I am new player to 40k. I have black reach and have tried the space marines and I really think the chaos space marines look beast. I was just wondering if they are good or should i try another army. I prefer the more elite armies that are slow and hard to kill. Thanks for any input

Go for the Chaos Marines for sure! Obliterators, Terminators, and Defilers all fit the bill. The most important thing is that you like how the army looks!

Did you ever wonder what a creature like that must be like? A whole existence spent praising your God, but always with one wing dipped in blood. Would you ever really want to see an angel?"

Yeah that's one thing I'm enjoying about 40k is that you don't have to play the army everyone else does to actually win lol.

I just ran (about an hour ago) 1000 point Chaos Marine army, and kicked Ork ass. We both had a blast while playing. :ast time we played, it was 2500 points, and we had a blast while playing that, and it came down to the wire (mostly because I placed all my objectives on his side of the table, and that cost me the game.)

Chaos is great fun.

You say you like elite hard to kill units.

So off the top of my head anything nurgle. It gives your models +1 toughness. T5 terminators for example or T6 bikers. They also have the best troop choice in that codex. Plague marines are T5 marines with feel no pain making them extra hard to kill.

There are also obliterators that you can field, 2+ armor save slow and purposeful multi wound heavy weapons platforms should fit your playstyle. I also like the nurgle daemon prince. Even with the nerf to warptime (such a lame move) the fact he is an even harder to kill monstrous creature is cool.

When in doubt burn it, then burn yourself for doubting.

If i where to ever start a Chaos Space Marine army, it'd be a Thousand Son themed one for the lolAP3 Bolters, or a Khorne one.

Also, if you want to spend less money, you can use the models you got from the Black Reach box as Chaos, just throw some spikey bits on them when you are repainting them your chosen legions colours. Maybe throw a few Xs on Imperial insignia, or 8ptd stars.

Renegade Space Marines, hoooo!

I was going to suggest the same. A lot of people do not like Thousand Sons, but I wasp laying them years ago and try to stick with them. Having Marine killer ammo, and and being able to take a save from, well anything, is great. (A Rhino becomes your freind) And Plague Marines are a tough sort as well.

It depends on which ones you like the look of. Have a look at the GW website for the different looks for the Chaos powers (Khorne, Slaanesh, Tzeench and Nurgle) but as a good base I'd suggest some Chaos Marine squads, a character to lead them, and a vehicle of some sort. Maybe a Predator or a Landraider?

Chaos is a fine codex. It can hold up well against anything out there, but like everyone else, can't melee grey knights. That's why you take obliterators/defilers/possessed vindicators.

The majority of my CSM are black reach stuffs. 3 black reach dreads slightly converted to chaos, same with 5 termies and 6 termies that went to become obliterators.

Rumor has it they're soon to be updated. I have no clue what they'll be doing with the models or anything.

That being said, CSM is easily my favorite army out of all of 40k. So if you wanna try it, you should, but be aware changes may come soon.

So, CSM is a "force concentration" army, and like other similar armies (like grey knights, for example), they work by taking few models that are both really good, and rather expensive, and shoving them down your opponent's throat as hard as you can. If this is what you're looking for (which it sounds like you are), then CSM can work for you.

Plus, as mentioned, they're slated for a codex update soon, which means buy your models now before they get more expensive.

You can do CSM in a lot of ways, but the best place to start is with your troops. CSM troops choices are fantastic, and there's a LOT you can do with them. Look to be spending at least half your points from this slot.

As for which units to take, as others have said, that depends on what you're looking for. I hold out extra appreciation for CSM players that devote their army to just one god (and I secretly believe that this is how you make the strongest CSM lists), but you don't have to, of course.

Green stuff and/or bits from other chaos sprues. If it has spikes, it's chaos.

Well technically you don't. Chaos Dreads and Dreads have the same basic profile and everything.

You can pretty much do whatever you want to that dreadnought. Spiky bits, chaos emblems, new insignias, or even just a chaos-esque paintjob.

right now I'm building some Blood Angels, but down the line I plan on making an Alpha Legion force. The way I look at the fluff, even though Alpha Legion sided with Horus, there's no real evidence that they have fallen to Chaos. So my plan is to use mostly stock SM models when I make that army.

...urrrr... I dunno

Yo dawg, I heard you liked Chaos.

With the kitbashing from AOBR, I would say that you'll need to tweak a fair bit, as the SM there are modelled as Ultramarines.
As a Chaos player, you do not want to look like an Ultramarine.
It might be better, in the long term, to get the battleforce, as by the sounds of it you're not too experienced a modeller (correct me if I'm wrong, by all means) and it might be more hassle than it's worth to get rid of all those damn U's from the shoulder pads.

Go for chaos, they aren't terribly competitive but with a bit of work you can do well 8/10 times. Besides, they are rumored to have a new codex some time soon. Personally, im holding out till the codex release
