So as the subejct has stated, I haven't played any Apoc games yet. I don't have the rulebooks, no Imperial Armour stuff, nothing.
But recently, I started thinking about building a new army and I wanted to make it Apocalypse-based mainly. Before I start working on it and start buying all these pretty new IA and Apoc books, I have a couple questions first:
A while back, a friend of mine told me that in Apoc, the Force Organization chart was basically thrown out the window and isn't used. Is this true? As in I can have as much of one unit type (HQ, Fast attack, etc.) as I want within the points limit?
I'm wanting to make my army a traitor-based army with IG and SM. I'm able to use both codices for my apoc army, right? Or is that illegal in the rules?
I'm not trying to sound like a noob or sound completely ignorant about Apoc. I've just never played it before and I wanted to make sure my army idea was legal to do.

Apoc is essentially anything goes. In the Apoc games I have played, people have used multiple codecies, including IG and greyknights for one player.
No there is no FOC, though in Apoc 2nd ED only troops can cap objectives now. So yes, run as many land raiders as you would like.
Unlimited Range items are now limited to 72", unless otherwise stated. And you can do whatever you like, for example, I ran Abaddon, Kharn, Draigo, and Typhus in a LRC with 4 Achilles land raiders for backup in one game.

1. Correct. There is no force organization chart.
2. IG and SM make a lot of sense from a story standpoint. That would work just fine in our group. We try to stick to a "fluffy" apoc game as much as possible. We would not run a Grey Knight army with Chaos Daemons, as an example.

IMO it is really only good in 2 cases.
If there is NOT 17 200pt armies each side.
If each side has a miasma of Apoc units like TItans.
Sure a reaver titan is cool and all, but if it is the only Superheavy or GC then that team wins. Not that the Titan itself does.much, it just ends up every player under 15 belts it with everything they can and the handful of Veteran Players send their Terminator Squad to death against 3000pts of enemy.

Just to add alittle bit to this. A general rule of thumb in Apoc events is that if you want to run the fancy things from the Apoc book or the IA books you better have the acutal model or a damn cool conversion to run it, proxying isn't often allowed as an APOC game is confusing enough. This meens no Storm Raven counts as Thunderhawks or Land Raider counts as Land Raider Achilles....

100% agreement, here. Either have the model or something that looks very much like it or is a good conversion. Rule of Cool generally wins with our group.
One guy made a titan out of legos. It sounds silly, but it looks awesome. Also, the damn thing is made out of more $$$ worth of legos than buying an actual titan would. Rule of Cool: He can play with it in our Apoc games.

Including fun. It goes out long before the "game" starts. It's not really a game either.

"'players must agree how they are going to select their armies, and if any restrictions apply to the number and type of models they can use."
This is an actual rule in the actual rulebook. Quit whining about how you can imagine someone's army touching you in a bad place and play by the actual rules.

We've played 6 or seven Apoc games in the last 3 years. All of them have been among the best times we've had playing 40k.
I would not, however, play Apocalypse games with strangers. I don't imagine that would be fun at all.
