Hi folks.

Playing a heavy mech, sit-back-n-shoot IG army on wednesday. 1500pts, and I'm using a footsloggin ork list basically made up of 70+ slugga boyz, 10 nobz, 8 lootaz, 3 individual deffkoptas, warboss, & big mek w/ SAG. PKs all around.

Pie-plates all around, that even if they scatter are still gonna damage me pretty bad!

Any tactics, sneekly lil tips, foxy lil plans that you guys n' gals (any here?) have used that might help me out?

Cheers!

Well most players will tell you to swap your SAG for a KFF. While a SAG can be fun, it can do diddly squat at times while a KFF will almost always be there for you. Especially against all that shooting

yea - im hearing from lots of places that i need a kff - I just find the sag more orky n' fun.

Lets assume for now that I can't change the list - what tactics would you use with what I've got?

wow .. a foot slugging ork army Vs a leafblower IG parking lot, you cannot get worse match-up ;(

Quite difficult to get a nice tactic with a little bit more than the AOBR units ;(

Experienced player will give you better advice for sure, but here is what i will suggest :
Spread your army as much as possible, so only a handful of orks will die when a large blast hits you.
Try to get in contact as fast as possible - but even then, beware the flamers.

Add buzzaw to your koptas, scout and shoot/charge turn 1
( note: if possible, charge/shoot the IG vehicules on the flank, not on the frontline. Because if you destroy the frontline vehicules, then your foot-slugging boyz will probably have to move 1 more turn before reaching the enemy lines)

Maybe you can proxy / "pretend" the Warrboss as being the Mad Doc ? ( if your friend is OK with it).
Then you will be able to give some more protection to your cyborg troops !
(you don't change the models, but you change the list...)

There is, honestly, probably not much you can do without changing your list. Even with a 4+ cover save from hugging terrain on most units you will probably lose too many models per turn, and have too much trouble popping tanks to really defeat a good IG mech list (what I consider to be the best army in the game).

IG have so much ranged firepower that all they have to do is fire at you while they wait for you to arrive, and then flame you when you get there. Chimeras with multi-lasers and heavy flamers love fighting Ork hordes.

Works like so:

Imagine a bull...

There is the head and the loins, and the head makes a feint forward. After testing the line, the head splits into the horns, as the ensuing army is thrust into the loins, encircled. While at high risk of being costly, it is about your weight. You have to manipulate the sight lines and terrain to maximize your striking distance. Maybe play your warboss as a count's as Ghazghkull for the super waaagh.

Do or do not, there is no try.

Agree, your list is most of the problem, most notably the missing KFF. Yes, it is boring and maybe unorky, but 100% mandatory. It is the single reason orks can compete with armies like space wolves, imperial guard or necrons. If you willingly skip it, don't be surprised that you get hammered by those extremely good shooty armies. Nothing you can do about that.

The second thing is nobz on foot. The die really easy to S8 and up, especially blasts. I think I don't have to tell you that the imperial guard is master of S8+ large blasts.

Besides that, you are not fielding any heavy support, which one of our strongest slots. Kanz, Battlewagons, Big Gunz or Looted Wagons are all viable choices for your army. Get some!

Last thing is, spread out. With practice you will learn to spread out your orks well enough that small blasts and templates are starting to not look scary at all, and large blasts will only cause a couple of casualties. In combination with the KFF, this could mean three casualties from a LRBT direct hit, rather than twelve or so.

7 Ork facts people always get wrong:
Ragnar did not win against Thrakka, but suffered two crushing defeats within a few days of each other.
A lasgun is powerful enough to sever an ork's appendage or head in a single, well aimed shot.
Orks meks have a better understanding of electrics and mechanics than most Tech Priests.
Orks actually do not think that purple makes them harder to see. The joke was made canon by Alex Stewart's Caphias Cain books.
Gharkull Blackfang did not even come close to killing the emperor.
Orks can be corrupted by chaos, but few of them have any interest in what chaos offers.
Orks do not have the power of believe.

If you dont get first turn, hold the koptas in reserve & try to outflank with them for some vehicle killing goodness.

Your lootas want to stay in area terrain for cover if at all possible, but be positioned for potential side armour shots.

Your priority is getting into combat. As people have said, it's a bad match up & lack of KFF will potentially be your undoing, but that said, 70 slugga boyz is a lot. Manouvre so his chimeras wont be able to flame you before you assault. It's a long shot but if you can swamp his deployment area with boyz & nobz youll at least be in with a chance of doing some damage.

Don't forget your mobs are fearless with 11 or more models, so you arent subject to pinning from artillery.

Hey folks.

Thanks for all your advice! I used most of it and did the better for it!

He won; 7 to 6 kill points. He wasn't as much mech as I thought but did have 2 leman russ, a vendetta, and a manticore ... all but the latter of which I destroyed or immobilised.

He also had three sentinels which were either wreaked or weapon destroyed by the end. Other than that I killed a squad & half of dudes with silly heavy weapons & all of yarrick's body guard. Killed yarrick too at one point - but of course he jumped right back up - bless im. He knocked off 90% of my boyz, most of my nobz, and all the deffkoptas.

PKs and Buzzsaws were the best things in my list. I needed a way to get to the enemy quicker / with less injury - so bigger boyz squads or transport next time.

KFF would have been good s the SAG did squat.

Cheers for all the help!
