So the Empire are out, which means we can start to speculate on whats next, rather than rumors etc. I'd like to know what people think will be next and... perhaps more interestingly what should be next. I ask this second question not from a point of view of which armies have waited longest but which armies need to be adjusted most to bring them in line with the current 8th edition books.

Thirdly for these speculative releases what do you think needs to be done to the army to change them and what new units would you like to see?

Personally I think that the next armies that need doing are Daemons, dark elfs and warriors (in that order). I would speculate that we will probably see dark elfs, then wood elfs/brettonians.

Changes as follows:

Daemons- general points changes (increases) maybe unit cap for things like bloodletters, a change to the unstable rule army wide and only a 5+ or 6+ ward commonly found, new units-some kind of giga spawn, possibly a return of plague riders as monstrous cavalry, some bizzare big gribbly command monster (out of the same kit as the spawn) and plastic nurgle

Dark elves- more expensive hydras, change to magic (losing the free spell and forcing at least 1 caster to take a certain lore), aside from that while I expect new toys i couldnt call them.

WoC- end to chosenstar, plastic chaos trolls, plastic chosen, war altars toned down (or made 0-1), more expensive marauders.... thats all I got, your turn, happy speculating.

Aren't Dwarves slated to be after Empire? IIRC, after Ogres, the rumour guys were saying Empire/VC/Dwarves, but they didn't know the order.

roughly. It was a toss up between Dwarfs and WoC for a while, but appears to be leaning towards WoC is next and still quite a ways away. As expected, there'll be a big gap for 6th Ed 40k. Which is fine by me!

Dwarves.
IIRC I said that too when I pronounced Empire, and no one believed me then. Im not sure about Dwarves, but I say Dwarves indeed. Atleast soon.

I would think Dwarves or WoC, and I am actually hoping they hold off on Wood Elves for a while, I just sold mine and would be sorely tempted to get back into them again!

What I'd like to see:

DoC - really feel out of date and sneak by on wacky rules
WoC - have basically every ability and unit that exists in the game at costs they shouldn't be
Wood Elves - So they stop being such a joke

Things I'd like to see...

WoC and DoC mixed mark armies subject to the allies rules.

WoC war alters made less random and buffs made more specific - akin to new Empire alters.

WoC marauders given shooting options options - bow. Particularly for marauder cav.

For Wood Elves I'd like to see a stealth special rule along the lines of on a 1 the unit can't be seen, at more than 12" they can't be seen on a 1 or 2.

It seems most likely WoC are next

Honestly I'm not going to bother speculating though, GW has a tendency to pull stuff out of their butt. The word playtesters is not in their vocab

WoC release again, its only been like 2 or 3 years since their last update.
Wood Elves and Bretonnians really need the update and Dwarves are starting to look a bit on the shabby side

Dwarves are apparently due soon.

Wood Elves and Bretonnians are perhaps being delayed on account of the figures ranges need revamping.

I wouldn't think Dwarfs need an update (except if they mean to raise the points cost for all those damned war machines) they fare pretty well.
I'd say Wood Elves need an update and Brettonians too. I can't seem to remember how old the Lizardmen book is. Can anyone remember? Actually, I have only played once against them in 8th, how do they fare generally?

Lizardmen are near the top of the pack. Solid combat troops that never run and the most powerful non-special character wizards in the game.

Yeah they do, but the army specific items need revising, and maybe the magic/anti magic system, to make them a true 8th ed army - oh and a big sexy centre piece model

My biggest concern for the new fantasy books is the trend for every army to get a monster/chariot/huge thing plus monstrous cav or infantry. With an army like Dwarfs those things don't fit. Also, if Storm of Magic is any indication, they will give Dwarfs a magic phase with runelords/runesmiths casting spells. in the end, every army will be the same wizard/monsterfest where your only choice is looks.

Not unless they re-write the Dwarf personality. Dwarfs trust one thing : Dwarfs. Animated stone golems or steam powered clockwork golems, while cool, wouldn't fit the Dwarfs' established lore. That's why they don't have any type of cavalry and why things like gyrocopters are rare and looked at with distrust. Dwai-Marine'Va has the right ideas.

Maybe they will get some sort of Rune powered suit that is Monstrous Infantry.

Or they will get a big anologue to the Steam Tank.

Zepplin would be cool. A monster that is rubbish in combat but is devestating with shooting

You don't HAVE to use it.

If they TOUCH the Runes, someone will die

You can't have your entire weapon/armor/talisman/etc system based completely outside the current form. It makes no sense. It gets out of balance and can't be rectified when they make BRB changes. Dwarfs are clearly magic item users and creators, it's in the lore of practically every army book. I think you'll see something like VC gifts or Ogre Big names where they get a page of special runes and the standard 2 pages of magic items. Likewise, they will likely shift all the engineering runes to be upgrades directly to the models. Their item list might be more higher-point items. But runes are almost certainly going to go. There is no rationale for it to exist other than to continue to make the game more difficult to keep balanced.

I've heard some time ago, from a source who had a source... you know the story, that they were going to take some kind of metallic machine golem-like thingy that would operate on steam or something. Take with as much salt as you wish.

The rune system for weapons will likely change as they want people primarily using the magic items in the BRB. Weapon runes will go.

Also, word was, back when rumours were circling about VC, Dwarves and Ogres, they would be next due to having very different magic phases. GW wants every race to use every phase of the game, and wanted those 3 updated quickly.

Dwarves not only don't use the magic phase, but actively discourage the opponents use of the magic phase. Rumours were they'd be getting 'magic' in the form of runes like the Storm of Magic runes.
