At the wife's insistence for our 3 year old son.
First tablet computing I've done.

This is the second dakka posting on it and it is great.

Bought the wireless keyboard and am typing this on it. Bit disconcerting having to touch the screen rather than use a mouse but no real dramas.

Already have 2 aps for our son, and downloaded skype to use for video calls long distance.

Kindle ap to come to sync to my kindle.
Also I works, I photos and numerous other I thingys.

Need to transfer my music across and some books....

Anyone else have one yet?

Automatically Appended Next Post:
On the downside, already stumbled over a flash based site the wife likes to watch her TV shows on that she missed earlier in the week.

No flash for Apple = silly.

I've used the ipad 2 before, but not owned one.

The 3 seems quicker.
We don't have the correct 4G in Australia (I bought the 4g version anyway as it will use 3G and wireless. Will see how much we need 3G (I suspect very little) and work from there on determining plans and carriers.

The wireless keyboard is brilliant, as an aside.

iPad 3? I thought there was only the iPad, iPad 2 and the iPad?

Also, "silly" is not the word I think of when it comes to Apple's lack of flash support.

I'm tempted to buy an iPad 2 now, because they've lowered the price by £80 or something like that. When I was thinking about getting one before, I didn't want the lowest memory version (8 or16GB, can't remember) but the next one up (32GB I think) was so much more expensive, can't imagine its anywhere near that much more expensive to have that extra memory, but hey Apple are in the business of making 98% profit or more on every item it seems (Not that i'm an Apple hater, posting this on my far to expensive iMac).

So basically is the new iPad really worth the extra cost over the now cheaper iPad 2? Because a couple of months ago, the iPad 2 was the best tablet....

While three-years-old may be a little young, using it as a tool to introduce youngsters to computer technology is probably the only real use I can even think of for an iPad.

My 3 (now nearly four) year old brother can use my Mum's HTC Desire to nearly full use (he may not know exactly what he's doing, but he can open all the games he wants to play, and does other things like changing settings), and has been doing so for quite a while, he can use a computer mouse to play games on the Cbeebies website easily, has been playing the DS for quite a while.

Strange that still a lot of old people can't grasp the technology (my Grandad asks for help with his computer pretty much every other phone call, and he'd panic if he had a touch phone) but a 3 year old is very capable. A few years ago, 3 probably was too young, but now?

My neice is quite capable of using an iPad for playing games and watching the cartoons saved on it.
She's been doing it since she was at least three.

Children are surprisingly fast learners, specially with modern tech. I actually experienced my first "God Dad! You use it like this" the other day with my new xbox. I couldnt figure out how to log out from my account to my sons, and he says that, and shows me how to do it. Mind you I had been messing around with the xbox for an hour or so, and he only had it for a solid 5 minutes. I laughed but thought to myself "Christ......its begun"

My 18th birthday is next month, and my mum told me to find something (unrelated) in her and my dad's room, and there was a cardboard box almost exactly the same size as the box my dad's ipad came in sitting on the floor.

Combine this with the fact that they kept on asking me what I wanted for my brthday, and I didn't know, but shortly after I mentioned that I was thinking of saving up for an Ipad 3, they stopped asking.

I have a sneaking suspicion I know what I'm getting for my birthday.

In your base, ignoring your logic.

3 year olds aren't necessarily "smart" when it comes to iPads and other fun little gadgets. Kids experiment and kids that age are developing hand-eye coordination so something that has bright colors that reacts to touch is an instant hit. For example the game Angry Birds, kids don't know the physics behind it and all that they know is that if they touch the birdies they hit the piggies. Its also like Dora the Explorer, the kids aren't learning how to speak a language, they're learning certain words in Spanish. Oh and those sign language guides are the same thing, you won't be able to carry on a conversation with a kid who learns from those "Your baby can read" tapes. But the kid can point to things and say what they are.

Anyways, have fun with your iPad. I personally never got into them and have an ipod touch with 17 songs on it, two of them being sample songs that came with it, and in general don't use apple products.

Cracker, don't worry about your son getting better at xbox than you. Your hands aren't used to controllers like that and its why I have issues playing xbox too, I'm used to the N64 and playstation controllers myself. But my dad is 50 and is better at a game I showed him how to play than I am, damn old fart.

I'm picking up a 64gb WiFi one when they become available over here.
I don't see the point of the 4G version, most of the use will be in range of a hotspot, and my phone has WiFi tethering.
Why bother with another SIM card/contract?

I have a Samsung Galaxy Tab 10".

It works and I don't have to deal with Apple.
It has everything on it I need the tablet to do, so I don't NEED to d/l apps.
I don't use it for browsing - if I want to do that stuff, I can use my laptop at home - it's purely for being able to take all of my gaming pdfs with me in one package.

I'm OVER 50 (and so far over everyone's BS, too).
Old enough to know better, young enough to not give a ****.

That is not dead which can eternal lie ...

... and yet, with strange aeons, even death may die.

We got an iPad1 for our son before he was 3 (now almost 4.) In a short time, he learned the entire alphabet and numerals. He also has a large vocabulary of words he can spell. We also have some logic apps he does well at.

He can operate it better than Steve Jobs. (and not just because Jobs is returning his elements to the cosmos)

Seems a little excessive for a three year old but whatever floats your wife's boat. I guess if you have the money to spend why not. And you know that you'll use it yourself anyway.

Funnily enough I was of the same opinion until my 3yo learn how to use YouTube on my iPhone after i let her watch an episode of Peppa Pig on it. It started that she would as for another one then after a little while she stopped asking, I though she had gone to sleep but on checking found her surfing her favourite shows through the suggested items using the play button, volume and tilting the screen to best suit her!

Not great parenting but a real eye opener on kids ability to learn. Naturally the mrs was not impressed!
