The Talos pain engine is awesome but with out an invo save it dies way to easy to power weapons. Why doesnt it have an invo save?

Very few monstrous creatures have invulnerable saves. The Wraithlord could use one too. But I think it would be a bit broken if all monstrous creatures that needs one would have an invulsave. Nidzilla x10.

It has a high toughness. Thanks to that you should only really worry about power fists.

From memory, the only monstrous creatures with standard invul saves are demons and dreadknights, named ones don't count in this equation.

If it got an invul it'd probably cost 50 more points for even just a 5++.

That said, I still don't think the Talos is that good. D6 attacks sounds good and all but you could easily just wind up with a 1 or 2. In order to have any kind of consistency you need the chainflails. But then all you got is a TL Splinter Cannon to shoot with. So you probably want to give it a haywire blaster or a heat lance.

At which point, a Ravager with flickerfields would is cheaper and brings more of what most armies need this edition: Anti-Tank.

But... if you want to use it, go ahead! Cause it is scary nonetheless.

Exactly what kind of power weapons are capable of putting a consistent hurt on the Talos?

And if you say 'powerfists,' you must be new to the game, because powerfists are pretty much the across the board counter to MCs, and rule 1 of their tactica is to keep them as far from fists as possible.

So it has a hard counter. Needs to be some way to kill it.

In da beginning, in the dawn of 3rd, the Dark Eldar were really just concept to be “evil” elder. The Talos was just the DE more CC equivalent to the Wraithlord. Back in 3rd invul saves were a rare thing and reserved mostly for HQ type models. The wraithlord never had an invul save so they didn’t give one to the talos and those traditions have spilled over to the current books. That is pretty much why. I

Power weapons ignore it's armour save. That's all they do.

You still need to get it wounded, and at T 7 it's one of the toughest MC's in the game (Wraithlords are 8, but i doubt they'll get to stay that way come next codex).

If you aren't hitting at at least S 4 you can't even hurt it, and even then it'll only be on a 6. You need to be piling out S 7 or better to be consistently hurting it

Odds are that you wouldn't get hurt too many times against most foes in CC, as few armies can field whole units of S4+ power weapons/fists/etc that you'd want to bring a Talos anywhere near (there are some (DE Incubi, SM Terminators, Meganobz for example). I tend to lose mine to shooting far more often. Squad leaders with a power weapon can hurt it, but are usually unlikely to kill it outright, assuming they can actually land a wound on it, meaning that it will whale on them in return.

Powerklaws, Thunderhammers and Powerfists will mulch it, to be sure, but they mulch anything else they hit too

You may be thinking of Force weapons, that can instakill you if they get a wound in (with psychic test), and Grey Knights have one on every model, as well as a strength buffing psychic power. Combine those and any MC will go down hard, even those who DO have invulnerables, as sooner or later a wound will get through, and the psychic test is laughable easy to pass (assuming that you're not up against Eldar with runes Daemons and a few others have Eternal Warrior, and so might theoretically last longer, but i believe GK get to sidestep that too.. ) .

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Frankly there are too many Invulnerable saves in the game these days, and they keep having to make them more and more uber to make them have 'ooh shiny! ' appeal.

SInce we have now hit the 2+,3++,4 FNP age, there's not much further we can go

I wouldn't mind having an invulnerable save on my Talos, believe me, but i think things would be better if they didn't get handed out like candy
