Subject: Maximising your unit with the enemy unit.

Often people debate about when a unit charges into another unit, you maximise the models into base contact with each other. Getting as many into base contact as you can.
The debate comes when you deal with a charge that clips the enemy unit. You will normally wheel to close the door to get in as many as you can ( thus maximising - and the only place I see this written in the book is under Aligning to the enemy in the BRB under page 20) but some people will debate saying you must "Slide" the unit over as much as you can to get all of the units in base to base instead of 2 in base to base and the other 3 or more hanging out on the end.
So what is the correct interpretation of this? Or is there an interpretation to be had? Technically I don't think there really is a rule that says you Must maximise base to base contact when you engage an enemy unit. The only place I see anything about that is where I just mentioned, and that is for the sake of closing the door once you've clipped the unit at an angle on a charge.
Or are you expected ( through rule or otherwise) to finish your round of combat no matter how many models you have in base contact, and then at the end of combat you would reform to maximise ( by choice or force?) to have more models engaging for the next round of close combat?

Sliding is Illegal.
Maximizing is done with the charge move itself. If the charge can only clip the unit then that is the maximum that can be achieved.
Reforms can slide the unit to maximize but the charge itself is what does the initial maximization.
Units may only make 1 wheel when they charge. If they cannot hit more models with that one wheel then they have maximized.
These pictures may help.

Great pics! Did you have those on hand, or are they something you made just for this question?

Just for this. I had been planning on it because this question has been coming up fairly often lately.

I like 'em, nice work. They illustrate this point, and also the way charges can be completed that aren't always all that obvious.

You have to be careful. I'd argue that because unit C may be blocking LOS to unit A.

From his diagram it is easy to see there are no LoS issues with that charge. Left side of the charging unit has clear LoS to the charged unit.

With that diagram, there is no LoS issues at the beginning. But we're entering tricky territory. Not to mention, the unit loses LoS during the charge of the unit they're charging during the charge, which would be a hotbutton issue. I would call a TO over and argue this 100%.

The only time LoS is checked is when you declare: it is not required to maintain it throughout the charge. If you can show where it says you must maintain LoS throughout the charge, please post a page. Otherwise, there is no prohibition that exists about that.

The diagram also shows the charging unit always moving closer to its target so ya its legit.
Nicely done.
Grey ever thought about starting something with more of these sort of pictures and explanations maybe even tricks and tips?
