Im just wondering how viable it is to play the Manurus Calgar w/ his Honor Guard. I think it would be pretty cool to have my chapter master on the board, but the question is how good is he really? I play with a buddy of mine and he runs around with Karn the Betrayer and a squad of khorn beserkers who piss in my cheerios everytime we play. That and his deamon prince. Normally I just use a pretty general Company Commander for my Ultrasmurfs and instead of using the points for a chaplin or another HQ choice I just use those points for urgrades / another tac squad. But im kind of Jealous that I dont have a cool HQ choice to make my army just that much more fun to play. I like Manurus Calgar, just wanted to get the dakkadakka feedback on how to use him effectively on the board, and how good that unit really is.

Calgar is pretty amazing. Honor Guard is fairly pricy though. I prefer to just get the big guy.

You need to adapt the army though to get the most milage out of him. He works (just roughly) better with an infantry-heavy, partly deepstriking list than with, say, a mechanized or gun-line.

But against things like a CSM Khorne list, mastering his super-combat-tactics can really allow you to frustrate your opponents.

Far too expensive for all but the largest armies and honourguard aren't that hot.
If you have trouble with Kharn then try out your assault termies. The Betrayer, for all his might, realy hates thunderhammers.

I hear he is pretty good at pimp slapping Eldar Avatars.

He's super pricey and hes no mephiston but in the times that I have fielded him, there have been no defeats. Mastery of his combat tactics is really quite useful, and makes tac marines way more viable, as retreating from a melee then rapid firing into it can be done easily.

Marneus is really hard to kill, and can roflstomp MCs and should put a hurting on kharn and a couple zerkers.

friend of mine plays ultrasmurfs, and uses calgar attached to a group of assault termies. they usually camp out in a LR and make extensive use of calgars ability to auto pass/fail any morale/LD checks. they are also pretty kick butt in CC, and can take a decent amount of incoming fire. hes expensive, but as SC go, hes not horrible.
