Hey guys;

Has anywhere shown what colour a Space Marine Captain's / Chapter Master's helmet would be? Since, Red denotes a Sergeant, and White a veteran, I'm curious if anywhere mentions what a Captain / Chapter Master's helmet would look like.

I play Ultramarines, if that makes a difference.

Ultramarines captain helmet's are blue with a white laurel wreath and a Roman crest.

Looking in "How to Paint Space Marines" there is no special distinction for Brother Captains helmets wise.

It is, thank you. Just need to find a crest! Would the same be for a Terminator, or would it just be Blue with a white laurel? (Or blue with a white stripe, as the case may be.)

I would assume a chapter master would probably pick what helmet he felt like wearing, colour and shape, who's gonna tell him no?, the guys a chapter master.

Nope nothing special on the head. To be honest they are usually bare headed, if not the helmet is blue. They do however make up for it with a colossal amount of stuff hanging off them and those annoying backpack banners of course.

I would say blue with a white strip would look cool. The crest I would leave off unless you were going for the pre-heresy top-knot on the back.

Yes, I can understand the no helmet from the cool model point of view, but Marneus Calgar should be wearing a helmet for the Vox Caster and other benefits from wearing a helmet.

GW produced a book called "Insignium Astartes" [ISBN 1-84 154-245 -8], it's an excellent reference and details a heap of variations for Ultramarines as well as some non-standard chapters.

Of interest would be the personal heraldry of each Company Captain. Each company has a set colour and the Codex specifies this as well as the basic pattern behind the Heraldry. 5th Company Ultramarine, for example is Black, quartering the banner or shoulder pad with the Chapter colours.

While the Captain does not have a specific colour for the helmet (Most Ultramarines default to Blue above the rank of Veteran Sergeant), master artificer's have been known to embellesh armour. Scrollwork, laurel wreathes, skulls, Chapter badges and various other decoration is not uncommon.

Codex Astartes is a Guide, not a Rulebook, you know...

I mean, Chapter Master will be using a relic helmet, something old and great, that he thinks looks cool and honour old Chapter Masters. Heraldry in this case is not so important, he is the chapter Master, everyone in the Chapter must know this...

I think it more likely that the helmet will be blue but there is nothing in the codex that says it can't be gold or bronze.

Here's a question, do you think Calgar would have a helmet with wings on it like the honour guard or a crest or something else?

The rules you are mentioning are very chapter specific. Color schemes, awards, insignia's and such are not prescribed by the Codex Astares. Even within codex compliant chapters you will see a lot of variation.

Heck, even within the companies of the ultramarines you see some variation.

I plan on giving Marneus Calgar the Terminator helmet with the bionic eye and painting it gold, simple but stands out.
As for general Captains, I'm halfway through building Captain Fabian of the 3rd Company, I've given him a Mk.III helmet (the Company Champion one), and plan on painting it blue with a gold faceplate and laurels, just to make him stand out a little.

would you happen to know if that book covers any of the Salamanders companies? I've had a devil of a time finding good reference material for those guys.

Since they're so rarely depicted with their helmets, I suppose there would be a lot of creative license there. I imagine it would be the chapter's veteran colors (such as the Ultramarines' white) detailed with whatever the chapter or company's colors of honor may be.

For instance, a helmeted captain in my chapter (whose primary colors are blue and bare metallic gray, and for which I use silver to denote veterancy) would be gunmetal on a gray undercoat with details of silver on a black undercoat (giving it a different sheen than the gray) and blue eyes and features.
