Im starting a project and even from the conception/design stage its gonna be MASSIVE and the problem is the city is seperated into 3 sections the 1st section is civilian witch isnt hard (im using citadel scenery) i just dont make anything look military make some buildings dont put sandbags and stuff in them just regular cities of death type terrain but the second section is military and im stuck for ideas on what to populat the sector with I have already got a HQ, Arbites Precinct and an armoury as well as a few bunkers, bastions and the fortress of redemption thrown in there but that is no where near enough to populate the area so my qustion is do you guys have any ideas.

It doesnt matter if most of the voices are in your favour it is often the loudest voices get heard especially when they're shouting gak.

Build the 'easy' Civilian section first and put pictures up here, we'd love to see them. While you're building it, you'll likely get ideas on the other sections.

The Civilian section could have makeshift and portable fortifications. This is a war-torn city. It may not have the bunkers of the military, but soldiers bring their own cover.

Military sections aren't fortifications in their own right. The 'armory' could have watchtowers or strongpoints or even small walls to protect weapons caches from civilians and criminals. Also, a factory would make tons of sense. Maybe even a tank parking lot.

Make sure that there is some space in between the buildings for roads and vehicle movement. Maybe have one or two sections being civilian with hab centers which could be made quite easy with normal foam board. Then maybe and administration center and a industrial district. The armory you wanted could be next to or part of the administration buildings. Most of the military stuff would be scattered through out the whole city with some areas having more of it then others because they were acting as the center of the defenses. Also having roads through out the city actually lets the rules for roads be used.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Other things you could add would be a garden area with statues and other decorations that could provide lots of cover for units hiding in it but wouldn't block line of sight very much. Also tank traps and other barricades set up by both side. Try to avoid filling the whole board with too much stuff or else the game will break down into a lot of rolling for difficult so unless you want to to play cities of death you will want to have a mix of different terrain. Heck have a few boarded up intact buildings that cant be entered but will make people move around them.

Make some support buildings, e.g. vehicle repair workshops, fuel/supply depots.

Finland... the country next to Sweden? No! That's Norway! Finland is to the east! No! That's Russia!

You actually could just make regular civilian buildings, then reinforce and fortify them with everything you can.

Sweet Jesus, Nurgle and Slaanesh in the same box!?
No, just Nurgle and Slaanesh, Jesus will be sold seperately in a blister.

Oklahoma City, Ok.

Grave yard, power generators, water towers/storage.
Hell, you could even have a livestock area.

DFW area Texas - Rarely

For military, make the walls thicker, and more blocky - use 1/2" foam if you can get some. Put more antenna's on, landing pads, etc.

Also, in the civilian area, skip some of the cod stuff that is more industrial, and save that for the military area. The military area might have more barricades etc. The civilian area, put in dumpsters, things for shops, etc.

Best of luck!

You could do a couple things for the civilian area. A shanty town for the poor, using some pieces of card board. Being that its a poor area it is also easier on the wallet to do. Also, gardens would be a nice touch a long with a small shrine or two. For military you could do something like a defencive turrets from spair bits and such. A couple of berricades and road blocks. Industrial shouldn't be too hard. Mainly a few buildings and smoke stacks.

I guess the question is just what do you want the sections to look like?

Personally, I'd do something a little different for the military sector. Decide a purpose for it first, and maybe even a little back story.

First off, the look: Military facilities have several unifying features. 1) A standardized look. It's a good bet all the buildings will be painted the same, usually neutral colors like whites browns and tans, but typically not camo. Remember though that military stuff is usually function over form. If it wasn't expected to be near the front lines, it probably won't be hardened. 2) Security. This can be as complex as watch towers and weapon emplacements for really secure facilities, or as simple as a guard shack as the front gate. Pretty much standard though is a wall or fence around the entire facility. Without some kind of basic perimeter it just won't look right

Most military districts in cities are administrative in nature, the only difference would be increased security (in the grim darkness of the future, this would probably mean a couple of automated heavy bolter turrets near the doors). As administrations are boring, lets look at other options.

Recruitment: Cities are great places to seek recruits, taking some artistic license a recruitment center could feature a lot of "military" looking features. A couple small buildings to support staff and operations. A landing pad for aircraft to pick up recruits and fly them off to basic training, and maybe some simple training/"the experience" features like a small obstacle course and a rifle range. The fun here would be the details. Propaganda posters, targets that look like orks/chaos marines/ect. could really look cool.

Maintenance depot: If the city is know for it's industry a maintenance and refurbishment depot would make sense. This would allow for (beyond the basic staff buildings) things like garages, refueling stations, wash racks, and of course the motorpool, which would make for an interesting mix of cover and open space. While a sea of Chimeras would be cool, a bunch of repainted and up armored toy cars from a flea market or dollar store would probably do just fine without costing you an arm and leg.

Supply Center: Even in the gothic space future armies still march on their stomach. A supply center would feature things like warehouses filled with military gear, stacks of crates and containers, a landing pad and loading dock for moving stuff in and out. and heavy lifting gear to move it. Again the fun here would be the details. Think about what it would take to put 5,000 people in the field and keep em there. Everyone remembers the crates of ammo and replacement tank treads, but a yard filled with porta-potties and crates of toilet paper would no doubt be present as well. If the rest of the board is intended to look like the battle was expected then add some burn barrels and pile of charred supplies where the depot personnel attempted to destroy supplies to prevent it's capture and use by the enemy.

I'd love to see a 40k Carwash. People still drive cars right?
