My fiancee and I will be getting married next year, and are planning on a steampunk themed wedding.
We were looking at steampunk cakes a few days ago, and saw some awesome steampunk wedding cake toppers. Unfortunately, they're all insanely overpriced ($150+ USD). Yesterday afternoon I brought her along with me to the local GW store so I could drool over all the pretty stuff. While we were there, she saw the box for Ork Killa Kans, and thought they might make good wedding cake toppers. After mulling the idea for a day or so, she finally gave me the OK to use them!
Now I have to figure out how to make them properly wedding-y. (Yes, that's a real word because I just created it. Shut up!)
I 'm thinking about making a simple black bowtie for one and a mini wedding veil and small bouquet for the other. How difficult would this be for a novice? Anyone have any other ideas or suggestions?

You could go the whole hog and rig one with a tux and top hat.
It wouldn't be that hard, actually, with the body shape, and the way the arms connect in. Failing that a topper and a ring (washer perhaps) held in one of the claw hands would work.
A bouquet would be easy enough, as would a veil. The Grotzooka ammo hopper and muzzle would work well for the bouquet. The 'head' is round, so veils are easy.
The drill arm would work well if you wanted to pose them with the groom putting the ring on the bride's finger.
You could do one as a priest (or equivilent) one as the bride and one as the groom

Yeah, I'd paint one as if it's wearing a tuxedo or suit, and the other as if it's wearing a wedding dress.
If you know someone with some plasticard conversion skills, then a top hat would be a cool addition. And perhaps even a 'dress' and/or train for the bride robot?
Hmm, unless you love the military look, it might be nice to also swap the weapons for some mechanical 'hands' (although there's at least one claw-like 'hand' in the kit).

Shes a keeper!
For construction, it might be worth making a trip to your local arts and crafts store. Many have sections for wedding invitations, decorations, etc. that have all sorts of miniature wedding-related knickknacks. You might be able to find some tiny ribbon or molded plastic parts in a useable scale. Same for the flowers - while decorative silk flowers don't come that small, you can almost definitely find tiny ribbon or plastic decorations, it's simply a matter of whether they're small enough for your purposes or not. Larger plastic plants sometimes have tiny blooms that also might make a convincing bouquet if lopped off, bundled, and wrapped (I could probably make half a dozen daily, just with what I clean up off the floor at my local Michaels).
Barring that, grab yourself some modeling putty and start mucking around with it. It can be daunting for the novice, but all you need to get over the initial hump is to work with the material, a bit. After that, as long as you keep things simple, it shouldn't be hard to make something passable, which a decent paintjob will invariably improve.

Giant bride Kan holding an ork in a tuxedo.
Might be offensive to the bride though, but its what stood out as humorous to me.
Maybe reverse it to suit the relationship's dominance roles?
Beyond that, maybe you two could be oiler grots, fixing up the Kan that allegorically resembles the marriage? Or a house?

I also got permission to put grot tanks in various spots on the cake.
Now I have to find a good tutorial for building them so I don't have to pay over $100 USD to get some from Forge World.

You could always register at forgeworld...
I would do papercraft for those. Resin or otherwise will be more detailed and real, but weigh too much for cake to support.

Grot tanks out of plasticard shouldn't be too tricky (and certainly won't weigh all that much). They're small, generally with stubby, blocky proportions that lend themselves to relatively simple shapes. Getting some flavorful texture and a few key details onto the surface is more important than the underlying structure, which needn't necessarily be much more complex than a pair of boxes and a tube.

grots/goblins would make great "flower girls".
I'm not so keen on the idea of grot tanks all around, as they're much the same size as kanz and so will detract attention from the important two figures. Thinking laterally though, making some sort of platform for the happy couple might be a good idea - could be a vehicle, a building, or a ring of kanz holding the couple on their shoulders.

Kan painted rough black with a top hat and another painted rough white holding a bouquet. Marble cake is suitably Orky, looking somewhat like a patch job after you cut it. Then I suppose fondant could be used to give it a sort of cobbled appearence like a stompa. I guess if you're going for the traditional shape you could make the pillars look cobbled as well a touch. No need to go overboard with too many decorations.

Well, first of all congratulations to you good sir.
Secondly, you should make two Killa Kans standing next to each other and a gretchin with a tuxedo pops out of one,
and the grot with the wedding dress out of the other
I could actually see that as a really creative and good idea.

Sweet Jesus, Nurgle and Slaanesh in the same box!?
No, just Nurgle and Slaanesh, Jesus will be sold seperately in a blister.

What about painting up Ghazghkull Thraka to look like your mother in law as a decoration?
or, from the Warhammer Fantasy range, some Night Goblin Fanatics. You know that nickname for the Ms. - the old ball and chain?
You could also put the Kanz in a Battlewagon with some Grots hanging from the back, and "Juz Mahwaaaghd" or some other Orky saying on it.

Or you could put wazzdakka on top of your cake to remind you that having a motorcycle is no longer in your future.

Im thinking your wedding cake might be a bit top-heavy... you might want to weigh down the base...
BTW congrats....
