So I would Like to start a skaven force. I've picked up the Island of Blood and I think ima pick a a few more skaven Island of blood sets off ebay since they are cheaper. That would give me 120 clanrats, 6 rat ogres etc. Is this a good place to start? I eventually want to build a Clan pestilens force.

My other question is, is it possible to build the plagueclaw/lightning cannon and screaming bell/plague furnace to be interchangeable with magnets or something or are you pinned to however you choose to put it together?

Thats a good place to get the bulk of your force nice and cheaply. Skaven is an expensive army.

I'm not sure about the Plagueclaw/lightining cannon being interchangable. I believe the Bell and Furnace are, but it would be a tough job.

Well I picked up one of each so I guess Ill find out. I recently found the local shop normally runs 1000 point games. I havent opened my screaming bell yet is it worth it/normal to field it in a 1000 point army or would it be better used in 1500 point. Seems silly to tie up almost half my points in one unit but clan rats are cheap so id will be able to field 100+.

I was thinking of exchanging it for 40 plague monks if I wont get much use out of it.

There is a way to make them interchangeable, the catapult/cannon. It will be a bit of a chore, I wanted too but decided it was easier to buy more models. I have two furnaces and 1 bell and truthfully, the furnace is great and the only good thing I have found for the bell is the 4+ ward.

I don't think you will be able to fit either comfortably into 1000 points. Thats an awfully tiny amount of points for Fantesy. 2500 is a medium sized game.

Yeh I ended up keeping the bell and found a way to make it interchangeable. Ive found a way to make the cannon/catapult interchangeable too. Ive gotten a bunch of plague monks as well.. Ive been looking through the old codex as my new one is still in the mail and Im really liking the clan Pestilens theme. According to this one the different clans have different mainstays so with clan Pestilens the mainstay unit is plague monks. So far my general Idea is:

2 Regiments of plague Monks (40) 240
1 Regiment of Clanrats (40) 200
1 Regiment of clanrat slaves (40) 80
1 Plagueclasw catapault (100)
5 Plague Census bearers (85)
1 Grey Seer
1 Plague Priest

65 pnts for upgrads/other stuff

Still kinda up in the air cause im not sure how accurate this codex is atm

Edit for above:
Yeh the points are kinda low as you can see I left out the Furnace/bell above and I may drop the catapult/cannon too. They are trying to get fantasy off the ground at my FLGS so they are starting with small 1000 point matches so people dont have to make a big investment. They run 40k as well around the same point level but it seems 40k runs better at 1000 points that fantasy so they may up the points level in the future.

I know you've already found your own way, but there's always this:

Flip the arm around, move the crew and it's a WLC.

Just make sure to throw an extra Plague Monk on a base for the PCC, since it has 4 wounds/crew. I plan on using the little banner topper dude from the Plague Monk set.

Why?

Skaven warmachine aren't like others, the book specifically says that the machine + crew are a single model, not 1 model + crew models that act as wound markers. The wording is such that it's a clear indication of a difference from the 8th ed book and you don't remove crew token as you lose wounds.

Only using the 3 crew that the kit comes with is perfectly fine.

I'd have to double check my army book (which as at home), but doesn't the FAQ address that?

Page 47 – Plagueclaw Catapult, profile
Change the Wounds and Attacks characteristics of the crew to
“1”. Change the paragraph after the profile to “The Plagueclaw
Catapult is a war machine with three crew.”

For the WLC also:

Page 68, 106 – Warp Lightning Cannon, Special Rules
Ignore the Ponderous War Machine paragraph. Change the
second paragraph to “The Warp Lightning Cannon is a war
machine with three crew.”

Edit: which makes it seem strange that the PCC has only 3 crew but has 4 wounds...

Yeah, I actually had my book on hand when I posted that. Looks like the PCC now has 3 wounds instead of the 4 in the book(not the only warmachine to lose wounds due to the new rules).

Well, at least I don't need the 4th crew member after all.
