Greetings folks.
I'm currently watching the 3rd episode of the 2nd season of Torchwood.
It's alright, but it's not Dr. Who!

My question is about language. I've heard so many "F" bombs I'm floored. I don't mind at all,
but did this play on regular broadcast TV? Are other shows similar to this? Of the newer Dr. Who
series, and Primeval, I don't recall much profanity at all. Just curious.
Thanks for any info.

Torchwood is the "look at us, we're adults!" spin off of Dr Who, it's pretty much the only show of that vein that tries to do that.

So when it aired, it ran unedited? Are there other shows that have that kind of "adult" language all the time?
Did/do these show air in primetime for all age groups to see?

It was aired after the watershed and wasn't censored (if that's what you mean by edited). Not sure if you have a watershed in the states.

As for other recent regular British scifi television programmes with lots of swearing (remember kids, maturity=swearing and mentioning sex a lot), there isn't really anything that comes to mind other than torchwood.

Just to help I've nicked this off Wikipedia:

'According to Ofcom, the watershed on free-to-air television in the UK is between 21:00 and 05:30[8], while premium or pay-per-view services are allowed to start the watershed at 20:00. Until 1 October 2011, the watershed closed at 05:30 for the premium channels just like it still does for the free-to-air channels. But on 1 October 2011, the watershed rules for the premium channels had been relaxed and it now ends at 06:00 for the premium channels. Programmes that are rated 15 cannot be shown outside this period. However, some 12-rated shows can be shown before 21:00, such as The Simpsons, Malcolm in the Middle, Doctor Who, and Futurama. There is no watershed on PIN protected channels (such as Sky Movies). On this type of channels, trying to view adult material before 20:00 will require a PIN.
There should be a gentle transition to adult material,[9] and 18-rated content must not air until 22:00 on most channels that are without PIN protection. However, channels that are dedicated to airing adult content such as Horror Channel may be allowed to start 18-rated content at 21:00 without PIN protection. R18-rated material is not allowed at all, and must be edited to fit 18-rated content guidelines if shown on television.'

So Basically before 9pm there is a quite polite invariably gentile use of the English language after that it's more like his it is really used, although most choose not to have the silly welsh accents you find in torchwood!

Although how many British Sc-Fi shows are there? The now cancelled 'survivors' is the only one I can think of that has been made in recent history, beyond some of the more fantastical ones on BBC3.

Swearing is quite common in a lot of dramas (just watched the Tudors and the new Sherlock for instance, they had the odd use of 'f' in them). I even heard the 's' word in an afternoon play on Radio 4, which I think is the official measure of whether something is recognised as a swear-word or not!
