Video Of 'Berserk Dog' Shows Officers Mauled
Sky News – 20 minutes agoRelated ContentView PhotoVideo Of 'Berserk Dog' Shows Officers Mauled
Graphic footage has emerged showing the moment at least five police officers were injured after being attacked by a dog in east London.

The officers were attacked by the pitbull-type animal as they tried to arrest a man in Newham, police said.

The footage shows the dog leaping at officers as they attempt to beat it off.

Four of the officers were reportedly seriously injured in the incident, but are now in a stable condition in hospital.

Sky's crime correspondent Martin Brunt said the dog had "gone berserk," adding that the officers had "suffered leg and arm bites".

Brunt said: "They are not life-threatening injuries I am told, but two of them are probably going to need to have to have skin grafts."

Pools of blood were visible near the entrance to the property in Albert Square.

Firearms officers and the dog squad were called in to contain the animal, which was shot dead.

A man in his 20s, who is believed to be the owner of the dog, has been arrested for grievous bodily harm and kidnapping.

Police had been at the property as part of an operation to hunt wanted suspects or people who had failed to attend court.

A total of 1,619 "visits" were made across London, Scotland Yard said.

:: Dog bite incidents in the UK have risen 79% in London and 43% nationally in recent years, according to figures from the Kennel Club.

They have pitbulls in the UK? I thought the Bulldog Consortium effectively kept them out under the umbrella of nationalism and canine pride.

Actually pit bulls originated in Britain. The US version is just biggie sized. Then there are labrador/pit bull mixes that are huge, but also pretty much just water crazed labradors, with spots.

Probably a Staffy or there's another godawful ugly dog that looks like an A. Pitbull terrier with severe doggy downs but the name escapes me, also from Britain though.

Ooops found it...the bull terrier

I'm not sure why they were trying to beat the dog off. That probably enraged it further.

Seriously though, this just highlights why scumbags like this keep these dogs.

They don't care for them or particularly like them, they're just there to hurt people.

Should be considered a dangerous weapon.

I wonder if his failed court appearance was to do with kidnapping... unless there is another explanation.

They don't even carry knives, a taser, or some kind of pepper spray?

I've always wondered how hard it would be to strangle a pitbull that was attacking you. They have massive necks.

Pretty hard if your arms are off at the elbows and hanging out of the sides of it's mouth.

Damn, so many exalts in one post....

While being arrested, i would declare i've never seen that dog before and suggest the officers probably were a bit sloppy at lunch.

Soon enough, the English Pitbull will be extinct... Which is a shame, lovely dogs unless they're mistreated.

Its breed shouldn't be allowed to exist if it has such a monumental capacity for damage like in this case.

The German Shepard has a more powerful bite, and is responsible for more attacks IIRC... Should they be allowed to exist?

I didn't know that some officers in the UK don't carry guns.

To my American brain that is a truly alien concept.

I mean we had two police officers who would roam the hallways of my high school and they carried 2 firearms each (plus tazers, stun guns, pepper spray, handcuffs, and an assortment of various bludgeoning devices)

German Shepards have uses in the police force and aren't really as insane as Pitbulls.

I have lived with a pitbull. He was the best dog we ever had. Just like any other dog, they turn rotten if they get treat badly. The issue is the abuse of the breed, not the breed itself.

Anecdotal evidence is not really going to stand up considering to not how many attacks the breed has, but the severity of the mauling it gives. I really doubt every single case is a result of abuse.

In the words of Caesar Milan: "Animal, Dog, Breed."

Primarily, a pitbull is an animal. Secondly, it is a dog. Finally, it is a specific breed. A pitbull, if trained as well as any other dog, will behave how it was trained to.

Are you saying the breed is as peaceful as a Saint Bernard?

If trained correctly, and it's natural aggressiveness is corrected then yes. It's when an owner does not train the dog properly and give it "balance" that these things happen.

The bold part is the dodgy bit. I can make the same argument about a tiger, or wolverine.

Life does not cease to be funny when people die any more than it ceases to be serious when people laugh.

Those aren't pack animals. Nor are they domesticated.

Dog training works because you put yourself about the dog in the pack. Tigers have no pack, so you aren't above them and they won't obey you.

By some police officers you mean "most," a relatively tiny number of bobbies carry firearms on a regular basis. The ones that do are often ridiculously OVERarmed compared to thier American counterparts. But I suppose if Firearms Officers are exceptional, then it's best not to go half way.
