Hi guys,
so after 2 months of deliberations, Ive finally decided my first army - the Necrons !!!!!!

Im planning to Order the Battleforce but Im not sure what to get for some melee - Im thinking 1 box of Lychguard should be suffiecent for starters.

That way Im thinking --> 2x10 warrios, 5 scarabs, 5x Lychguard with Overlord, 5 Immortals, 1x Dooms Ark/Ghost Ark.
Speaking of which ... should I build the ghost ark or Doom Ark from my Battleforce ?

Get 'em boyz!

You are probably better off with the Ghost Ark.

The Barges are also a great buy. Both the Annihilation, and Catacomb command barge are great in game, and you get a plastic Overlord.

If I was just starting out, I would buy two battle forces. You can use extra warriors to convert into crypteks. Between the Lychguard box, and the Battleforces, you'll have a lot of bits to convert.

Not horrible. I don't know how the Lychguard perform, so I can't say much on them, but the rest aren't too bad (Scarab Entropic is nice as hell). As for Doom v. Ghost, you can pretty much magnetize it easily enough to switch to whatever you need for a game without many problems.

As you ate starting out you need to decide on what type of army you want. If you want lots of warriors build a doom ark and use the GA passengers as Warriors.

If you want a mechanised list, build a ghost ark to save FOC slots.

Battle force is a great buy, get one, maybe 2 if you can. It's amazing. Aftert that I recommend getting a Catacomb Command barge for the free HQ and dual purpose set that it is. If you really want CC, lychguard with sword and board are good, but I've personally had better resualts with a steady stream of wraiths, though the new models are not out. If you want some more troops though, go immortals. Highly worth it

Well Im on a tight budget. Im a poor student and I've been literally watching youtube videos on warhammer 40k battle reports and reading codices every night and dreaming about warhammer 40k for over 2 months now. It is quite an expensive purchase for me, but it looks like a nice hobby and since Im very busy with my school (finishing my masters in international law), I decided I can reward myself . What Im trying to say is, Im trying to buy an all around army that I could play with for a while without making any purchases for a while.

Like I said, man, learn to magnetize things. Saves BOATLOADS, and is also great as you learn what you should and should not put on your guys, assuming you already have some modelling stuff.

Somewhere over the rainbow, way up high

Lychguard are good as either a counter-assault melee screen, or paired with a deep-striking veiltek to get them right into melee. They're tough, but slow, sorta like necron terminators (also similar in points cost)

If you are looking for a generally aggressive unit, The Canoptek Wraiths are by consensus the most powerful melee unit the Necrons have at their disposal, with a 3+ invul save, fast movement, and multiple wounds...they just cant back up

Ok I've made my first army list, which should be doable with my current palnt o get a Battleforce, Overlord and a Box of Lychguards. I decided to make the Doomsday Ark in the end, since I dont rly have anything to transport around.

HQ: Necron Overlord - 90
- Wascythe – 10
- Sempiternal Weave- 15
- Res. Orb – 30
145

10x Necron Warriors – 120
10x Necron Warriors – 120
5x Lychguard - 200
5x Immortals – 85
5x Scarabs - 75
1x Doomsday Ark – 175
-----------------------------------
920

So maybe if I add a little equipment or perhaps couple more units/ proxies, Ill be ready for a 1000pt battle

What you think ? Generally playable ?

Probably time for the army-list forum

Anyhow. I'd think about the following...

1) Lychguard likely need shields if you are largely footsloggin. They'll be your mobile cover to screen Immortals or whatever as you advance. Without them, massed heavy weapons will decimate you quickly.

2) Drop Sem. Weave for Mindshackle Scarabs. They are nearly always worth it if you find your Lord into melee.

3) Not sure where you wanna stick your lord. You'll get the most bang for his Orb from 10 Immortals probably. Phaeron is good to lay down some screening fire as you advance with either Immortals or Warriors in a Footcron army

4) For a small 1000 pt game, consider perhaps 2x 3xScarabs instead of 1x5

Not sure how you'd squeeze points (other than going Ghost Arc instead of Doomsday after all), but I think some of the above might be worth considering.

[edit]
oh.. points left. So see if it works.

Haha wait what.
Annihilation Barge comes with a Necron Overlord? Can he be put on a base or does it require some conversion work?

Regarding Tau, If I may recommend tactics to you...

Use magnest or bluetack and don't glue him to the barge or Base. Then you can put him on or off his Barge when you need.

If you build it as an A-barge, just glue him to the base.
