Hello,

I'm still on experimenting level. While I got the whole minis details, decals and almost highlighting figured out, the base paint eludes me.

Right now I got one lighter ultra while other is darker only cause I was messing with paints -.-' only way out is either to paint darker one few parts bit light, or put him in a bunker lol.
Dunno what went wrong tho. I did black primer on him, regal blue 2:1 coat, than 50/50 mix ultra regal blue. I did apply Asuremarine Blue wash (spelling?) as in drybrushing to clear out few mistakes.
And before you know it, those 2-3 coats of blue ink wash turned the bastard like a chaos marine o.O and he looked pissed.

so *cough* what's your choice of paints to make figure look like generic ultra?
p.s. anyone know where to find cheap decals? looked ebay, they just don't sell ultra last time I checked. Needs to be paypal and worldwide
p.s.2. what's your take on those micro pens to make letters? I'm struggling to make letters on seal, while I can make few on shoulders and such, its hard.

Here's how I paint my Ultras: http://fromthewarp.blogspot.com/2012/02/how-i-paint-ultramarines-dark-and-very.html
I've got a slightly "cleaner" method here: http://fromthewarp.blogspot.com/2010/12/basics-science-fiction-model.html

I'm sorry about the decals, most of my stuff is freehand. I'm trying to make my own decals though for future use.
As for the micro pens. you'll get better results with a good paintbrush and slightly thinned Charadon Granite. The lighter color instead of black gives a better appearance I believe and the micron pens (while small tipped) do not do that well for script on purity seals.

Hope this helps!

When people ask me, "How do you build your army?"
I tell them its "The ten-zero factor, coolness ten, combat effectiveness... zero."

I use Ultramarines blue to paint my Ultramarines.

I dislike all the Regal Blue Ultramarines. I could paint your dudes fists reds and nobody could tell the difference. :(

Nice scheme there Ron...but looks a bit too much like Crimson fists to me :/

I think maybe...Enchanted blue, wash blue or black, layer with enchanted blue again, highlight with ultramarines blue?

Would be much brighter, and the highlights would blend in slightly more.

Don't blame me if it goes bad...I paint wolves, not smurfs

I like the regal blue as a base, then a badab black wash - then a very light drybrush of ultramarine blue afterwards, and a highlight of spacewolf gray ... then badab black again to bring it together and counter the dusty effect.

But that's just me

Thanks for the help, guys !

But could someone explain to me why is it that almost everytime when I use baddbad black wash on regal blue for example, it turns me marine all "muddy" like, and I have to paint new paint on almost everything. Its as if someone just slapped black color on the base coat :S

Hmm, hamlet, how does the space wolves grey look? Figured somebody does mixing ultramarine blue + space wolves grey. Does space wolves grey do the trick by itself, even if its not a blue color?

There's also a trick like ultramarine blue highlighting, then white highting as drybrushing?

I will look up for that granite paint, thanks Ron.

Dunno if my eyes are playing tricks on me or what, but is it just me or the ultramarine paint is bit too bright? (after wash that is?)

P.s. do you people baddbad wash the whole model? What about blue wash? And drybrushing the wash?

Make sure your brush is very wet before you dip it in the wash pot (to water down the wash a little) and make sure you don't put too much wash on the model. You want some shading, darkness in the recesses, but you don't want so much wash that everything becomes a lot darker.

I did mine with humbrol french blue spray, but then I have become a cataclysmically lazy painter as I've got older.

I base coat UM blue, wash with Asurman blue, then dry brush with UM blue. I use about a 50/50 mix UM blue and SW grey for the highlights. My Vanguard Vets are here:

Your beliefs do not match with my experiences. The 0.2mm nib on my pen is finer than what 99% of people could ever accomplish with a good brush. It's perfect for purity seals and you can write, with practice mind you, minuscule inscriptions with relative ease.

The supply does not get to make the demands.

Hey buddy. spacewolf gray is a blue based gray and fits into the blue spectrum pretty nicely. That said you have to use it sparingly as fine edge-highlighting. It would usually be my final highlight after a previous highlight of ultra-blue; ideal is to wet blend them together at the edges - but I haven't quiet got the hang of that yet.

Armorcast has decals but I don't think they have ones for Ultramarines. IIRC, they do have omega symbol decals but you may be able to flip them for a look different then the average ultramarine army. BTW, the sheets are are a tad over five bucks american if that helps

Hmm, I'll look around forgeworld as well as I do recal them having decals, especially for Raven guard too that I may need.

As for paints, I've already applied blaxk coat, 50/50 ultra regal and washed it slightly with blue wash. But its deff kinda dark for crimson fist

What would be my next step, dry brush it with ultra blue or black wash first then ultra drybrush?

Thx for all the help, guys

I know if you look on GW it shows what they re-named most of thier paints as.. If you painted ultramarines before the new paints that should help.

For my Ultras, the next step would be dry brush with straight UM blue. I feel washes work better when you stay in the same color family. Washing with black is why you're getting the "muddy" look. If your final color is a dark blue, black would be ok, but for a medium shade of blue, like UM blue, a dark blue wash works better.

Thank you, Ultra Grey
Then I'm all set.
I'll leave shoulders for marines without symbols till I find decals to stick on. Surprisingly I'm actually able to put them on without any decal setting solution, and they look quite good too (no gloss whatsoever)

And hopefuly find some pen for those seal letters..
Cheers
