So I was reading a friends codex, and was wonder about when the ba and necrons joined together to fight the tyrands, is it just me or does this make no sense at all

They don't really ally...
It is just that neither attack each other, there doesn't seem to be mention of any co-operation or anything like that...

They were in the process of trying to kill each other and not really getting anywhere, when a hive fleet showed up.

They both kinda decided that it was better to kill the bugs and not die than to have a massive free for all.

Just my two cents.

Yeah, to me that was just ridiculous on so many levels.

The new necrons aren't thoughtless robots anymore, though. Their leaders are fully sentient and the higher-ranked soldiery might be too. Teaming up - or at least ceasing hostilities - with some mortals that can see the value of living to fight another day is much better than going down fighting a huge posse of relentless bioengineered killing machines and those mortals at the same time. The necron leader has been around and can tally the odds, that's why he (it?) is the leader. Fighting both - defeat and no profit. Offer the marines a way out - kill tyranids, necrons and marines get out alive, profit.

You can even see it in basic humans... two drunks having a fight in a bar and both turning on the doorman and police when about to be hauled off, for example.

It's not like they sat down at a table with the Adeptus NATO and signed a peace accord or anything. They were united against a common enemy, the Tyranid, which basically amounted to not shooting at one another while also shooting at the bugs. This was the extent of their "alliance".

I'm amazed with all the sheer fluff stupidity in the 5th ed. 'Cron codex people still take issues with the Blood Angels thing. There's much more idiocy going on with the Necrons at the moment.

Eh, if you insist. I find the new Crons to be much more useful from a narrative standpoint. You have the various leaders who have their own, perfectly-mortal drives... housed in an immortal, undying body... coupled with legions of mindless killer robots... maybe even entire worlds of mindless, killer robots, that let you play your Crons however you want to play your Crons.

My thoughts exactly....

They didn't really "team up" it was simply something bigger showed up that wanted to kill both of them, so they diverted their attention to the bigger threat, in the end both sides were badly wounded and because both leaders weren't idiots, they decided to leave instead of fighting each other more because that would just mean seriously heavy losses on both sides.

Well, of all the factions in WH40K (after new 'Cron 'Dex) only (CW) Eldar, Necron and Tau can be thought as allies for humans (A. of convenience of course).
Considering that Necrons in question were led by Silent King himself, i have no problem that THESE Necrons would ally anyone short of Eldar (and possibly Chaos) against Tyranids.
What i'd can only guess is how much info about Tyranid threat he'd shared with Commander Dante.

On an Express Elevator to Hell!!

As others have said, this was discussed to death previously. But, as Langston128 wasn't here for that he deserves some kind of reply.

Personally, I don't have a problem with it. As Psienesis said, it's not like they sat down over coffee or played soccer on Xmas morning together. You have to assume that both the BA and Necrons have rational decision making ability. It was to the benefit of neither of them to fight each other, and so they both withdrew. In the same way they understood that they needed to turn their guns on the Nids otherwise they would have been destroyed. I think perhaps Wards only mistake was to write about this in a 40k galaxy that is increasingly written as describing it's combatants as mindless automatons who cannot think and just run at the enemy until either they or their opponents are destroyed. Orks have become this, even Khorne marines whose mere existence is a paradox (previously Khorne was about honourable combat and the defeat of an opponent, not run screaming at them to collect their skull).

But, in this situation I think it's OK. Had you replaced Necrons with Chaos Marines then perhaps it would have not been OK, but I don't think it was as bad as everyone made out - and I think most people listening to the story they had heard, indicated by the picture below (which isn't actually accurate) rather than reading the actual entry in the codex.

I have more problem with the Storm Raven appearing in every single back story of the Blood Angels. Why had we heard nothing about this vehicle before? Personally I think a lot more of the fans ire should have been directed at GW for daring to release such an appalling model, rather than anything which may or may not have been written in the codex!

Most of outrage was due to this scene's appearance before new 'Cron 'Dex. Hell, one edition ago who could've believed that there'll be Necron (though twisted) comic relief characters?!

Well said. Still some people disagree with the new way the codex went. I mean Necrons were downgraded from a major evil player (we want to kill everyone and feed their souls to our gods) to just another neutral empire who is trying to accomplish its own agendas. So, under the current codex, there is a logic behind a temporary alliance.
By the way, I side myself with the ones who prefer the old codex . The Red Harvest continues!
