Been Around the Block

Hey everyone. I just started my first 40K army a few weeks ago. I've always been interested but now I finally know people/have the money to play.
I'm starting an Ork army, haven't built any vehicles yet. My question is if I paint them red, as per fluff, do I always have to take the red paint job upgrade?
I understand the importance of WYSIWYG when it comes to weapons and armor for sake of clarity,
but it doesn't make sense to me to have specific red and non-red vehicles just cause I want the options to tinker with my forces between battles.
Not to mention the cost involved.
My first Dakka post. Thanks.

well if you use the GW's red, then decide you don't want the red paint job upgrade, just say "that's not red, its orange"

As long as you make your opponent aware of it then i doubt that you will have any problems, i paint all my Orks as Bad Moons (i love yellow, hell to paint, but i like the colour) and adding red to it would just ruin the paint scheme imho, and i have never had an issue with it.

You are never forced to pay the points for the upgrade if you don't want it. It's like saying, I painted marines blue, I can only field them as ultramarines and never as blood angels.
Around here, it's kind of become a running joke that even if they're painted a completely different color you can give them the red paint job. As for the why we allow it, the ork that painted it was color blind. Most people won't have a problem with it, so long as you pay the points and make them aware of it before the game.

I don't have a problem with people using a different color for a Red Paint Job, provided two conditions are met:
1. All vehicles with a Red Paint Job represent it with the SAME color (even if it is, say, blue).
2. All vehicles with the afforementioned color actually HAVE the Red Paint Job upgrade.
We have an out of town player who's vehicles are yellow, and I don't see a reason to make a stink out of it.

i dont care if you have red paint or not. just tell me wich vehicles have the red paint upgrade, and if you have more of the same vehicles without it, mark them by putting boys in the back, a paper counter or something else to they are not confused.
the biggest thing to remember with wysiwyg is if you generally show and tell, and make it verbally clear, and have a written army list you can get away without actually modelling the required upgrade. i think the only exception would be something large like a deffrolla or simaler.

In general as long as the ones which have it have some sort of consistent marking or representation you should be good. Whether it's a different colored paint job, or racing stripes, or a rocket-booster rigged on to the back, or whatever.
IME most people aren't sticklers over it, but IMO it's best to exceed expectations rather than presume upon people's understanding and put the burden on them to remember.

I have little grot markers for my RPJ vehicles,
Take the grot arms from the grots box that are holding a stikkbomb, and model on a paintbrush head dripping red, with the stikkbomb head as the ferrule (sp?) behind the brush hairs.
Place said grot on or next to any vehicle with RPJ, and paint them however you please

Just plan on giving RPJ to all of your vehicles that can take it, because that's the orky way to do it.
