In lieu of the new paint range I have decided to re paint my space marine army. I thought it would be simple, striking and very different if I painted an entire army as if they were very old weathered copper statues. I come here to you with my idea because I have no idea what to do with it, fluff and painting/modeling wise.
The main effect I wanted was this: http://www.dakkadakka.com/gallery/96351-Metal%20Statue.html
Although it looks cool, I don't know if it's too bland for an entire army, and plus vehicles might look a little weird. So, if you have any creative ideas and such I would love it! Thanks!

It looks really cool imo.

If your worried ablut a lack of variety to keep the army interesting you could go with some other schemes between squads

Rusting Iron, Tarnished Silver.
if you're a particularly talented painter maybe even a marble statue look might be possible.

Maybe make the Commander Gold (which doesnt rust or tarnish)

As for tips on how to accomplish any of this, im useless i just come to this part of the forum to admire others work.

Tyranids - 3100 pts
Purple Necrons - 2000 pts

If done right it will look cool. If done wrong it will look like slop. Unique idea I like it, but look at other types of statues along with your current idea. Add some fluff to give the othe player some insight on how it is relevant to the 40k universe if you do tournaments with it. Vehicles will not look weird... Look at the 2011 slayer sword guys ork on the bike.

If they end up looking like an army of statues, that would be bad, IMHO, coz they're supposed to be soldiers not statues. But an army who've given their armour an outer coating of copper/brass and then let it tarnish (hopefully for some interesting fluff reason), that sounds fine.

It does make a slight difference to the painting - statues would look like the sample photo, but tarnished copper/brass armour would be darker and shinier in all the joints (which are still lubricated and maintained as normal).

@everyone, thanks
And@clang, should I paint the faces and other details as well? Also, the idea was to kind of make them literally look like statues re animated...

So basically 40k version of Terracotta warrior in Mummy 3 wrath of the dragon emperor?

or 40k version of the dragon emperor statue?

Works for me! ( isnt that what Thousand Sons are anyways? )

It is my Inspiration, it's actually not mine, but talonus the creator has a tute up. I'm going to use some patina paint over some airbrushed bronze! Also stuff like this: http://santacruzwarhammer.blogspot.com/2011/11/painting-real-rust-fun-and-easy-way.html

I might steal this idea for my chaos chosen squad. Exquisite silver armor left to decay seems much more in theme for chaos.

Oh, I remember reading somewhere about a guy who was putting grains of salt in the paint and then scraping off the salt to show the layer underneath to make some pretty nice pitting effects.

I think it would work if you made all the armor plating like that, but painted all the hoses, piping, weapons, skin, seals, etc. normally. Like flowers decorating a memorial statue.

If you just go for a fully bronze statue look, it will most likely just look lazy or boring. Now, really well done OSL with glowing eyes on a fully bronze statue army might be a good way to go.

2012- stopped caring
Nova Open 2011- Orks 8th Seed---(I see a trend)
Adepticon 2011- Mike H. Orks 8th Seed (This was the WTF list of the Final 16)

Would probably need a weird special rule, like "Free Run move everytime opponent blinks"...

I like the idea. A terracotta style army with some of the aftermarket Japanese/ samurai bits would be cool too.

Ive been tempted to try a Frank Miller/Sin City style grey scale army. All colored and shaded in greys and black with some bright red to pop certain details.

Whats my game?
Warmachine (Cygnar)
10/15mm mecha
Song of Blades & Heroes
Blackwater Gulch
X wing
Open to other games too

I like the idea of having the details picked out, but I feel like it would ruin the bronze statue effect... Maybe if I do details in an obsidian....

That pantina paint does not work as well for figure size,Terrain though o-boy.
The effect you want is easy basecoat dwarf Bronze.
Water down hawh turquoise 8 parts water to two parts paint and cover the model.
Once dry water down vallejo verdi-gris glaze and coat it with that.

So, I shouldn't use the patina paint? Just wash with hawk turquoise, And the Vallejo stuff. Is that what you do Eisenhorn?
