I've assembled most of tank army and painted some of them, but Im beginning to wonder how did you guys paint the tracks. I've painted mine with the track already glued to the tank, Im wondering does it make a big difference if I painted before gluing them on? I know I know upload pics. My cellphone is broken ATM, once its fixed I promise I'll upload pic of my 40 panzers.
I paint them on the Tanks. After my primer of Dunkaleb, I base coat with Vallejo Cavalry Brown (kinda brick red) then a dry brush of Citadel Boltgun Metal. After that, I wash with Citadel Devlan Mud and Citadel Badab Black.
I have yet to get to weathering on adding mud effects but I plan to add mud by using Apple Barrel Brown as due to the low quality of this craft paint, it is perfect to look like mud as the paint itself has a muddy texture. Also, it is about 6 years old which greatly contributed to its muddy texture.

Glue everything together and then coat the tracks with German Grey from Vallejo. Finish it all off with Devlan Mud.
40K - some Guard, some green marines and some green skins
Warmahordes - the mighty Khador
FoW - US 3rd Infantry Division Rifle Company - US 2nd Armoured Division 'Hell on Wheels'
I paint mine with the tracks glued on, it's not like you have to hit every square inch of track, especially since most of it's going to be tucked up under the hull or face down on the table.
Casual wargamer, casual painter, casual grad student. I can do formal though, I do own a tuxedo T-shirt.
I've had reasonable results painting them in in the FoW rusty brown color (can't remember what its called) drybrushing GW boltgun metal, then finishing with a brown/black wash. Doesn't take a lot of time and looks reasonable. Those are only for all metal tracks though. I'm still figuring out how to paint the tracks on my Shermans
Since I am looking for heavy weathered, rusty look I am doing it simply. I paint the tracks in dark grey and apply heavy splash on with AP Quickshade Dark Tone. The same Dark Tone goes to the inside part of tracks as well. After it has dried out (10-14 hours) I do some heavy brushing with ForgeWorld Rust powder.
The pic is not good and a bit blurry since it was taken in a hurry just for comparison shot.

Looking to trade away 15mm Forged in Battle Pumas (still in the box).
I do mine with the dunkelgelb on the wheels, black on the Tracks, then drybrush with metalic colour (any) then drybrush with Iraqi Sand.
I also use Tamiya Weathering powders for gun muzzles and tracks to add a bit more dust.
Below is how I used to do it, but it looks too clean and also wrong. So I repainted it, and added weathering powders.

Collecting Forge World 30k????? If you prefix any Thread Subject line on 30k or Pre-heresy or Horus Heresy with [30K] we can convince LEGO and the Admin team to create a 30K mini board if we can show there is enough interest!

Basecoat black drybrush some grey, heavy drybrush scorched brown, drybrush boltgun metal and wash with badab black/devlan mud. For highlights i use a light drybrush of gw chainmail as its not to bright as mithril silver.

A battleforce, some guardians, a DA box, 2 banshee boxes,1 warp spider box,2 swooping hawk boxes, Found new love for the guys, debating on whether i should start or not
I paint them 'on sprue' with a rusty metallic color, then drybrush a clean metallic color over it ( like tin bitz > boltgun metal ) then mount the tracks, fix any mistakes and wash the whole in a dark black/brown tone. I don't use mud as I disbelieve the "all is mud" as the everyday environment for my 40k vehicles. So they are a bit rusty, mostly metallic and fit on every surface.

We were wrong. It's not the 40k End Times. It's the Trademarkening.
Some of my tracks were painted on the sprue and some were painted when assembled, but all were done roughly the same way.
-Black primer (Spray can or brushed-on gesso),
-Very light drybrush of Metalic Silver Sterling (a craft paint a bit lighter than boltgun metal)
-Glue on balast for mud (I used Pumice-based Sand paint texture from the hardware store) if desired.
-Paint mud brown with a bit of brown wet-drybrushed elsewhere
-Drybrush very lightly wit tan
In the end the entire tank Brush-Dipped with Minwax Polyshades which is of course not essential to what you're asking.
Not groundbreaking, but it's fast and looks good on the tabletop.

Elif- Your tracks are on backwards. Not that you should know, but the GW tracks are virtual copies of real-world M113 tracks and the angled bit faces the other direction
For the Emperor! Kill Maim Burn!... I mean purge the unclean!
I usually prime black, then paint a slightly watered down Tin Bitz. Then I take boltgun metal and dry brush it over the tin bitz. By dry brushing I can spread out the paint and let the tin bitz come through to where it looks like rust. And if i feel like it i put on some dirt color(devlan mud or dheneb stone dry brushed over).
Waiting for my shill money from Spiral Arm Studios
I paint the tracks with Bestial Brown followed by a drybrush of Boltgun metal and a Devlen Mud wash. It gives a nice dirt look to the tracks.

Cato Sicarius, after force feeding Captain Ventris a copy of the Codex Astartes for having the audacity to play Deathwatch, chokes to death on his own D-baggery after finding Calgar assembling his new Eldar army.
I now use a basecoat of Granite (can't remember the first bit but starts with 'Char' - would look it up but it doesn't exist anymore...) then drybrush boltgun metal.
Finally wash with pigments to represent dust / mud.
Check out my gallery here Also I've started taking photos to use as reference for weathering which can be found here. Please send me your photos so they can be found all in one place!!

Thanks for the heads up. I'll go back and check my other tanks, though it being 40k and thus having no reason to try for reality, I probably won't change anything.
I should probably go and check my m113-to-rhino conversion and see if I got it wrong there too...

This can be as simple or as complicated as you like. Since I like simple and don't seek awards, Boltgun followed by a black wash (I mixed my own, based on Pledge) works for me. That black wash is the same one that the rest of the vehicle gets BTW, so my only real time investment is painting the tracks in the first place. When I paint my GK Razorbacks, I probably won't even bother using a separate color for the tracks; I'll make the difference with drybrushing.
Does it work? It depends on how picky you are. I'm this picky:
There are people here that are far pickier and far, far better at painting, and I respect them. But this is where I'm at. I don't think that it would look bad to most. Did I mention that it's very easy?
