Screaming Shining Spear

So, at my school we have this extended project we have to do, sort of like a mini university paper. Need sources and all that jazz. I personally chose to do an investigation, and the question that I chose to try and answer is "Can Video Games Be Considered Art?" So, one thing that I wanted to do was to get the opinions of several people on this debate, and so I went to the first gaming community that I could find, which is you guys. I prepared a small questionnaire that hopefully a few people will fill out so I can start getting some opinions up and running to put in my essay.
Feel free to PM me the answers, or just post them below. Also feel free to discuss the question itself. Always great to see different sides of a debate.
Name:
(If you want to be properly credited in the final essay. It’s hard to cite a username. )
1. What got you into video games?
2. What has your involvement in the video game industry, as a gamer or a game developer, been so far?
3. What is the definition of art to you, or do you not feel that there is one singular definition of art?
4. What are your feelings on the current debate on whether or not video games can be considered works of art?
5. What do you think is the main reason that video games aren’t taken seriously as an art form?
6. Do you think that the games themselves can be called art or only its components e.g. graphics, soundtrack, plot etc?
7. Do you feel that video games can be a medium for art e.g. Minecraft mods, pixel art, etc?
8. Do you think that the definition of art can be changed to accommodate controversial new mediums such as video games or interactive art installations?
9. Do you think that video games will have a lasting effect on future society, and will able to last until then?
10. Are there any applications of video games that you feel will be important in the future?
11. Do you think that new mediums of art in the future will have difficulty being accepted like video games currently?
Thanks very much guys.

1. What got you into video games? Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time + Goldeneye 007, been hooked ever since.
2. What has your involvement in the video game industry, as a gamer or a game developer, been so far? Consumer and cynic
3. What is the definition of art to you, or do you not feel that there is one singular definition of art? An expression of human experience through a medium. It's subjective, but I'd chose to have a minimum standard for what is art, since I don't like crap like a black bar on a piece of paper being called 'art.' If a five year old can pull it off I wouldn't call it art.
4. What are your feelings on the current debate on whether or not video games can be considered works of art? I do not qualify them as artistic in their current form.
5. What do you think is the main reason that video games aren’t taken seriously as an art form? Well, first off the older art mediums laugh at newer ones as a matter of course. They banned comic books from winning the Hugo Award, even though Sandman, the only comic to ever win, really did deserve it. The only comic to ever get real literary recognition was Watchmen, and Alan Moore is an ass.
6. Do you think that the games themselves can be called art or only its components e.g. graphics, soundtrack, plot etc? This is probably my beef with games being art. Art is a sum of its parts. While the individual elements of a game are artistic, for the game as a whole to qualify, imo they all need to function together. I've never played a game that has done such (though some have surely come close)
7. Do you feel that video games can be a medium for art e.g. Minecraft mods, pixel art, etc? Yes
8. Do you think that the definition of art can be changed to accommodate controversial new mediums such as video games or interactive art installations? That's going to depend on the definition being used. You'll get a different one from everyone you ask unless they're just spewing back something they read in a dictionary which really isn't very helpful cause it'll be to vague.
9. Do you think that video games will have a lasting effect on future society, and will able to last until then? I think they will have a lasting effect on popular culture and media.
10. Are there any applications of video games that you feel will be important in the future? Training simulators are already being used. I can always hope for a holodeck, ala Star Trek
11. Do you think that new mediums of art in the future will have difficulty being accepted like video games currently? Film had the same problem turn of the century. So did photography. Even today a debate goes on in the world of the visiul arts about what qualifies as art.

1. What got you into video games?
The games themselves I guess. I was quite young at the time that they really started getting popular and mmos etc started coming out (im 15) so its just the general everyone plays them, so why dont I.
2. What has your involvement in the video game industry, as a gamer or a game developer, been so far?
Im a casual gamer. I buy games, clock em (or atleast try lol) and move on to the next one. I have a 360, but dont have online yet (damn stingy parents!).
3. What is the definition of art to you, or do you not feel that there is one singular definition of art?
Dont feel that there is a singular definition. Differs from person to person. Some thing music is art, others think it isnt. Etc etc. The topic of your assigment is a good example.
4. What are your feelings on the current debate on whether or not video games can be considered works of art?
If they are memorable, have good graphics and are break-through game (e.g first to use new technology etc) Then yes they are art.
5. What do you think is the main reason that video games aren’t taken seriously as an art form?
The fact that so many people play them, and barely any refer to them as "art".
6. Do you think that the games themselves can be called art or only its components e.g. graphics, soundtrack, plot etc?
Both. If the graphics and the plot are bad, but the soundtrack is good how could any of it be art?
7. Do you feel that video games can be a medium for art e.g. Minecraft mods, pixel art, etc?
Definently. Playing, making and adding to Games are a great way to express yourself.
8. Do you think that the definition of art can be changed to accommodate controversial new mediums such as video games or interactive art installations?
Yes. Definitions change all the time, and these are a good reason to change them.
9. Do you think that video games will have a lasting effect on future society, and will able to last until then?
Yes. After all, if they wouldnt be able to last, they would have gone out of the picture long ago, but they are actually getting more popular.
10. Are there any applications of video games that you feel will be important in the future?
I dont know really, but who knows?
11. Do you think that new mediums of art in the future will have difficulty being accepted like video games currently?
Definently. New things always arent accepted straight away. Its just how people are.

