Hello all,
I just played my first ever
WHFB contest and had a great time. I was able to win; I think this was mostly due to my magic phase. Anyhow, here is the report.
We played battle for the pass and he went first.
Dwarf list:
I am truly uncertain what he had but I will give it my best shot.
2 Dwarf Lords
2 other Dwarf heroes of some type
2x units of 25 dwarfs w/ dual weapons
2x units of 30 Dwarfs w/ great weapons and heavy armor
2x units of 30 Dwarfs w/ shields and weapons that auto wound on 4+
All of his units were immune to fear, terror, and panic. All of his units were stubborn.
My
WoC list:
Lvl 4 Sorc of TZ on manticore
Exalted Hero on juggernaut w/
BSB (magic banner was extra +1 combat res)
Festus the Leechlord
Scyla Anfinngrim
54 marauders w/ fc,
gw, mon (Festus here)
25 chaos warriors w/ fc, shields, mon (
BSB here) banner = Banner of Rage
15 chosen w/ fc, shields,
mot (champion had Favour of the Gods) banner = Blasted Standard
The chosen received a gift of the gods which increased their armor save to 2+.
Hellcannon
The contest:
He advanced towards me with the apparent intention of combo charging my warriors and chosen with 2 - 3 of his units.
My block of marauders got caught behind a forest and really didn't affect the battle. My Hellcannon scattered 10 inches three consecutive turns, killing a total of 5 models over 3 turns - not very impressive.
Scyla killed his general in single combat. The Dwarf Lord had a weapon that made each of his wounds
d6 and caused 8 wounds. Scyla saved 5, so he only took 3 wounds. When he fought back he got very, very lucky and killed the Dwarf. The following turn there was nobody for Scyla to challenge and the Dwarfs wiped him out.
I had two spells which I was able to get off almost every turn. Sorc kept casting Treason of TZ so that when those blocks of 30 Dwarfs with
GW made it to combat they only had about 12 models (having lost 18 models over two turns). Festus kept casting Curse of the Leper upon whichever unit was fighting my warriors. This made this Dwarfs minus one to both
St and To in addition to the -1
WS due to
MoN. These spells allowed my warriors over 6 turns to wipe out 2 squads of 30 Dwarfs each. The infernal puppet saved my caster twice!
My chosen had to slog their way through 3 squads of opponents (fortunately due to terrain and Scyla slowing a unit down each of the Dwarf units made contact with my chosen on three different turns: 2, 3, and 5.) The chosen killed one squad of 25 Dwarfs over the course of the contest.
Every challenge I made resulted in my characters winning the combat and gaining further glory in the eyes of the gods.
On turn 6, my sorc on manticore cast Treason, used the single-use flame weapon, charged the 25 man strong dwarf unit and watched the manticore stomp his way to forcing the unit to flee. The manticore chased 'em down and wiped 'em out.
At the end of turn 6 he got points for killing Scyla = 105. I killed four of his units entirely and both of his Dwarf Lords for a decisive victory in my first ever
WHFB.
I was surprised his army was basically an all infantry army to face my all infantry army. I believe this created a substantial advantage for the
WoC. Although Scyla surely got lucky in winning his combat I was quite amazed by how effective the magic phase was for
WoC. I understand that Dwarfs are basically only defensive in the magic phase, but I still didn't think magic would be as effective as it was. This was a real lesson for me!
I did like the combination of mon and banner of rage on my 25 chaos warriors. But Festus' Curse of the Leper made the dwarf units into little children playing with hammers. Again, a real eye opener for me.
My next opponent will be Orcs & Goblins. What should I be on the look out for?
Final question: I used my marauders in a 10 wide block with 5 1/2 ranks. Would they work better 6 wide and 9 deep? They would at least be easier to maneuver.
