Err, how is he taking 3 thundertusks? Rare choices are limited to 2 identical units in the average size game. Stonehorns are the only one you can take 3 of (2 rare, 1 as a hunter mount).

You should be glad he's taking a moderatly poor unit.
3 Thundertusks are a horrible waste of Rare points. Ironblasters are FAR superior.
1 Thundertusk is an ok support unit for a block or 2 of Bulls with its ASL aura. Otherwise it usually dies to cannons or just CC attacks.

Not everyone likes Ironblasters. Though they are very nice for hitting that enemy wizard.
But to put it simply about ogres. They are strong, one of the stronger core units in the game. You also don't want to let them get the charge either as they all get impact hits on the charge, most of their units have fear as well. They also have 3 attacks base and are monstrous infantry, thus giving them stomp attacks against infantry, they are low initiative, so they won't usually hit before you. You also have to remember ogres are very fast despite being huge and fat, they move only 1 less than a standard un-barded horse!
Their other core unit is the Ironguts, which is a stronger bull, they don't care about initiative so they have GW's, meaning they'll be hitting you with 3 strength 6 attacks once you attack.
The Slaughter master is one of the very few combat wizards in game, able to take armor, his spell signature regenerates wounds for him, and his spells buff up ogres to a painful degree. And with a certain magical item can cast spells that if they hurt wizards, they would lose wizard levels and a random spell each time.
Tyrant is a powerful Combat Monster, one of the few still effective as a combat general.
Mournfang hurt you, try not to let em flank you, and by hurt you, I mean if you allow them they will seriously you up.
The heroes are good as well, bruisers are good at being minor combat monsters, butchers are standard level 1-2 mages. Fire bellies are something to look out for, with their fire breath attack, all flaming attacks, and even its impact hits are flaming!
Gnoblars are distracting annoying things, not really strong but they are very good at being sacrificial units.
The main ranged unit Ironbelchers are good as well, shooting D6 per turn with no penalties for moving and shooting or multiple shots, with S4 strength and Armour Piercing, and of course still being a monster in melee
Maneaters, Don't let the name fool you, they'll eat everyone. They are very dangerous and perhaps the most customizable unit in the dex, being able to take from 8 USR's, and being a standard S5 instead of 4. Not to mention they can even customize each one individually, Alternate hand weapons in the front, great weapons in the back? It can happen. Double Pistol shots with sniper and poisoned, pray for your general and mages. Stubborn and Scout, they'll be in your face before you even know it.
Ironblasters are one of those things everyone wishes they have, but ogres got it so them . They are our artillery, being both a movable cannon and chariot mix, they are very powerful, very durable (unless of course the artillery dice hates you, per usual)
Our monsters are at least average, and pretty useful with their special rules.

I think we can offer a general 'how to beat ogres with massed Thundertusks' . But we will help best when we know your army.
I suspect its not Empire or Dwarfs or the answer to massed Thundertusks would be easy enough. Cannon.
1. Can you take bolt throwers? At a fair price (i.e not elves)? If so take many, gobbos can have up to twelve! You want be able to do a mobile defense however then, warcmachines tie you down, so if you cannot take a lot wirthout breaking the bank dont bother at all.
2. How cheap can you do archery? S3 bows against something like Thundertusks can be suprisingly efficient. You will be wounding most worthwhile stuff on 6+ anyway. Night goblin archers, Bret peasants and Dark Elf crossbows and Waywatchers have a chance, you will need to get out of the way and attack from the flank. Its not a quick fix either, you will need to play a denial game. This ogre army is going to be small so you should be able to provide more targets than they can engage. With enough denial and redirect you can whittle down key units with concentrated fire.
3. I wouldnt rely on magic unless if demands a save or die effect or is S5 or better. Even then it will need to combine with missile fire.
If you dont have the shooting or ther magic then you are left with high S, probably great weapon armed troops or monsters of your own.
In any event exploit your (hopefully) superior numbers to flank and gank.

Ogres also tend to use a huge block to use up their Core requirements. Something like 12-18 Ironguts. This is a unit you really cannot fight from the front with anything. You will need to slow it down and restrict it with chaff units. Depending on how much chaff you own, you can either keep them from the fight indefinitely, or slow them enough to get some proper flankers in there. Something which can strip ranks and break them in one sitting.
Also Death magic works very well. Just don't let your wizard anywhere near his Butchers until you can cast it, because he can Hellheart you.

I wouldn't say "tend to use a big block of ogres"
Only a Gutstar list really uses that and its only a small portion of the actual Ogre lists.
There are three types of lists. Gutstar, Bullstar, and MMU(Ironguts or Bulls)
Deathstar lists aren't the strongest out there. Far too easy to redirect and make useless, and a single spell can demolish the unit(although they usually have the Runemaw)
MMU(Multiple Medium Units) is far more common and is the more dangerous list. It tends to have 2-4 units of 9-12 Ironguts or Bulls depending on the point level and personal preference.

Normally a "big block of ogres" means 16-18 ogre bulls, inclusive of characters in three ranks of six. Its not really a 'star' unit. Sure its big but its a regular horde using optimum rear ranks. If anything its a minimum to have a workable horde
It only trult becomes a 'star' if you use Ironguts as above or you go for about 24, or more having extra ogres just for unit size.

Remember that the characters are what makes the Bullhorde scary. Kitted out defensivly, Ogre characters can be VERY hard to kill. Slaughtermasters can heal themselves, are T5, and can have good armor and ward saves. Same for Tyrants and Bruisers minus the healing bit.
The characters severly reduce the enemie's combat resolution while the Ogres behind them just keep grinding.
If you can kill the Ogre characters then the threat drops by quite abit. Now you can deal damage to the actual ogres.

Sorry, I play Vampire Counts. I use a few blocks of Skeletons backed up by Heinrich Kemmler, and on another fland several hordes of zombies backed up by necromancers on Corpse Carts. I also have two Terrorgheists, a unit of grave guard, black knights and hexwraiths.

VC, or indeed any undead, have a tough matchup against Ogres because they can easily cut through your chaff. a unit of Mournfangs can easily delete a 40 strong unit of Skeletons/zombies when they charge.
Terrorghiests are a good counter for Ogres because of relativly low Ld all around. The basic unit is Ld7. IDK if you are allowed to use the General's Ld for the scream? If so then they will typically be Ld9(SM is 8 plus Standard of Discipline)
He will bring Ironblasters and they will take out your Corpse Carts fairly handily(although he should target the Terrorghiests first)

I am a Tomb Kings player and I do not like ogres at all. It is just to mutch fatt. They are fast, they charge, they deal impact hits, they stomp. They are T4, imune to thunderstomp and imune to killing blow. They have no good saves, and a so and so magic (unles they take fire bellies.) However there is just soo mutch to chew through.

That works, although I would personally use Sabretusks.
They can, when angled properly, force him to decide between charging them and either overrunning away at a horrible angle OR just reforming and then taking your charge.
Gnoblars can do this but are limited by M4 and larger footprint.
Ogres have the tools to deny enemy charges. its important to use them. I'm going to be putting up a tactics thread soon about this very subject.
