So the game is not dead like I suspected, but it's no longer going to be an mmo. http://www.gameinformer.com/b/news/archive/2012/03/29/warhammer-40k-dark-millennium-online-is-no-longer-a-mmo.aspx What do people think? Makes sense to me. You can't really expect any mmo to make money and not one on such rocky footing. It's better that they are doing it this way.

I find MMOs annoying, especially if they are set in an established universe/fantasy world. The quests are mostly completely idiotic, the fact that enemies just reappear is worse, and that there are one million heroes but only 200 actual inhabitants just makes the whole experience feel like a really cheap county fair ride.
As someone on another board put it: "Good, then at least they won't have a Black Templar taking quests from an Eldar".
|
"We train young men to drop fire on people, but their commanders won't allow them to write "feth" on their airplanes because it's obscene!" (Colonel Kurtz in Apocalypse Now)
And you know what's funny? "feth" is actually censored on a forum about a dystopia where the nice guys are the ones who kill only millions of innocents, not billions. |

I'm pissed, to say the least. I don't want another "Spess Mehreen". I wanted a Warhammer IP MMO that doesn't have EA to feth it up.

Plus the fact that unless your MMO is really, extremely, amazingly top-of-the line, odds are people will go for one of the hundreds of free MMOs out there. Champions Online, City of Heroes/Villains, Star Trek Online...I mean, even if there are a lot of really low-quality ones out there, there are quite a few MMOs that are pretty darned good considering they're free. I for one spent a couple hundred hours screwing around in Champions Online.
Honestly, I'm happy about this news. I've had a lot of bad experiences with MMOs - the only one I still play is World of Warcraft. I've wasted a lot of money paying for subscriptions to games that I ultimately never played again - RIFT, Champions Online, and City of Heroes I was all coerced into buying (Champions and RIFT I bought at launch, so there's 100 bucks down the drain alone) and wound up either hating the game (City of Heroes) or realizing that I don't know anyone who actually plays, and got bored (Champions and RIFT). At least now I can feel that I can buy a $50 (or $60) game and still have a fine single-player experience.
Is there any word on whether or not the game will change? I mean, I imagine it's kind of unfeasible to do a single-player game where you can pick one of like nine different, unique storylines to choose from...I suppose it could be the same story from any race's perspective, but this is the one universe that nobody gets along, so I can't see that being realistic in any way.

So instead of looking like WoW it will be more like Skyrim?
I am so pleased....
If there is something I like in a game that's a good story and a lot of freedom, I think that this decision is a good idea.
Unless they give us just one option and one race to play with, then it will be dumb.

Then I will rephrase myself: I love to play a game with open world and lot of character choices and I love to play them alone.
Games like Skyrim, Oblivion, RAGE, STALKER, Fallout...

Yes, I actually miss good single player content. Them making this a single player game will mean that they just focus on gameplay content, because they no longer have to worry about server issues. And as a side benefit, single player games don't have internet lag.
