I am planning on making some scary, Baltic forest type of terrain for my own needs, and my friend came across Woodland Scenics products in Hongkong. Since they're unavailable in the Philippines and would cost me quite a lot of money to ship, she was willing to buy me some as long as I specify the ones I like.

Okay now to the questions:

1) What's the difference between fine foliage, clump foliage, foliage etc.? I am overwhelmed by the number of products they have and I do not know what to buy, exactly.

2) By any chance is it possible to add additional colors to said foliages? If so, how?

3) Any links to product reviews regarding these said Woodland Scenics products?

4) Any photos of examples of these products in use?

Well the product which goes under title "foliage" is basically a sheet, which You can cut and stretch as You wish. Clump foliage comes in a bag and is tends to stick together hence its name. It's good to stick around hills and You can make trees out of it and some wire. I am not really getting what do You mean by adding additional colors - but You can mix different types and colors. Woodland Scenics is quite popular in historical range, especially for Flames of War - I have in mind some video/picture tutorials how lads made boccage or based their minis with their products, if You wish.

And btw, I live in Baltics and our forests are not scary

Here is the one with their lichen product.

Every kind of forest can be scary, I just chose the Baltics mostly because of playing too much of the Teutonic campaign in Medieval Total War 2, and I imagine that for a normal medieval peasant living in Western Europe, the Baltics would be the land where pagans roam free and it would conjure up images of (widely innacurate) dark sinister rituals in his medieval Christian mind.

And yes please, I would like to see videos and picture tutorials! All it takes for me to make an informed decision on what to buy.

With additional colors, like adding paint on them to add variety and depth to the foliage. I understand that this would be very hard, if downright impossible, and even if I succeed it might make the product unusable.

I just updated my post with a couple of linkies. And no, I would not suggest trying to paint these - at least not the clumpy ones. I never tried that but I am pretty sure acrylic paint will make that stuff to harden and eventually crumble. And the effect will be immediate, permanent and not pretty.

If you have appropriate coloured flocks, you can use watered down PVA applied to certain areas of the foliage with a brush and then apply the flock to the tree - good if you have a light and dark flock of the same colour (green, or orange, etc) to give some variation to the foliage.

I'm interested in the Woodland Scenics Foliage range (the one that cainthehunter said is sheet-like): does anyone have photos of them in use on trees made for 28mm and above?

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Additional question: would anyone recommend what to buy if I'm doing said scary forest? I was thinking of purchasing maybe a lichen pack, a clump foliage pack and two colors of the foliage pack. I just don't know what colors to use.

I am not sure that sheet foliage is what You are looking for in terms of "tree-building". Clumps would be better suited. I also dunno what is a Baltic forest depiction in TW, but You should be aiming at dark green look with lots of pine-fir trees. In fact, a good start will be using fir trees, which are made for scale railroad hobby-dioramas.

Conifers and firs sounds about right. Those I can make/purchase here cheaply: I'm more concerned about deciduous trees, and the foliage I'm buying are for those said trees. I would like to use both clumps and sheet foliage to have variety.

But You do know that WS have complete tree kits with all items necessary for complete trees - it is just that You want to make Your own trunks etc?

Well I'm not planning on buying them for a variety of reasons: 1) They're not available in that HK store 2) Even if they are, since I can't inspect them personally I can't decide if they are the trees I'm looking for 3) Even if they are the trees I'm looking for, I know I can make trees of the exact structure I want with copperwire and putty I already have, and do it cheaply and 4) They would be expensive.

I see. But I'd nevertheless recommend You looking at the http://www.antenocitisworkshop.com/ . They have lots of WS products for sale but they are more than another online retailer - the product representation is good, there are some review and modelling articles and You can actually see which products WS recommend in their own tree kit packages, so You can plan Your project accordingly.

My problem with ordering online is that shipping fee in the Philippines is waaay overcosted. I won a $150 gift certificate at miniwargaming because of the last Dakka Painting Challenge, and the shipping fee was $75. That's half of my prize! That doesn't include the fee I'd pay the post office back here. So I just sent it to the address of my friend who lives in the US and would visit here around May to save on shipping.

That's why I'm making my other friend in HK buy the foliage for me: to save on shipping.

I appreciate your help! Would check it out just to look at how they would look like with certain products.

Actually Maelstrom Games does worldwide shipping of non-GW products and shipping is free as long as Your order exceeds 10 GPB. And they have some stuff from Woodland scenics as well.

It's the norm here when we're ordering anywhere in North America or Europe. My friends order wigs and props a lot for cosplay, and the shipping fee is usually more than half of the actual cost of the product.

Thankfully, miniwargaming made it so that I can pay for shipping using the points on my gift certificate. That's pretty nice. Funny thing though, if I won 3rd place I would've ended up paying for my "prize" if I shipped it here. Not anybody's fault, anyway. It's a good thing i have friends who live in the US and the shipping was reduced to $10 or something, I don't actually remember.

Props to miniwargaming and their excellent customer service!

@CainTheHunter Ooooh i didn't know that! I'll check if they do ship here, and maybe place an order.
