CAIRO (AP) — Egypt's Coptic Church withdrew Monday from an Islamist-dominated committee to draft the nation's new constitution and a leading Christian figure said the minority was never really represented to begin with.

The move fed growing fears that Islamists and the military will end up controlling the most important governmental bodies in post-revolutionary Egypt and minorities, women and the liberal groups that drove last year's uprising will be largely excluded. Out of 100 members of the committee originally selected, there were six Christians, six women and a handful of liberals — disproportionately low numbers.

Yousef Sidhom, editor of the weekly Watani newspaper and a Coptic Church official, said the church never officially put forth any members for the panel selected last week.

"How can we withdraw from something we have not been a part of," he said. "We are calling on people to withdraw along with other groups that have pulled out," Sidhom added

If you don't at least try to stand up for the people you represent, why are you representing them in the first place?

They should be. Things are going to start really sucking for them if the Muslim Brotherhood and Salafis complete a takeover.

Its not like certain other countries, with a Christian majority, get upset because they think their head of state might be a Muslim, or that a candidate for that office is a Mormon.

Maybe, maybe not.

The Egyptian Brotherhood isn't nearly as bad as it used to be (being a banned organization ~50 years has that effect), and the Salafi don't have a huge amount of power.

Either way, it doesn't matter, the most likely outcome is that the Brotherhood takes power with the grudging support of the military.

Either way, it doesn't matter, the most likely outcome is that the Brotherhood takes power with the grudging support of the military.

True of course in that "mythical" country they haven't already had dozens killed and churches burned either.

Well, maybe not as many but it does happen. At least regarding the burning of Mosques, there have probably been at least a couple dozen Muslims murdered for being Muslims (or looking Muslim) since 9/11 as well; it is a big country.

Dogma..you and I both know that Egyptian Copts who want to get to the US have to swim across the Atlantic.....building a wall there isn't effective, not when we can have naval war games!

I'm not sure why having your life threatened for being Christian is any different from having your life threatened for not liking the cartels. Well, I am sure, its because religion often gets special treatment in the US, at least if you're Christian or Jewish. Well, also if you're Muslim, but its more like "special" than special.

And I think it is to the topic: Why are we letting these people in, but trying to kick other people out? Why do we deny Mexicans asylum, while accepting Egyptian Copts?

The revolution was by and large a conservative islamist one. The guy who wrote this is clueless.
