This is a quick, hopefully simple, question. What's the best way to base a Revenant titan? What kind of material is good to use, and recommendations for the general build (of the base or titan, I'm not picky).

It's not going to be a scenic work of art. I want it to be functional on the tabletop, and to not fall over easily.

6th Ed Eldar - 4/2/5

"The warhost on the hill was one of the most bizzare sights I had ever seen on a battlefield... Xenos, daemons and humans collected together in units together, gripping dice and paintbrushes; Orks, humans and creatures for which I had no name, clad in ancient armour and clothing; steam-powered walkers with antique-armoured assistants; and many bizarre war-machines, many of which had no purpose that I understood.
An Eldar, bizarrely dressed in a customised suit of power armour and standing on a shield borne by two servants, was carried forth out of the crowd. Raising his Daemon weapon, he shouted three abrupt words:
"Thin! YOUR! PAINTS!"
With that, every member of the warhost screamed out their own battlecry; only a few that I heard were "WOLVES FOR THE WOLF GOD, WOLVES FOR THE WOLF THRONE!", "METAL BAWKSES!", and, strangest of all, "CREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEED!". However, after a few seconds, all these shouts were replaced with a single, simultaneous battlecry:
"DAKKA DAKKA DAKKA! 'ERE WE GO, 'ERE WE GO, 'ERE WE GO!" Upon shouting this, the entire army charged down the hill, guns blazing." - extract from the report of Colonel Montague, Cadian 12th, on the "Gugalle Incident".

My recommendation is to NOT base it. I know most people like to for the modeling aspect and I agree with that. However, if you plan to play with it, you won't be able to take advantage of terrain the same as if it was not based. With a base, you can't stick one foot in a ruined building to take advantage of that ever important cover.

Just my opinion. Most will disagree, I think.

Interesting. That honestly didn't cross my mind. If I can find someway to make it stand up in a stable manner without a base, I may go that route.

Thanks for the food for thought.

if you want to make it stand without a base, you will need to hollow out the feet as much as you can, and pack them with lead. it's pretty much the only way to weight it enough

Ok. So, what kind of base would be suitable for gaming then?

Vehicles need to be 50% obscured anyway...

really big ruined buildings?

Why not add two smaller bases on on each foot? that would still allow you to place it stradling buildings and other scenery otherwise you'll have to keep moving anything that has fallen between his feet like small buildings, troops, vehicles and such

Well, I suppose I was assuming that it was going to be used in Apoc games. I made 5, 6, and 7 story buildings for Apoc in my FLGS. So, obscuring war engines and titans is a non-issue. Your idea for basing each foot is sound. I did that with my card stock Warhound. I traced the basic shape of the foot a little wider on mdf board and cut it out. Works like a charm. I have the old Armorcast Eldar titans and they stand up great. They have great balance, so I don't need bases with them.

This. I like how you think.

It's come down to two options: the above suggestion, and the Titan standing on a ruined Leman Russ.

Thanks for the suggestions guys.

I know that the FW guys use Ikea circular wooden bread boards as the bases for a lot of their titans...

I've built two of these for other folks and both were attached to bases. I went to nearby craft store and bought round MDF bases or plinths. They were around 5 inches in diameter. That made them big enough to support and model like this with the arms/guns that stick out and not so big as to make the model unwieldy. On one of the models, the titan is landing on one foot only with the other up in the air so it needed to have a nice, solid base for support.

The big thing with basing it to make sure you have your model joints pinned properly and then taking the time to attach the model to the base securely. You don't want the base to be extra weight on an already fragile model. It's a bit of work, but well worth it in the end if you ask me.

Adding a little bit of a theme, ruined base, rubble, trees, etc can make the model look all the better too. And it helps hide the connection to the base in some cases.

Here's the link to my Eldar titan project with a bunch of posts that might help you out.

If you have access to a Laser Cutter for plexiglas, that is a great and precise option for making a base. I've cut out 6 Trygon/Tervigon bases and a Heirodule base out of Plexiglas because of the increased weight
