Nice report. I also really like the DOW style Necron scenery that you had in the centre of the board.

Heh. It wouldn't have been so bad if my opponent would have failed a save every once in a while.

I should have played a bit more conservatively, I suppose, until they had been dealt with but I genuinely thought the shooting from 10 Immortals, 20 Warriors, 5 Destroyers, 2 Annihilation barges and a smattering of Crypteks over a few turns, combined with a Hail Mary assault from a full squad with Furious Charge all those characters, combined with another squad that had Mindshackle Scarabs would have been able to do the trick.

Apparently I was wrong.

They have some quality terrain at Thou Shalt Game, no doubt.

Damn, I'm stunned those Thunderwolves managed to take a whole army's worth of shooting, plus two assaults. Almost doesn't seem fair.

Watching this made me sad! My steely necron heart cracks a little.

The destroyer mix up was a bit of a problem, and some other little hiccups, but that was still a really rough go of it.

Do you have any adjustments you'd make to your take all comers list with this in mind? Was there anything you feel like you've taken away from the game?

Even if I hadn't forgotten to shoot the Destroyers, I'm not convinced that they would have done sufficient damage in that turn to have made much of a difference.

A couple things I would have done differently:

I should have been more cautious with the Wraiths. If I'd kept them in threatening range of the objectives on my opponent's side of the table and away from the Wolf Lords for a couple of turns I could have maybe had another turn of shooting at the Wolves, since they wouldn't have gotten a 5 inch consolidation off when they killed the Wraiths.

I wished I had been growing a beastly swarm of Scarabs to give Furious Charge with Zahndrekh and throw into the Wolf Lords to hopefully bite the armor off of them before they got too close. For the points of the Destroyers I could comfortably fit in 3 Spyders and a scarab swarm, so I think I've officially given up on the Destroyers for now.

Finally, I really just can't wait for the Night Scythe to be released. The more Tesla Destructors the better!

I guess pods aren't what you want heavy gauss cannons against. I'd still figure the destroyers could have been put to good use working on some of those backfield squads, though your idea about the wraiths seemed like a good one. Destroyers just seem much better when they are moving around and well away from the target.

I guess necrons, no matter the anti personnel fire they can muster, cannot hole up and try to take the charge from a deathstar unit. Actually, that doesn't sound right. The mind shackles and the counter charge units usually work for me. But those wolves seemed so inevitable. I guess it's a matter of staggering them?

It's entirely possible that I'm being overly harsh on the Destroyers. I did forget to shoot them on that one turn, and another wound or two on that wolf squad would have made a pretty big difference.

I'm not sure what else I could have done. I thought the right thing to do would be position myself so that I could make sure I get to unload practically my whole army onto the TWC before they got a chance to charge. If I hadn't stayed together until that point I would have been picked apart, piece by piece.

I'm open to suggestions as to what you'd have done differently.

The splitting up idea is the same concept I use against battle wagons. Send the wraiths and destroyers on a flank to threaten his scoring units (which he wont have too many thanks to fielding 800 points of hq) and it will force him to either split up his cavalry (greatly reducing their effectiveness), waste time chasing the wraiths/destroyers, or slog across the board towards your scoring units. you did this to some extent and the dice just didn't help but having more cheap warrior squads with a veil in them might help to warp away from the cavalry once they get to you.

Watching the game in person, it really came down to saves.
Dawson was making all of his 2+ and most of his 3++, there is very little Monster Rain could have done differently....

That's why I've been paying so much attention to the destroyers. They seem to be a reasonable unit to demech and kite marine options. At the cost of a land raider I'm really skeptical of them, but how many other units do what they do? Such a weird unit.

But I have to agree with you guys here. I'm hearing really valid points. Necrons are not to be trusted yet it seems. Lots left to figure out.
