So I have an overly generous friend who gave me a stormraven. I love the model, can't wait to start painting it.

However I just have a question:
Can I use it in a CSM army?

My army is a custom chapter (splinter group of Iron Warriors), highly mobile/mechanised force - so as far as
background it would fit quite well - just wondering how it would go as far as rules/army lists.

No.

Currently there is no allowance for you to include them in a non BA or GK army

If it comes to tournament play, it's a no go on the model. That's because it's not from the CSM codex.

Most times in a friendly game people won't have too much of a problem with it though. Remember, you can always run a blood angels army with your Iron warriors marines, and say that to represent their speed and mobile nature, you felt this codex best personified your chapter.

If you are playing Apoc rules, then you can use it.

If you are not playing Apoc, then you can not use the SR with the CSM's because the SR is not in the CSM Codex.

thanks. I'll have to have a look at the BA codex and see if it fits the rest of the army I already have.

In friendly games as long a you let the opponent know you'd like to use it ahead of time most people wont care, you still need to get permission and will want to be specific about if you want to use the GK or BA version as they have different weapons, costs, and force organization slots.

If you really want to use one, just make a counts as chaos blood angels army. Death company can be berzerkers, anything with feel no pain can be plague marines, ect ect.

Sounds like your custom chapter (highly mobile and mechanized, CSM so armed with BP & CCW) would be a good fit for codex: blood angels, actually. They have assault squads for troops, and said squads get a discount on transports. Iron Warriors classically use a lot of heavy support too, and blood angels have excellent HS- Storm Ravens, Fast Vindicators, Fast Predators, and cheap Devastators.

if it was me i would look at making a Chaos version of it (tweakign the weapons/rules slightly to more closely match CSM norms).

Does the SR have PotMS? if so drop it and switch to DP perhaps?

i woudl have no porblem lettign it go in a friednly game, although i woudl be happier if you put some effort into amking it more closely match your army rather than just dropping SM rules into a CSM army.

I've gotten to use a baneblade in a friendly normal match before =)

Heck anything goes in friendly games. It's all down to how friendly it gets lol. I've played a guy using green army men before. It just depends how bored you get.

A chaos brigade of raptors with jump infantry and such plus stormravens would fit quite nicely.

Just make it removable from it's flight stand. Friendly game or Apoc: use as Stormraven. Tourney or competitive game: counts as Land Raider and count the wings as hull.

Note: in Apoc, most imperial units can be used as Chaos versions. I'm not sure this includes units in a Codex, just those in an Apoc book. You couldn't field Marneus Calgar for instance.
