout the Imperium and they'd be just the legion/chapter to do it.
No one would ever suspect...

They had a rather widespread intelligence gathering capability and organization in the HH books particularly through their vassals/serfs.

True, and they definitely had their issues, but the same can be said of just about everything in 40k, though yeah, there was a lot of odd stuff (like guardsmen with rhinos and predators).

Nowhere near as bad as the force-fed "viking" terminology in Prospero burns, annoying yes, but the silly pseudo-viking words hamfisted in at every opportunity in PB was just awful. In the same way where Fantasy books insist on using non-standard terminology for relatively common things tend to read really poorly.

this greatly applies to PB with regards to all the viking pseudo-babble

Yeah, someone just read HH and knows how everything works now.

We should make this into 'What's your SW Company called?' thread

Old joke is unfunny.
Also more true of the Blood Angels, as a lot of the 'wolf' names were there before Kelly got hold of the 'dex.

I know, but for me it's somehow come back around to being funny again, the way repetitive humour sometimes can.

for the sake of sticking vaguely to the topic, I thought Bill King's Space Wolf books were reasonably good reads back in their day. He's a very competent pulp writer, as the early Felix and Gotrek stuff attests, but his quality seems to have sunk proportionately as the detail of GW's universe has increased.

Dan Abnett and William King are my favorite writers of GW fiction. So far neither author has written a book I didn't like.

And my SW army is Aegis Drakesbane's cohort, part of Jorin Bloodfang's 13th Great Company, from during the Eye of Terror campaign.

He and his brethren have skipped everything goofy between the days after the Horus Heresy and the 41M by chasing traitors into the Eye of Terror, and as such are still under the orders given by Leman Russ himself.

Plus, this fact lets them 'technically' be a pre-heresy army at the same time, because like Chaos foes, many of them are Marines from the Heresy because of the Eye's time-goofyness.

Ah, the 'Family Guy' principle at work, then.

They weren't terrible, really. A bit pulp-y, but let's be fair, so is a great chunk of the rest of the BL stuff. They were at least enjoyable, and that's no bad thing.

Pyramid! Fjalnir whatever crazy fanfic name ironist is a what? A company. Not a chapter. That being said, I didn't mean to stir up the pot so hardcore, rather express my enthusiasm for having my army depicted in a way that I felt suited them far better. I didn't really mind the Viking terminology or notice it too much actually, however I'm not TOO familiar with Vikings anyways aside from a casual viewing of the 13 th warrior a few years ago. Regardless, to all the fans, I'm sorry for hating on King but I felt obligated to read his books, so then I was casual reading something I found unbearable, which reminds me of school. REGARDLESS, relax, Jesus.
