Nokia has developed a tattoo that vibrates when you get an incoming call/text. I hope transhumanism has more up its sleeve than this. While interesting from a technical standpoint, I have to imagine having a pemanent buzzer on your hip, or lower back for the ladies, would get tiring.

We have winner folks!

Hmmmm. I wonder if there will be any long term health issues from these. Microwaves are a low energy radiation with pretty much no ionising effect, but they cause water molecules to vibrate. The effect of that vibration on tissue is poorly understood. I doubt phone use or ownership is particularly dangerous (though extended use could heat tissue in an area slightly), but integrating something like that directly into your skin could have some odd effects in the long term...

Having re-read the article it seems that the ink is to be demagnetised by high temperatures, so no 'splodey MRI fun

Microwaves only cause water molecules to "vibrate" heating them up if they're at 2.45 GHz. At any other frequency, microwaves don't do much of anything to water. (That's why your microwave oven uses that frequency, and your cell phone doesn't.)

And, the effect of microwaves on tissue is very well understood. They do nothing.

There have been doctors (MD) who have come out and said cell phones can be damaging, but study after study and scientist after scientist have shown that this is just fear-mongering and a lack of understanding from doctors.

The dielectric heating effect of microwaves is not limited to 2.45GHz, though that is a fairly optimal frequency. Microwaves and cell phones use different frequencies to prevent interference, I believe. That and a cell phone's purpose is not to heat things.

There is a measurable heating effect on tissue with cell phone use, whether that is a problem (It's less than a similar exposure to direct sunlight, for example) is something that really does require further investigation. I think it's likely that it's not carcinogenic, but I am loath to speak with any certainty about it being totally safe. Also, there have been more than MD's coming out and saying more research is needed, some pretty heavy duty biophysicists have said the same. The effect of long term localised heating, even on a small scale, is not something that we can be completely certain about the effects of and to date no study has been going on long enough for us to be definitive.

Note, I am not saying phones are dangerous- I think they are likely safe. I am just curious as to the possibility they may be harmful, and whether embedding the reciever in the surface of your skin would increase that potential for harm.

I carried a pager one or two evenings a week at a job years ago. After a while the vibration on my hip became really bothersome, and I developed a twitch in reaction to it. I changed which pocket I carried it in, and made a point of taking it out of my pocket when I was stationary, but I still occasionally felt a twitch or tingle. I kind of like this idea, but I'd be leery of having that vibration at one fixed location.

Was it work only pager?

I know I sort of cringe when my work phone goes off, so maybe it was just a subtle hint of dread?

It was a work-only pager. I was working at a homeless hotline/after-hours child abuse reporting/social services I&R line. It was a real physical twinge, but it may well have been at least partially psychosomatic. Some of those calls sucked, especially at night.

My last four phones were nokias and they all worked fine (my next phone will also be a nokia).

Not so the Ericsson and Motorola phones prior to this.

Unlike the no end of issues my family and friends have with Huawei, HTC and iPhoNey.

Yeah this is pretty common in the people I know who constantly message people on their phone, it's really strange.

Yeah i get it a lot...
I keep my phone in the same pocket and it's always on vibrate so every now and again i get a buzzing in my leg despite the fact i haven't got my phone on me...
