I was wondering if the flamer which the space marine assault squad can take is a proper two handed flamer or a pistol? I ask because it says it is replacing the bold pistol and doesn't say about the chainsword. I just want to know how to build the model really.

Doesn't matter. As long as it is visibly recognized as a flamer weapon. The other weapon has to be the chainsword if that is what the codex says. But nobody cares if you use a pistol and a flamer either.

Two handed. Even though it replaces a bolt pistol it is the normal flamer. The hand flamer is a pistol.

From a modeling perspective, don't bother giving the model a chainsword.

You can give the model a chainsword and one hand the flamer, or as said you can just give the guy a flamer.

And, it's important to note, that in terms of the rules, it is not a pistol. So, it doesn't count as a CCW.
