so as i stage above there was wondering if WE are still a viable army...more so are any woodelves themes still viable and competative enough?

They can still reliably MSU, which is annoying for the magic heavy and Deathstar armies out there...

Yes, but they're not the best army out there. In short, to do well with them in a competitive environment, you need to be able to use them well because you can't rely on abusive builds or OP combinations to win games for you.

There is a guy here on dakka that runs Wood Elves' he runs them in a MSU style with a decent amount of success (from what I have seen on his youtube reports). I believe any army is competative, the real question is whether the general is able to maximize their effectiveness through his/her style of play is another thing.

Ok well my aim is actually to get a decent themed but competitive army...i already have ogres and brettonia...and i just thought WE would be a nice change. i have a tree idea

I only really play 2k games and by competative i dont expect to be entering tournemnets just dont want to get my ass kicked everyday...

and theme is important to me. my main issue with the WE is the magic. and with a branchwraith its worse

Everything there is flammable right?
Because most armies have some flaming weapons knocking about to deal with hydras, HPAs etc, those trees are going to burn.

Otherwise:
No steadfast, no magic defence, only 56 models, nothing with ranged weapons asfaik.
It would look cool on a woodland board, but no. its not competitive.

a LVL 4 Life, and Tree Kin or mass Treement are two good builds.

I tend to go with the mass shooting lists- 65-70 Glade Guard, a handful of Dryads, a few Waywatchers and then a couple of eagles. In bigger games I'm using Treekin more and more and so far I'm very happy with them overall.

I also run Beasts instead of Life, for a couple of reasons- first up, Wildform is just an incredibly spell on Treekin and Dryads and you're guaranteed to get it. Amber Spear is also a very useful tool. Unless I'm going with lots of big trees, I don't really see much use from Life beyond Dwellers, and as god as that may be I just find the idea of taking a Lore just for the super killy death spell to be one of the worst ways to play the game. That's just me though, Life does have it's merits but it's not always the best option in my opinion.

No dryads arnt flamable. But i see your point...i think alk shooting is probably best... 2mages? Life and beasts? Then a ton of glade gaurd and waywatchers? And as a theme is important to me dryads treekin dont fit in the gkade gaurd list...

I had the misfortune of facing an MSU army at 2400 points at a tourney last weekend.

From memory

Level 4 with the wardancers
Level 2
Branchwraith
BSB - with the wardancers
Lord - With the wardancers and he or the BSB had the moonstone

4 x12 archers
2 great eagles
2 x5 waywatchers
2x 5 glade riders
4 x 8 dryads
10 or 12 wardancers

He just kept retreating and rediverting me and the character/wardancer deathstar teleported to a forest behind my lines.
Then 1 unit of dryads managed to kill 900 points of NGs and characters. .
One of the most annoying games I've ever played as only 1 of us was playing, the other was avoiding playing.
I killeed 2 eagles and 1 unit glade guard and 1 unit of glade riders.
