I started playing 40k for the sci-fi military aspects, I don't really like fantasy. I use a chaplain and terminators, and they kill pretty well. The re-roll is also nice. My captain is a hit or miss. I have him equiped with artificer armour, a power sword, and a bolt gun. He's out of the Black Reach box.

Now, what are the pros and cons of each? I don't really like using named characters, they seem like a very high point cost for something that doesn't grant much more advantage than a normal captain. [something about Salamanders and Vulkan] I want to use a custom army, that I've designed myself, to be different than everyone else.

I think you are asking about Magic.

40K does not have a Magic system.

Librarians have Psychic powers, which is not the same thing.

So use a Librarian with your SM's unless you are playing White Scars, then use a Captain on a Bike, and a Librarian on a Bike.

And this is why we don't skip English class, children. Based on what slivers of meaning I can discern from your shattered argot, I assume you want a comparison between vanilla Marine HQ choices.

Everyone says to get a Librarian because psykers win games. You can cripple enemy invulnerable saves or grant your own, teleport across the board, or just throw out a template that butchers all but the most elite infantry. He also comes with a psychic hood to shut down enemy psychic shenanigans and a force weapon to be a threat to other midrange HQs. For a bargain price you get a psyker that can make your entire army work better and add a dimension that you can't get elsewhere. He literally does multiple things you can't get anywhere else in the book for bargain basement prices.

Chaplains do nothing but make the unit they join angrier. They do nothing for the army as a whole, and just grant fearless, really. Unfortunately, with Combat Tactics, you don't WANT to be fearless. You want to be able to break out of combat, so that you can fall back, autoregroup, and shoot the unit you were just fighting, or simply just not be forced to take fearless saves for losing. Chaplains remove this ability, and their statline and wargear limitations prevent you from making them truly good in combat. There is also a decided lack of units that you would actually want a chaplain to join. In the end, he's still only a W2 IC and can't ever pick up a Storm Shield, unlike the Librarian and Captain. To paraphrase many others, he is bad because he costs just as much as a Librarian, and does nowhere near as much.

Captains can be made reasonably potent in close-range fighting by getting the nice cheap relic blade/combi-melta combo. Str 6 power attacks at I5 and a melta shot aren't bad, especially since you can then unlock the Command Squad and get a FNP squad that can take 4 special weapons or be outfitted for close combat. The Captain himself still isn't particularly impressive compared to the swiss-army-knife psyker, but he at least has very diverse wargear options and unlocks a unit that can be set up for almost anything that doesn't even take a FOC slot.

Good marine HQ's come in many flavors.

A standard Captain/chapter master with a relic blade is very good.

Chaplins can always find a use.

A master of the forge allows FoC trickery, and his conversion beamer works great on a bike.

Librarians allow many bonuses to the army, and give you the ability to stop psy powers.

Named characters are decent, all for difference reasons. If you want something cheap to take, look at chaplin cassius or whatever he's called, he's dirt cheap and very hard to kill.

Yes..... go with what the previous posters have said. Librarians can be incredibly useful! They have a lot of "Bang for your buck".

Any Marine HQ is a good choice. It comes with being the darlings of GW.

And Librarians are psychic, not magic. The two come off as deliberately similar, but it's still rooted in sci-fi.

You're free to like whatever HQs. I personally adore Chaplains, I have both a jumping Chaplain and Terminator Chaplain. I love the idea of a zealot inspiring his squad to even greater fury against the unclean. But all that sort of thing is personal preference, which you shouldn't need to get from a forum. However, being a cool unit and being a good unit are not the same thing. The Librarian does the most for the points you pay for him. Spending the same points on a Chaplain gives you a slightly weaker army. If you dislike the Librarian enough that you'd rather lose a little more often, that's entirely up to you.

I say go with what you like. If people are pressuring you to field certain models in your army, tell them that what their models are for- to field what they want. Your money and time are yours to do with what you want.

If you think Chaplains are cooler than Librarians, then totally go for it.
