This blog will show my first army as it grows.
The army type is Imperial Guard Cadians with the hostile environments mod from Forgeworld.
But even though they look like Cadians, I've decided that they come from <some yet unknown planet>. If you have a suggestion for a home planet please let me know!
***Edit 12.04.12 -- They are now the 112th Velesian Vipers!***
I'm a painting/modeling/blogging noob, so any comments are very welcome.
I'm not sure how good the pictures will be since my equipment is kinda crap (mobile phone camera).
***Edit 30.03.12 -- I have got a real camera now, will update all pictures***
Anyway, here we go!

To be completed next:
  • Storm Trooper Squad w/ 2x Melta Guns - 105 pts

  • Currently completed:
  • 28.04.2012 SWS w/ 2x Flamers & Demo Charge - 65 pts

  • 16.04.2012 Ratling Squad - 50 pts

  • 12.04.2012 Infantry Squad w/ Plasma Gun & Lascannon - 85 pts

  • 30.03.2012 Infantry Squad w/ Plasma Gun & Lascannon, Sergeant w/ Melta Bomb - 90 pts

  • 24.03.2012 Platoon Command Squad w/ 4 Melta Guns - 70 pts

  • 21.03.2012 Penal Legion Squad - 80 pts

  • Total: 440 pts

    Here is my Penal Legion Squad:

    "Forward, dogs!"

    Even though the Penal Custodian can detonate the Legionnaires' explosive collars to raise morale, he also likes to whip them, because why not

    Penal Legionnaire. Image the evil crimes he has commited against the Emperor, tsk tsk tsk. I tried to green stuff explosive collars on them, but it kinda sucked since I didn't know what I was doing.

    hey Dicewar,

    welcome to Dakka. The IG are some of the most flexiable and characterist races within the game. Alot of the fluff can be gotten from anything from Greco-Roman times to Modern day. Just figure out a key ideal you have and run with it. Sometimes the army comes before the ideas and thats ok too.

    Your IG are looking pretty good. From what i can tell of the shots they dont look too bad at all. the SL models are some of the coolest out there and as penals would make some find Salvar Chem dogs.

    I'll be looking forward to the rest of your work

    Not too shabby for your first army! I like the addition of the whip, certainly gives it a more fluffy weapon. Looking forward to more of your stuff.

    Thanks for al the kind words guys

    @swampyturtle: Salvar Chem Dogs are great. Love that name.

    @Dr. Temujin: Thanks man.

    @Korporal Killytoof: I just searched eBay for "Warhammer whip", I think. You can find anything you want that way, buddy. This is the one i bought: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Tomb-King-Charioteer-Whip-and-Arm-/230752055998?pt=UK_Toys_Wargames_RL&hash=item35b9e4f2be#ht_824wt_1037

    Finished my platoon command squad. These guys were DIFFICULT to paint, puh! So many details and so many annoying crevices
    These guys are pretty vanilla. But, I promise there will be more fun troops, weapons and tanks in the future!
    Next to be painted is infantry squad w/ plasma gun and laser cannon. (a little boring, I know)

    I also have a Chimera, but i don't know if I should use orange or blue as the main color for tanks. What do you think I should do?

    Here is my Platoon Command Squad:

    The whole PCS ready to melt something.

    Platoon Commander. I magnetized his arms just for the hell of it

    Melta Guardsman. Watch out, tanks!

    Hey that's some ace painting! The command squad is a little bright for my taste, but they will be a pretty big contrast to the prisoners.

    Looking awesome, I don't think the orange should be used on the tanks I would just stick with the main armour colour for that.

    I agree with (Two Spartan) the orange is a little to bright but overall painting is great keep it up.

    Wow man, nice. I don't think those Steel Legion guys lend themselves well to your painting, probably because they're older models, but they still look good!

    @Two Spartan & Paranoia_Agent:
    I can understand that you think the color scheme is too bright.
    Believe it or not the color scheme was originally meant to be camouflage colors for a planet/moon that looks like Mars or the Moon. They are mostly brown/red/orange with dark blue patches/stones.
    But, I'm a noob so I kinda picked the wrong color pots from the start. Then I just figured I'd go with it and make them really bright instead. After all, they're shock troops, right. And being the Imperial Guard they're probably only (fluff-wise) gonna fight when they outnumber the enemy 100:1 so they don't need to (or can't) hide anyway
    I'll probably go with blue for the tanks as you suggest.

    @Korpral Killytoof:
    Thanks

    @Samus_aran115:
    Maybe you're right, but the normal infantry will be Cadian Shock Troops with the hostile environments mod from Forgeworld. Only the penal legionnaires are Steel Legion

    @worldwarme:
    Thanks, too kind

    I finished my first infantry squad. I tried painting all the parts separately before assembling them. Big mistake! When I tried to assemble them after painting them, nothing fit! So I basically scratched off so much paint when trying to jam the arms and torsos etc together that I had to paint them again!
    Here is a video that shows approximately how the assembly of these troops went for me : Youtube
    Here they are:

    The Infantry Squad in all its glory.

