What it says on the tin, really.
Currently I'm planning on using mine (either scything talons or LW & BS, depending on points) to babysit units on the fringe of my synapse bubble, and help out as powerful CC reinforcements.
What do people use theirs for? Do you take regen? What weapons? How do you find they play in practice?

I only ever use mine with a squad of Tyranid Warriors along with him for the alpha warrior rule. That said I gave him a deathspitter and Double bone swords. I try to use mine to hunt down hq's/elites. If you want to use yours as a flank guard and line reinforcement then you might just grab rending claws since you won't need the guns as the unit you want to attack will already be locked in combat with something else when you send them in to help.

He can be used as a good Alabative wound with his T5, for things that would ID T4.
You just need to deck him out for his purpose in the Army. With the Nid book, your HQ choices really depend on the rest of your army.

Why would you take one in the first place? I've never seen them get into combat as a result of them just being shot to pieces

This. Stick him with deathspitter/bonesword warriors, and throw them at elites, and laugh as you tear them to pieces.

T5 IC for Ablative Wounds, with Higher WS, BS, Str, T, and Int than a warrior and a better save. If he joins to Warriors he makes them all WS 6, BS 4, and is cheaper than any other HQ by as much as 50% or a lot more in the case of the Swarmlord or hive tyrants. He is the most flexible Nid HQ.

Has anybody had any luck running a warrior death star with 9 warriors and 2 primes with different gear but both with regen? Seems like you could do some crazy wound allocation shenanigans to fully reap the rewards of the regen, and the 6 prime wounds should go a long way towards protecting the warriors from ID. Also it would be a naturally selection for Catalyst. Or maybe just one prime and Swarmy to drop force multiplying goodness all over them? Just some rando thoughts this thread inspired...

I have in a 1k game - nuked 2 units of CSM and most of one unit of KB before the game ended. And by nuked I mean "Dear god what happened to those CSMs?" edit: I haven't risked it in higher points games yet... not sure why.

There are too many things that can shoot it off the table without much effort... Otherwise it could be very nasty indeed.

Well, with 2 primes with regen, plus a heavy weapon warrior, plus all the normal warriors... it would take a little bit of effort.
That's 4 wound groups, 2 of which can't be ID'd by missiles.

Gargoyles make for a nice mobile cover save in these situations.

I find that Warriors do best in small broods with one Prime attached. If they all have bone swords and lash whips plus toxin sacs for the Warriors they are quite lethal in close combat. I prefer to run a small brood so they have a relatively small foot print. Sure you can screen them and run two Primes but still enemy units such as Long Fangs and psyflemen are going to get some shots through that insta gib Warriors. Also you are clustering up a lot of your synapse and I'd rather spread that out. If the Prime could ride in a spore with the Warriors I think it would work a lot better for a large brood.

Stubborn Temple Guard
|
I usually run a Prime with Scything Talons and dual Boneswords. I usually run him with any Warrior unit I feel like, because his benefits help with either a shooty or CC brood.
In any case, his objective is always to base anything with power armor I can and power weapon it to death.
And I usually put Regen on them, but I put it on almost all of my MCs. But I fight Guard a LOT, and need the ability to recover any wounds I can.
