Hey I got this recently (well a year ago) and have been (slowly) painting them. I have taken ages because I don't use them in my army, so they have kind of fallen by the wayside to do whenever I feel like a treat. One question has been bugging me though, why the feth do they have a plasma gunner? I can only think of one bloke (the Commissar) who uses a plasma weapon, and that's only his pistol. Can anyone think of a situation when the ghosts used a plasma gun? And I mean being issued it, not a point in a book where they have it for one paragraph and then dump it (which I think the bionic arm sarge does at some point, but the model just flat out isn't him). Just curious is all, if I had been making the box then instead of the plasma gunner I would have either had Bragg with a ML/HB/AC or Brostin with his lovely flamer.

Presumably at some point someone did.
But if it totally followed the books Gaunt would be unkillable.
Actually, I'd be up for that.

Just because one of the main characters doesn't use a plasma gun, why would that stop you from using one? In one of the books, someone has a melta gun. In one of the GW Chapter Approves, they have a Gaunt's Ghost list. I know for sure they can't have a lascannon at all. I remember Bragg had an autocannon in one of the books if that helps at all.

I am using the model, I was just wondering if anyone could remember them using it in the books.

I don't remember any named character, other than Commissar Hark, carrying a plasma weapon of any kind. Though, when it comes to this unit on the tabletop

It is best to be a pessimist. You are usually right and, when you're wrong, you're pleasantly surprised. |

The only time plasma guns are mentions is when the Vitrian Dragoons carry them in First and Only. The Tanith never carry anything but flamers for special weapons, and rarely use anything besides missile launchers and stubbers as heavy weapons (note that Abnett seems to switch between calling Autocannons stubbers, to him, they're the same weapon). The only time anyone used a heavy weapon that wasn't a 'stubber' or a missile launcher was Bragg on Monthax, when he had a pair of heavy bolters and a single heavy bolter on Voltemand, and an Assault Cannon on Fortis Binary..

Minor point, Loki:
Abnett doesn't "switch between calling autocannons stubbers". He mentions heavy stubbers quite a few times, but the effects they have are pretty big...considering the majority of what the Ghosts are fighting is unarmored filth.

There is actually a couple of points in the first few books where he mentions someone carrying an autocannon, and then says they fire their stubber, which made me think Abnett considers them the same. Probably just forgetting what he had the guy carrying.

Are you sure about that?
The only time I remember autocannons explicitly being mentioned was that whole convoy bit with Bragg.
God, now I have to find my books...

Pretty sure. Like I said, I reread the entire series a couple of weeks ago. I think it was in the first 4 books.

The GW page on it mentions that there's a single Tanith trooper, and it doesn't say who's carrying what (but it's fairly obvious Larks is the sniper and Dorden is the medicae) so it could just be a red shirt trooper with a plasma gun to give more firepower.

I think Loki might be right think a couple of time he refers to an autocannon being a 30. cal (stubber), I think is a reasonable confusion though as a solid projectile assault rifle is an auto gun.
I have to admitt I can't remember any ghosts using plasma. Sniper rifles, flamers, stubbers, auto cannon, tread fethers (missile launchers) are the one that they use the most.
