So I'm in the market to finally purchase some decent cases to transport my armies around. I originally liked KR's cardboard box setup as I could store all my miniatures in those and simply select the appropriate boxes when I was going out for a game. This was recently challenged by the fact that the owner of a FLGS advised me that battlefoam was coming out with some kind of shelving unit or storage option to keep the foam trays in when at home. He also is an biased battlefoam supporter though so I take his opinions with that in mind.

Anyways, I tried purchasing the battlefoam army tray package for one of my armies and was disappointed to discover that the spaces are very snug for each mini. This poses a problem since I have resin bases on each of my infantry models and cosmetic accessories on vehicles. So they either didn't fit at all or were so tight that I was concerned about pieces breaking off. So if I'm going to go with battlefoam that means custom trays for everything.

At this point I'm trying to get the opinion of anyone who may be fortunate to have own/owned cases of both manufacturers or at least has had experience with BOTH through other gamers or friends. I'm not really interested in knowing how good one case is without having the experience with the other to be able to compare.

Thanks!

Both manufactueres have their advantages however I lean heavily towards battlefoam for my GW stuff.

What army are you trying to store and what resin bases are you using. The reason I ask about the bases is because most of them shouldn't add enough height to make storing models a problem.

Romeo could kick that other guy's ass in a bar fight.

I also use some resin and scenic bases and have a hard time fitting some of those miniatures in my battle foam bag.

I can't speak about KR as no one i know uses one.

Having meet the owners of both companies I'm inclined to agree with you.

If you have a hard time fitting standard troops into a tray you can always go with an infantry tray with larger cut outs.

For example I've had a hard time fitting my Space Marine Infantry into the Space Marine Troop Foam Tray where the majority of the cut outs are 1" x 1.5". Instead I use the 60 Large Model Foam Tray which gives me 1.25" x 1.5" cut outs. As far as vehicles go with few exceptions your best bet space wise is to get something custom cut.

@ Catyrpelius: Thanks for that! I have had to put some of my infantry in the jump pack marine and terminator marine slots. Even then, I still can't get the marines I gave back pack banners (Command squad, some HQ's, Pedro Cantor, some Sergeants) into anything. I just wrap them in a paper towel and stick them in an empty rhino slot for now.

Works well enough.

I also bought a few trays for large models (orks) and that helps some, too.

@ Kronk: I don't know if you may have missed it on their site but they actually have a large selection of Troop Trays and a specific section of their website entirely devoted to them. On a side note, I've also used some of the Beastmen trays to great effect for my Space Marines.

I haven't purchased from them since last year's GenCon. I was going to bring one of my sergeants with a large banner to GenCon this year and see what they can do for me.

Perhaps I'll poke around on their site this afternoon.

I also recommend calling them up and talking to them, they will generally bend over backwards to help you make your amry fit.

I'd love a tight fitting case for this guy. I've had to put the damn banner back on 3 times now.

Man, that guy sure loves banners!

With him your best bet might be sending them a trace.

My resin bases aren't anything crazy, just some slate looking ones. The most that any of them add is 1/4" with some being as little as 1/8" but like I said, battlefoam was very snug. It also wasn't that friendly towards any common dynamic poses such as a model holding a sword up. I am currently looking for my Blood Angels but I have plans for other armies in the future. My tanks have a couple of the forgeworld purity seals on the sides and that was enough to make me nervous.

The blood angels tray set I bought I returned simply because I had no use for the tray that held Tact. marines since I own none and the assault marines and independent characters weren't fitting too well with the bases.

I ended up calling battlefoam and they said that I should just submit a custom tray using their on site creator and attach a note advising of customization that their web creator wasn't able to accommodate.

@Catyrpelius, why do you lean towards battlefoam over KR for your GW stuff?

Battlefoam is rather good, apparently the best you can get (unsure if it IS but that's what's said).

Personally I go with KR for versatility, those cool little hardcases and that a store within walking distance sells them reasonably cheap (I think the same or slightly lower than direct from KR, but without the P&P costs.)

