I'm in the market for a side force, and I'm thinking of going with a Draigowing. It's cheap, it plays to my liking for small, elite armies, and, did I mention, it's cheap. Problem is, I hate Grey Knights fluff, so they're definitely not going to be Grey Knights.

I do, however, like Black Templars quite a bit. I'm not suggesting I'm going to run Draigowing as Black Templars, but probably a DIY chapter that's rather similar to the Templars in outlook, organization, and purpose. It's hard to resist those Forge World BT kits.

So, what I need help with is figuring out how to counts-as all the GK crap into stuff that wouldn't be solely accessible to Grey Knights. The Preferred Enemy: Daemons I can make peace with just by having the chapter come from a world that's faced daemonic incursion before, but stuff like psybolt ammo and the like is considerably more difficult. Any suggestions?

Just paint your GK like black templars.. It's your army and you could paint it fluorescent pink if you wanted Also nice to see a fellow BT lover!

Yeah, I won't be painting GKs like BTs. BTs are fiercely anti-psyker. What I'll be doing is making a do-it-yourself chapter similar in approach and purpose to the Black Templars that uses the Grey Knights' rules.

So I need explanations for crap like Sanctuary, Stormravens, Psychic Communion, etc.

I don't remember if there is any leeway in creating GK successors, but you could come up with an off-shoot GK chapter that is fleet based and operates near the Eye of Terror or the Maelstrom.

How about you actually use the BT rules and run a terminator heavy BT list? Then you do not have to muck around with fluff explanations for why the chapter that hates psykers the most, is fielding an army of all psykers.

The basics of the list are you get 5 sets of 5 terminators, and each set has 2x heavy weapons with Tank Hunters. That is 4 S9 shots or 8 S7 rending shots against tanks. Against infantry you get a ton of storm bolters, assault cannons, or frag missiles.

Once the enemy gets close, you have Re-rolls to hit with a ton of PF to finish anything off.

Plus you Marshal will have 3 attacks base +1 for Terminator Honors, +1 for 2x Lighting claws, +1 on the charge for a total of 5 or 6 attacks with re-roll to hit AND re-roll to wound. on top of that he gies you LD 10 on everything on the board.

You can then add in crusader squads, typhoon speeds, or vindicators/predators (with PotMS) as you are so inclined.

The model count will still be low, and you can run it without any vehicles if you so desire

Here is an outline of what the list could look like.

HQ- Marshal in TDA your choice of PW/SS for cheap durability, OR 2x LC for a huge amount of attacks with re-rolls on everything
Terminator Command Squad 3-4 dudes, if you go LC on the marshal I would take 2x assault cannons as you will be closing with the enemy, 2x TML if you just want the unit to shoot, add a chainfist if you want to. Always take Tank Hunters

HQ- Champion in Accept any Chalange.

Elite- 5 terminators with 2x TML and tank hunters, maybe add a chainfist.

Troops- either small LAS/PLAS crusader squads to sit and shoot, or a larger unit (maybe with the campion) to run up behind the terminators for cover.
Drop pods might also be an option as they are cheap, and can fire the deathwind launcher the turn they land, and can hide you few/small scoring units until the end of the game when you need them to take objectives while your terminators do the killing.

Fast- Land Speeder Typhoons- Super cheap fast missiles

Heavy- Vindicators with PotMS and EA. Ignore shaken and stunned, and can move 12" and shoot.

Heavy- Auto-Las predators with PotMS and EA. Can fire at 2 targets and can move 6" and fire 2/3 guns at 2 targets, or move 12" and still shoot one gun.

Again, I'm not actually trying to make a BT list. I'm trying to make a Draigowing list, I just hate Draigo's fluff and anything in the same book as it.

Templars are great, but they're best run as a fairly sprawling combined arms force. A Draigowing's sixteen dudes. That's pretty kickass.

Grey Knights would make a better "counts as" for something like Thousands Suns (all psykers) or maybe even Blood Ravens (from the Dawn or War games, don't they have an above average number of psykers?).

The issue is that Black Templars Specifically HATE psykers. None in their chapter, and they will not even fight with other imperial armies that have psykers in them. A draigo wing army is ALL psykers.

To be honest, you could simply count them as "movie marines" for almost any chapter you want...as long as that chapter has some psykers in it.

Why not try out a Loganwing instead?

Don't have to come up with explanations for everything and you can still have like a 20 model army! Plus you get the added bonus of more chaplains, (a 'must-have' for those zealous crusading types!), Lone Wolves = Paladins, and for the 'A Song of Ice & Fire' fan who wouldn't want Direwolf Cavalry?!

The re-naming of the various equipment is much easier to boot. If you're going for the Templar/Crusading theme, then names like;
a) Wolftooth Necklace = Honour-Duel Scars/Champion's Honours/Blademaster

b) Wolftail Talisman = Purity Seals/Litanies of Warding/Mark of the Virtuous

c) Frostblade/axe = Power Glaive or Bastard Sword/Anointed Blade

And rules like counter-attack? Well Templars can take that as an option on their veteran squads! Acute senses can simply be changed to Auto-senses.

Much simpler way of re-working a codex while still maintaining the small, elite feel. Consider your list could be;
HQ: Logan obviously a 'must'. Can also make use of Wolf Lord/Battle Leader and Wolf Priest.
Elites: Lone Wolves
Troops: Wolfguard all upgraded to termies with all kinds of unique & highly individual options.
Fast: (Dire)Wolf Cav.
Heavy: Your tanks of choice.

I've seen Loganwing done with barely 20 some models at around the 1850pts mark myself. The cost of those termie upgrades really adds up fast!
