Would a thin coat of gloss varnish work?

Yes, any type of varnish would work.

Better try to get hold on some Matte varnish, because you don't want to have all your decals shine glossy.

You can use hairspray to affix it to the model, and it shouldn't fog up varnish. It'll also dull the transfer.

For best results, GLOSS varnish UNDER the decal and then OVER it to lock it down. Decals don't like to stick to a matt surface, and tend to "silver" at the edges if you do.

Finish with matte varnish to de-shine and blend it in.

This is the way it has been done for decades.
