Didn't see any thread on here yet about this so here we go.
2000AD is now 35 years old. They've released a special free issue that compiles the first strip of some of their most popular characters.

Personally Dredd and Nikolai Dante are my favourite 2000AD characters.

Dredd and Rogue Trooper got me into 2000AD.
Shame we can't get the "free" issue here (local comic store only gets it in on order, and you have to do a 3 month order minimum).
After flicking through a recent ish, it's either not what it was - or I've just moved on from comics.

I'm OVER 50 (and so far over everyone's BS, too).
Old enough to know better, young enough to not give a ****.
That is not dead which can eternal lie ...
... and yet, with strange aeons, even death may die.

Amazing comic, loved it for years and years.
The ABC Warriors/Nemesis the Warlock crossover Black Hole series remains my favorite thing they ever did.

I always have had a soft spot for dredd. Especially after reading the 'A Mega-City Primer' I do love that opening song they sing;
"Woke up this morning feeling thirty kinds of mean, Helmet on my head belly full of spleen, Judges don't get no soft beds and pillows just ten mins in the sleep machine"
PS Simon Bisley is also my fav Dredd artist. =o]

Wow, I can't believe it's that old! I still have the second issue (the first one to feature Dredd) wrapped up in a plastic sleeve somewhere.
Always thought the comic had such a wonderful sense of humour, and you can definitely see its influence on the early days of 40k and some of its writers (indeed, I think Dan Abnett has written for the comic on occasion). It didn't try to wrap things in cotton wool for kids, and sometimes used to introduce some quite adult concepts and satire of what was happening in the world at the time. At the same time I think that was what made it so popular with kids, yet also still readably by adults.
Favourite characters? Hmm that's a hard one, probably easier to write down the ones I didn't like! Of course Slaine was wonderful, also Strontonium Dog, and the ABC warriors. And Dredd, some of the long multi-issue stories were amazing.
