So Im painting the guns for my marines separately so I can get to all the lovely chest detail. How should I do this best? The guns have been removed from the sprue so I figured I could just glue the back of them down to an old piece of sprue? How do you lot do it?

I build and pose my marines then remove the gun from their hands i then hold them by the barrel and paint them up to m fingers with a thin coat so by the time i get to my fingers they are dry at the other end.... then i just swap em round to do the barrel.... then i put it back in their hands to wash and detail it.... simple yet effective

Hmm that seems like a good idea. I might drill out the barrel and shove a toothpick up it and paint it like that.

Have you cut the handles off the guns yet?

You could hold them by the handle or just glue the handle to a piece of sprue and cut it off later.

If you have cut the handle off, you could still glue that point to a piece of sprue with one tiny dot of superglue. The guns should come off easily and that point will be all/mostly covered when it's attached to the hand anyway.

Best of luck!

um... my computer?

The way Ive always done it is to drill the gun barrel and stick a toothpick in to hold it. It usually holds it tight enough so you dont have to glue it. Then get a piece of styrofoam and stick the toothpick in so you dont have to lay them down while theyre drying. I actually use this trick for a lot of smaller parts, but sometimes you do have to use a small drop of glue.

one thing about the toothpick idea, as I just ran into this over the weekend... when you pull the toothpick out it may leave the mouth of the barrel a bit rough where the paint sticks to the toothpick. not a big deal, you just have to go back and finish it up. also, if you prime while it's on the toothpick you'll want to paint the inside of the barrel after you remove it. I had my heavy flamer all done and purdy, pulled out the toothpick and had a big, gray hole staring back at me :p

for infantry guns where you don't see one side of them (i.e., a bolter that's held close to the chest or whatnot), I cut a toothpick in half and glue the thick end to the side of the gun with a bit of elmers. this gives me full access to the barrel while I'm painting and the toothpick and glue pop right off when I'm done; slap a bit of black where the toothpick was and you're done!