    Heavy Weapons Team with Laser Cannon. They seriously need to fire their industrial painters, look at that shambles

    Plasma Gun Guardsman. He's cheap and he kills Terminators, what's not to like?

    Sergeant with magnetized Melta Bomb and some kinda semi-fancy close combat weapon.

    I use this kit for conversion of normal Guardsmen: Hostile Environments Troops Conversion Set

    Great job! I was gonna use those FW upgrades for my stormtroopers. Nice to see them painted up.

    I like the color scheme. I had a similar idea with mine (being from like an orange planet). I use orange, yellow, and brown. They are bright, but you will never misplace a model!

    If you want to see what a vehicle looks painted orange, I have a valkyrie and a basecoated baneblade in my blog, link is in the sig.

    I'm not normally a fan of going for the slightly unusual colour schemes as personally I prefer to remain unseen to the enemy. You on the other hand have really made this work, the very simple highlights on the edges of the armour make it stand out so well against the rest!

    Just like I have said on another blog I cant wait to see what your armour looks like next to a squad, for me that is the make or break of the look of the army.

    Good work well done, ill be watching

    I promised a Chimera. But, I did another infantry squad instead. I have actually forgot why I did that... I'm sure I had a good reason

    @ghostmaker: Thanks, I will!

    @sparkywtf: When I saw your Valkyrie painted orange I immediately wanted to do orange tanks.
    But, we'll see, I haven't decided yet.

    @IG10000: Shock troops don't need camouflage, hehe
    At least it will be very obvious to see who actually uses camouflage, like my ratlings for example!

    @Flinty: Thanks. You'll have to wait a little longer for the Chimera I'm afraid.

    @MrMerlin: Thanks, buddy.

    So, here is my second and final infantry squad.
    I found some fantastic snake decals on http://www.3vwargames.co.uk/. So now they are the 112th Velesian Vipers (Veles because that's some ancient slavic underworld snake god according to wikipedia. 112th because then I can use the CXXII decals that come with Cadian boxes.)
    I'm gonna sand down the shoulders on the previous infantry squad and give them the same decals later.
    The only problem with these decals is that they look so good that they make my painting look like crap, haha!

    Rawr.

    Snake decals, wooo!

    The sergeant has a fleur de lys marking on his right shoulder, which is this army's rank system thing. (I have decals with more than one fleur de lys for higher officers.)
    Also, killin' scythe. Fer killin'.

    I tried to pose the HWT like they were troubleshooting their lascannon. "Have you tried turning it off and on again?"
    The gunner has augmented his helmet with a servo-skull aiming aid. He's still only BS3, but without the servo-skull he's BS1, so I hope the superglue holds!

    Next to be painted is 5 ratlings, I hope those will be awesome since I'm not using the ratling models, but making some special ratlings of my own. So stay tuned!

    @swampyturtle & BloodGenisis: Thanks, nice to see you are still following

    So, here is some abhuman support for my brightly colored gang; Ratlings. It is my first real conversion and I'm not too happy with the result, but it was a good learning experience! My next conversions will be better
    Basically I took some Skaven Plague Monks and gave them SM Scout Sniper Rifles, Laspistols, Kromlech heads, Tau Fire Warrior backpacks and a home-made tube between the head and backpack.
    And these are camouflaged, since they have +1 to cover saves.
    They are posed like they are sneaking around in some rubble and ruins, I guess.

    My next task is to remake the shoulder pads for my first Infantry Squad and PCS, and rebase the PCS.
    After that I think I'll make another Penal Legion Squad.

    Man Alive! This is impressive stuff, your ratlings look amazing - and your colour scheme is well executed and a great combination. Can't get past those Ratling snipers man, they're some classy abhuman freaks Not a huge fan of the twin-linked chainsword but I admire your inventiveness - you can almost imagine the story associated with these guys from the models alone, the biggest thing that springs to mind is Chemical Wastes since their suits have that hazardous materials vibe. Can't wait to see more. And don't stop at just two infantry squads!

    @Scrazza: ty

    @MrMerlin: Hehe, how those guys got past the Ordo Xenos I don't know!
    It's just some small things that I noticed when I was done that made me go "ooooh, of course!" and then facepalm. I'm not too worried though, I like them.

    @nightside: Thanks! The chainsword is mostly for show, we all know that guy is never gonna get to kill anything with it, ever.
    Chemical wastes are no hindrance for these guys. But, too be honest I don't understand how any guardsman can be sent into combat without breathing apparatus.
    I don't think Chaos, Orks or Tyranids follow the Geneva convention with regards to chemical weapons

    I'm missing some backpacks for my next Penal Legion squad, so I made a SWS instead. It has 2 flamers and a demo charge. The demo charge is made from some parts of a vox backpack, an autocannon ammo thing and a couple of other small parts.
    I tested some clear bases on them, what do you think? I might do my whole army with clear bases.