But aswell as that, the infantry trays are decent (20 slots per half-sheet), with a generous amount of space ( my DE Warriors and Wracks, as well as Tau Firewarriors and Pathfinders all sit 2 to a slot, Though marines will probably still only be 1-per. And for a banner-wielding one, simply remvoing a small chunk of foam so it can sit across 2 vertical slots is easy enough).
I mean, I've got 6 DE Raiders, a Razorwing, 3 Talos, 3 Venoms, 6 Reaver Jetbikes, 8 Haemonculi, 2-3 Archons, a few incubi (I think 8-10?), 8 Harlequins, 20 DE Warriors, 30 Wracks, a Tau Ethereal, 30 or so Fire Warriors, 15 or so Pathfinders, 6 Stealth Suits... I'm sure I'm missing something... in a medium sized ('4 tray') Black metal KR Case. That was 30something pounds at the time, including foam.

There are a few reasons I say this, the first is simply space. Square inch per square inch no other storage sulotion holds as much as battlefoam. Even though KR has a custom tray creator the size of their trays doesn't mesh efficently with GW vehicles.

Second is the weight of the models. I don't know about you but I have a few armies that are entierly metal, I also have several armies that have alot of metal models included with them. In my opinion the foam that KR uses isn't sufficiant to support the weight of metal models and account for shifting when traveling.

Third if you have a large army KR is no longer a cheap alternative. Once you have to start carrying more then 2 boxes around their storage sulutions get expensive.

Last is that quite simply I don't trust there foam and cardboard boxes that much. With where I am in my life right now I have plenty of money but I lack time. I'd rather pay more money out of pocket not to have to repaint and repair models that break or become damaged due to a more budget friendly option. If you have the chance I suggest looking at KR foam and cases, they work but to me the whole thing feels cheap and unreliable. My biggest gripe is that unlike Battlefoam, KR trays do not have a more dense bottom to give them some much needed support.

Now with all that said there are certain areas where KR excels specifically; storing simgle pose skirmish models, storing flames of war or anything of that scale etc...

As a Tyranid player, I wouldn't go with anything but Battlefoam. Their laser cut trays are the best.

Whose laser cut trays are the best? Battlefoam's? In which case (pun not intended), why go with anything but that?

Mandorallen turned back toward the insolently sneering baron. 'My Lord,' The great knight said distantly, 'I find thy face apelike and thy form misshapen. Thy beard, moreover, is an offence against decency, resembling more closely the scabrous fur which doth decorate the hinder portion of a mongrel dog than a proper adornment for a human face. Is it possibly that thy mother, seized by some wild lechery, did dally at some time past with a randy goat?' - Mimbrate Knight Protector Mandorallen.

KR Multicase is cheaper and the owners are class acts. There's a lot of sketchy information about some of the Battlefoam guys you can dig up if you look for it, and that, along with price, is one reason why I'll choose KR over them every time.

Runnin up on ya.

I use KR for my Grey Knights, GW for my Vanilla Marines and Sabol for my Ogres. I love KR's prices, versatility and the cool little cardboard carrying case which is all I need to walk from car to game shop.

Hey Loki, maybe it's just me, but in the Termagant Tray, I find they fit better when they are put in on their sides. I thought at first it was how it was in your picture, but I started putting them on their sides, and they fit much more snug, and secure.

Battlefoam for me, is the best. Hands down, if you have the money go Battlefoam.

I don't mind them wiggling a bit in there. It's not like they're going to break.

I love my Battlefoam. I wish their "carry on" bag used the normal battlefoam trays, as I have already bought all the trays I need for my armies and would love to start travelling for games. That said, the trays are amazing. My models do not break between games anymore. I have about 12 feet worth of trays for all my armies. I own a 720 bag and a 1520 bag, and that seems like all I'll ever need. The rest of the foam sits on my shelves in my garage. There's supposed to be a carboard storage box for sale soon, but I have not seen it. At least then they won't collect dust, and they will stack taller. I have found that after two feet high, the bottom foams will collapse a bit if the top foams are holding a lot of metal figs.
