Curious if people spend more because of tournaments!

Thanks!

On a boat, Trying not to die.

It makes me spend the same amount of money.

I only go to local tournaments where you really only need Wysiwyg and 50% GW, however.

If there weren't tournaments I doubt I would play 40k, let alone buy minis, at anywhere near the same rate I do now.

Whenever I attend a tournament, I end up spending money. Whether it is a new model, one I aaw that played well for someone else, or some supplies I "need", it ends up always costing me to go. In fact, I typically feel guilty for wasting space in a game store without some sort of purchase.

And, if you think about it, that's why stores host tournaments. Inceeasing traffic increases sales. So if you like your FLGS hosting, show some appreciation by supporting more than just tournament fees, try and buy something. Make it worth their time to wake up early and babysit a bunch of gamers.

I would leave the hobby if there were no tournaments.

Additionally, I am always buying new models to try something new. Finally, I try to put together a brand new army for every tourney "season".

Before I played tournaments, I had a 2000 point or so Guard army. I didn't really have many people to play with, and did gakky paint jobs.

Then I started playing tourneys, and buying multiple armies, and the models needed to run multiple builds.

I know have close to 4000 points of guard, close to 5000 points of Dark Eldar, about 7000 points of Tyranids, and 2000 points of Grey Knights. And decent paint jobs.

I also had 2000 points of blood angels, and 3000 of orks that I gave away to family members.

So yes, tourneys made me buy significantly more, and put more time into the hobby side.

I think it depends... People that attend tournaments frequently and win frequently, I would say less. I've met people that have funded entire army builds based on tournament winnings alone...

Personally, I'm buying the stuff I buy either way, so...

That's an interesting point chaos0xomega. I guess I need to vote less, as I'm going to buy whatever I buy regardless of whether it's for a tournament or not, but I "spend" less because of winning prize support.

I buy models from GW for a few reasons:

1. They make something Ork related I like. This is the 'model collector' aspect

2. Every Tourney Season I make a new Ork list which is different. Usually requires me to 'fill out' a type of unit or two which I need more of. 2 Years ago it got me up to 12 KANZ and a bunch of dreads. Last year, I ended up making 8 new trukks from the FW kits and other parts and 45 Lootas. This year I am building 4 new BWs. Without tourneys, I probably would not be building these as much and pretty much be only buying stuff from #1

Speaking for our group as a whole, dating back to GT's of old, tournments have always spurred spending on new models to round out armies or start ones. Its even true today as we've moved on to warmahordes and it spurs on ideas and new armies and purchases.

Hope more old fools come to their senses and start giving you their money instead of those Union Jack Blood suckers...

I doubt I would buy anything at all without tournaments to give me goals to achieve.

Anymore I basically win my armies. When I first started playing I would spend a lot more to stay competitive, at this point though 40k funds itself.

Biased poll is biased. considering its in the tournament section and not gen discussion. Doubtful many beer and pretzle guys bother to look in here.

I voted the same, although that is a new development since I am more and more a beer and pretzle guy then I used to be. I am not a prolific buyer though either way, feel to guilty spending much when there's other things needed in the household.

I used to think the same until I noticed tournament threads getting trolled constantly by people who say they never have and/or never will play in tournaments. Yet they post over and over in tournament discussion threads...

It makes me spend less on GW.

I don't play in GW tourneys, anymore. When I did, I didn't build an army up from scratch for X tourney, i built the army out of what I had and took that. I bought new stuff because I liked it, not because it was needed for a tourney.

I play in ITS sanctioned 'Infinity" tourneys instead.

Being in the "Tournament Discussions" board, no wonder over 70% of people are voting "yes".

We attend tournaments. Thus, we spend what we need to to get armies ready for them. People who don't attend tournaments would vote "the same", I'd imagine, but most don't check here.

In other words, as a soccer player, if you asked me if the existence of a soccer tournament caused me to pay more for my equipment (cleats, balls, uniform, registration fee, intramural league fee for practice, etc etc) I'd say yes (not these days unfortunately, but in college at least). But the vast majority of soccer players would likely say "no", given that they just play for fun / pick-up and don't care about tournaments one way or the other.

I think the results of the poll are then pretty much telling you what you should already know very well from personal experience- tournament players spend money based on what will help them do well in tournaments. However, many players who don't compete in tournaments, are unaffected by them.

It doesn't mean GW shouldn't cater to tournament players more, I just think your poll has a foregone conclusion that doesn't illustrate things much better either way.

Without tournaments I wouldn't play the game. But I voted less because tournaments with prize support is now the only way I get new models.

I am the same way. I havent played a single non tourament game in a year. (though i might play a few over spring break) I must admit i find my self buying 100$atleast for every tourament. Infact i already have a list ready for the next one and i have to spend over 400$

I may have missed something, but I took this simply as a "do you invest more money in GW product, because of tournaments?" question.

For me, the answer is "absolutely." Most years, Adepticon prompts an entirely new army for me, which I will then spend the rest of the year expanding on for other tournaments.

Janthkin has it right. His phrasing is probably better.

Ritides, I actually disagree the forum placing of the poll negatively impacts it. In fact, I think this forum is exactly where it should be.

I want to know if TOURNAMENT players spend more / same / less. Wouldn't it make sense to post such a question in the tournament forum? I realize there are non-tournament players, but they don't attend tournaments, so I doubt their spending would be materially affected by tournament play.

It's about whether tournament players spend more. If I were to find that tournament players spend more because of tournaments (and I ran GW), I'd probably put some effort into supporting tournament play.

I was also curious if there were any reasons people spend less. As this thread has shown, there is actually a reason a few people spend less. They win product they would have otherwise purchased. That certainly happens, but I find most tournaments only give you a very small piece of an army and often gives you an excuse to start an army you would otherwise not have started. It's certainly a factor, but I'd imagine heavily offset by the people who spend more. Interesting nonetheless and valid factor to consider.

The only money I've spent on models in the last 2 years or so has been to replace models that I'd been proxying in my friendly games with proper models for a tournament, so I guess they make me spend more.

Tournaments cost me money.

If I'm playing at home and I want to play a list with 3 war sphinxes, I'll just find three chariot based models and start the game. However, if I decide that I want to take said list to a tournament, I'll actually invest in buying the models.

I'm heading to a GT in April (Brawler Bash V in Raleigh, NC), and I've had to purchase a can of primer, several pots of paint, some basing supplies (Gale Force so I guess GW gets none of that money), a High Elf dragon, 20 new Phoenix Guard, and a pack of movement trays.

Tournament or not, I would have purchased the primer and paints eventually. GW can thank Brawler Bash for the rest of that.

In that case, I might've misunderstood. I guess I take it for granted that tournaments cause me to spend money, since they're always what I'm shooting for with various projects! But, I think I get your point now.
