This should another fairly easy one: I have a Chaos Dreadnought supporting a CSM squad. As they move forward the Dread goes crazy and I roll to assault the supported squad (assume it's the overall closest unit). After the dust settles, assume the CSM squad has survivors, does the Dread say, "My bad, guys. We cool?", and the units aren't locked in combat? Or do they stay locked in combat till someone is victorious? Also apply the same rules for: another Dreadnought and vehicles (both able and unable to drive away).
Lastly, do I need to make the sanity roll even if I'm stuck in with a friendly unit? And if I do and roll Fire Frenzy do I just ignore the roll or treat him as Sane that turn? Hopefully all this mish-mash makes sense. Have never played with Chaos Dreads so that' s why I'm asking. Thanks as always.

No worries; with a new unit it always helps to double-check the rules. In this case both of these are covered in the codex (page 40).
A) The Dreadnought never assaults friendly units. If he rolls fire frenzy he shoots the closest unit in his LOS, friend or foe. But if he rolls blood frenzy he moves & runs toward and assaults (if possible) the closest ENEMY unit.
B) You only roll for "unengaged" Dreadnoughts. You don't roll if they're engaged in close combat.

I've had ups and downs.. CSM are my only army but i love dreadnaught models. Some games their giant tin cans that soak up firepower but never see the fight.
One game I brought 2, one of them fire frenzied onto a plague marine squad with a twin linked heavy flamer and killed all of my plague marines. While the 2nd dreadnaught killed a deffdread, and then the next turn shot a krak missle into the rear of another deffdread.. killing 2 deffdreads! =D I've also tied up Warboss's with dreadnaughts for 3 turns!

Make sure you read the latest FAQ, which reinforced the 5th ed rules relating to vehicle LOS rules - makes fire frenxy that much more manageable

This is an important part of Dreads for us these days. TL;DR, dreadnaughts will only fire frenzy against the nearest target in their 45 degree front arc (don't pivot to select the nearest unit).
With clever positioning the Rage rules can actually be rather useful. Getting off 4 twin-linked autocannon shots or two plasmacannons or two lascannons against an enemy unit can be nice, although you rarely get to choose the target and risk hitting your own guys. More importantly, I keep a DCCW on my dread so that when he fleets across the table he can actually do some damage. This causes opponents to pay attention to him and shoot at him, which is good for me because it means he is *NOT* shooting at other, more important targets. Usually he dies or something, but just occasionally he will survive and completely frustrate my enemy - it messes up their entire game.
When he works, it is brilliant, and I wouldn't trade his 105 points for anything.

Guys dreads always only shot at things in their LOS, 45 degrees from their weapons, people just can't read the rules.
Re-read the frenzy rules, the firing is against everything, including allies, but the assault isn't.
I always run 3 dreads in my CSM list. Works great, all with extra DCCW, extra armor and heavy flamer. A steal at 360 points for all three.
They've saved me many times, though one is usually dicking off in the corner firing at rocks.

My rulebook says walkers pivot in the shooting phase which does not count as moving. This is how chaos walkers were always played before the FAQ, you had to pivot your dread to the closest target much like anyone pivots their dread to engage what ever target they would normally shoot at. The FAQ actually doesn't make any sense, no one played it that way which was why chaos walkers were considered rubbish. They would fire frenzy, turn their low armored back to the enemy, and blast some friendlies. Much like the lash FAQ doesn't make any sense calling it a psychic shooting attack, or the warptime FAQ not making any sense with having to reroll *all* the dice.
Whoever wrote the recent chaos FAQ is a moron, reversing all of the common sense ways people had played those powers for what, 4 years?

Thanks all. I reread the rules on page 40 and it makes total sense. Maybe I should read my rules more closely before posting? My main reason for using them is the conversion potential. Working on my second from an Ironclad Dread; first was a Furioso (pics posted). I enjoy a little random for fun (Ork player at heart) so this seemed to fight in just fine. Thanks again to everyone.

If you read the fire frenzy rule, it states you turn towards the closest visible unit. Vehicles, dreads included cannot see beyond what their weapons can see. Dread weapons have a LOS of a 45 degree arc from their weapons. You were supposed to play it this way, but no one can read the rules.
I played it the way the FAQ says and always have, because that's what the rules say to do, and I had people complain I was cheating. I told them to look it up and kept playing, and I had to do this with almost every opponent.

Kevlar - again, "everyone" just played it wrong. Plain and simple You pivot towards the visible unit, meaning you must detrmine what is visible, which can only be what is within 45 degrees of the weapon mounts. That was it.
Trouble is people were used to 180 degree LOS from 4th ed, incorrectly assumed this carried over into 5th, and just played the wrong rules.
