Hey folks, just painting my first marine (on top of all, he's without helmet and half of his side is robotic with wires xD)

So I primed his head black, metal part i based with boltgun metal, and flesh part with dwarf flesh and afterwards tallarn flesh (spelling?) Gave bleached bone to the mouth and eye a bit, hoping for washers to do the trick.

The problem is I'm not sure which washer to use?! o.O
I've heard someone using greyphone sephia on flesh, but there's also boltgun metal here? And I'm worried how will baddad washer work on flesh too? Or should I hop to the store and get devlan mud wash or flesh washer?

Thx for any tips. As for finishing, I'm not sure how to highlight flesh with what.. If something like black washer will make his tan blacker, dwarf flesh would do the trick? As for metal, I'll be using chainmail (cause I don't have mithril, its almost the same with dab white?)

ogryn flesh is perfect for faces... but i would also like to make a suggestion about your order of paints used...

you first use dwarf flesh and then tallarn flesh, but tallarn flesh is a foundation and should go first for covering. then mix some dwarf flesh in there for a second coat, then give it a wash of ogryn flesh, highlight with the mix of TF and DF again, then add some bleached bone in the mix for the final highlights.

DONE!!

isnt that almost the same as i said?

anyway, you got a new follower on your website

*edit*
you can go into further details on faces, like a mix of badab black and asurmen blue wash in the eye area, bleached bone mixed with baal red wash over the lips, greyphone sephia line in the hairline, and if it has metal parts, wash it with asurmen blue where the metal touches the skin

also, if your painting chaos afflicted or just very pale faces, base with fortress grey, wash with green or blue, highlight with a mix of grey and elf flesh

that sort of stuff

Cool, thx guys.

Well, already finished the head piece. Wanted bit dark tan to work with which is why I placed dwarf before talarn, but now that I know its other way around, I'll keep it on my mind.

Also used greyphone sepia all over the head, turned out great, and repainted with dwarf flesh again to make out the shadows. Now all the remains is elf flesh for highlightings.

Biggest trouble I had was eyes and mouth ofc. If you consider this is my first marine I'm actually painting.

for the eyes, just keep them in the shadow and dont paint them. if your really fixed on painting them, only do a white dot on the outer side of the eye. the black/blue wash in the eyes will shade it nicely.

the mouth, if its an open mouth, use a dark red, or a mix of baal red with badab black. if its just the lips, baal red with elf flesh glazed over will do fine

Hmm, another quick one..

What if the eye(s) is/are exposed? Wouldn't shadowing make it look unatural? Cause eyes are sorta.. white? o.O
As for white dot on the outer side, its the same way as lenses?

So I gotta try baddab wash and asurmen wash on eyes.. Which one goes first? :s and what about black dot on white for eyes for example? It'll look like he has no pupil with all the washes?

The figure looks like he has open mouth, but with gnawing teeth. I did use greyphone wash (red?) but not baddab wash. First its red and black? How is that supposed to work? It'll make the bleached bone/skull white teeth all darky and muddy :s

greyphone sepia is yellowish, baal red is the (old) red wash from the GW series.

the reason why i suggest just shading the eyes is that from a 20cm distance no one will really notice them. and their really hard to do.

if you really, really wanna paint the eyes its a white line with a black dot, dont do a white circle because it will look like he's on crack and it will really ruin the face!

the black and asurmen blue washes are mixed for the shading of the eyes and the bags under his eyes.

for the mouth its a mix of red and black, because the mouth is supposed to be dark and not bloody red
for the teeth you can hit it with diluted bleached bone, dont do it white, it will look unnatural

oh and yeah, the white dot in the eyes (what i suggest in the just shade it method) is basically the same as with lenses. it will give the impression of the outside of the eye catching light but the rest being shaded
