So hi everyone, I'm seeking to start an army (while waiting for the next CSM codex), and I was unsure about which to start (using mostly battleforce box and 1 hq to start lightly).
For now, the armies that interest me would be SM, BA, GK or Orks.
I kinda like strong melee armies but also ones that are capable of being useful all-around.
SM seems to be the way to go, but are they capable of keeping up with the other MEQ ?
Blood Angels seem interesting.
GK to be honest would be my last choice because they seem really really OP in my opinion, and I enjoy challenge.
I'd would kinda like not having to see my army rules be all changed and my models becoming obselete during 6th ed, so I guess maybe Orks should also be one of my last choices.
So my guess is it's between SM and BA.
Some people told me not to worry about choosing SM even if it was clear they will have a new Codex in 6th ed because their models usefulness tend to stay the same between each edition.
BA seems fun, but of course, I'm searching the best option for a beginner, and many people religiously and repeatdly told me that SM was the way to go. What do you think of it ?

I would suggest saving your money til the new dex is out or at least adding to you current one. If you're dead set on starting a new melee bases army go with Blood Angels.

If you just want another choppy MEQ army (unless SM doesn't stand for Space Marines?), then I'd hold off until the new 'dex comes out, and/or just add to your current CSM army.

Ever considered Daemons?!

Best battleforce value overall, (you can make HQ's out of the box), rumors abound that CSM's could be getting better daemonic supporters in the new 'dex, it's another choppy army and best of all, you'd be building two armies at once!

Otherwise, I'd say BA's if you're looking for choppy as you can build a speedy jump pack army with FnP/furious charge bubbles.

i absolutley hate BA i honestly just hate the fluff. the models. the charecters just everything. Save your money for your chaos when it comes out. if you are set on getting a melee army that has potential for all around i would go for BT but thats just my biased opinion against BA

Well, why not just start an old CSM army? Unless you don't wanna spring for an extra codex. CSM are still very playable, and versatile, unless you are going for high end tournaments.

Otherwise, mostly for conversion reasons, I'd suggest SMs, are they are incredibly easy to convert to CSM in the future, and dont really have many army specific units like SWs. They do tend to be more shooty than stabby though, and you wont be able to easly convert their best unit, TH/SS terminators to chaos.

BA would work if you avoid characters/Sanguanry Guard/ Chaplans, but they you lose some of your better options. Stay away from GK though, even their PA troops cant be easily converted to chaos due to their different guns/power weapons. You can convert their terminators into chaos termies, but even then it will look like you went Chaos GKs, which will get a lot of flack from fluff purists.

Generally I would suggest you either go CSM, or SM. If you go SM, consider splitting an AoBR set with someone, or Ebay. It's extremely cheap, and gives you a whole lot of generic marines that you can convert to anything.

Start building up your CSm now.

I would guess that the core units will still be at least viable in the next codex (marines, 'Blitz etc).

In terms of HW make a Lord model that you can conceivably "count as" later in life (example: i often "count as" my twin claws lord as a lord with Khorne dameon weapon instead)

GK can make some nasty CC lists, generally have low model count so there's less to buy and paint(and they look awesome when finished), and tend to be "steamroll-ish". The don't have a battleforce box but to get a small force going you'll spend equal to or less than the cost of a battleforce I think.