1. What got you into video games?
My parents wouldn't let me play them... its that simple. I wanted that which I was not allowed to have.
2. What has your involvement in the video game industry, as a gamer or a game developer, been so far?
I give them my money, they give me games. Sometimes the games are good.
3. What is the definition of art to you, or do you not feel that there is one singular definition of art?
Art is something that expresses artists feelings and emotions. Very general I know, but hey, its 1:12AM
4. What are your feelings on the current debate on whether or not video games can be considered works of art?
They are art damnit!
5. What do you think is the main reason that video games aren’t taken seriously as an art form?
They are seen as kids toys, escapism from everyday life, the pastime of slackers, and sometimes dangerous.
6. Do you think that the games themselves can be called art or only its components e.g. graphics, soundtrack, plot etc?
The games themselves can be called art. However not all titles are deserving of that praise. Bioshock is art, Bulletstorm is horse gak on a stick.
7. Do you feel that video games can be a medium for art e.g. Minecraft mods, pixel art, etc?
Like creating art within a game which is also art? Sure!
8. Do you think that the definition of art can be changed to accommodate controversial new mediums such as video games or interactive art installations?
Eventually, we just have to wait for the old fogies’ to die so we can write the textbooks and opinion columns.
9. Do you think that video games will have a lasting effect on future society, and will able to last until then?
Only as far as innovations go, video games tend to age very poorly. Unless a title was the first to do a new thing very well it will probably be forgotten. Except for "Postal/manhunt/Rapelay" fox news will talk about those games until no one will listen anymore, then they'll keep talking.
10. Are there any applications of video games that you feel will be important in the future?
I could see them making some high tech medical training sims, in fact I think those would be very useful.
11. Do you think that new mediums of art in the future will have difficulty being accepted like video games currently?
Oh defiantly, I will probably be one of those who waves my fist at the virtual reality dating sims while decrying the "downward spiral of today’s youth" but they'll be accepted eventually.
Just kidding, if they ever make a virtual sex type game I am going to wear the heck out of the codpiece attachments

Too many people dwell on the semantics, its sad.

Because gamer's primary goal is to have fun, to appreciate the rest is secondary.

It took some time, but being a bookish kid with a dad that had a thing for computers it was inevitable. I started with a hand-me-down NES from another family and Duck Hunt/Mario. Shortly after my mom was hooked and we got a SNES and a Genesis, which lead to several years of Super Mario 3 and Sonic. However, I didn't really get into games until the 64 PS1 era, with PC gaming really beginning with Red Alert and Interstate '76 (prior to that it was just random DOS games).
Swordwind wrote:

I know a couple people working their way up the ladder, that's it though.
Swordwind wrote:

Art is expression that is intended to evoke an emotional response.
Swordwind wrote:
4. What are your feelings on the current debate on whether or not video games can be considered works of art?
The debate is basically stodgy and or elitist (in the negative sense) people trying to maintain the elevation of the classical arts as arts.
Swordwind wrote:
5. What do you think is the main reason that video games aren’t taken seriously as an art form?
Its much the same as music. Lots of them are really, really crappy. But, unlike music, there is no real "classic" period of video games. And what classic period there does exist is largely dominated by crap.
Also, some games are not intended to be expressive, or artistic in any way.
Swordwind wrote:
6. Do you think that the games themselves can be called art or only its components e.g. graphics, soundtrack, plot etc?
Games are an art in and of themselves. But I think not all games are art. Some are, but many art not in much the way that not all sound is music.
Swordwind wrote:
7. Do you feel that video games can be a medium for art e.g. Minecraft mods, pixel art, etc?
Sure. They basically have to be if they're art of any sort.

Of course. All definitions can be changed.

Definitely. My parents remember Lawrence Welk, I remember Mario.

Mostly education, something like Oregon Trail but better developed. They're also good for teaching basic computer skills. I learned how to touch type, primarily, by way of multiplayer gaming.

Yes, the same thing happened with motion pictures.

Name: Nate T. (That's as far as I'll go) 1. What got you into video games? Star War: The Clone Wars (older game) on the PS2 many years back. 2. What has your involvement in the video game industry, as a gamer or a game developer, been so far? Just a casual Xbox 360 gamer and even more casual PC gamer. 3. What is the definition of art to you, or do you not feel that there is one singular definition of art? Art is a form of expression, in the same respect that music is, yet there cannot be one definition for art. 4. What are your feelings on the current debate on whether or not video games can be considered works of art? Although I highly doubt most video games are art, some have been created purely for the richness of environments and emotional feel. Some could be considered art for this. 5. What do you think is the main reason that video games aren’t taken seriously as an art form? Video games are mostly created to entertain, not to express, although I have seen exceptions. 6. Do you think that the games themselves can be called art or only its components e.g. graphics, soundtrack, plot etc? What else would they be called art for? Maybe the mood the game sets, like the mood a painting can give you could make it art. 7. Do you feel that video games can be a medium for art e.g. Minecraft mods, pixel art, etc? Of course they can. What would then be the difference between the game (Minecraft, for example), and canvas and paint? They both become the mediums for expression. 8. Do you think that the definition of art can be changed to accommodate controversial new mediums such as video games or interactive art installations? Why should the definition of art change? All we must do is seek games that fit the picture. 9. Do you think that video games will have a lasting effect on future society, and will able to last until then? Video games are already a form of major media, and have exploded in popularity more rapidly than anything else. No doubt about it, they will most likely last a long time. 10. Are there any applications of video games that you feel will be important in the future? There might be in the future (military simulations, pilot sims, etc...), but not in the present day. 11. Do you think that new mediums of art in the future will have difficulty being accepted like video games currently? Yes. They might, like video games, given the time.

1. What got you into video games?
My father used to play DOOM with me. He bought me a few computer games at 6, and I've been playing since then.
2. What has your involvement in the video game industry, as a gamer or a game developer, been so far?
I went to PAX east and filled out a few questionnaires.. That's it for what I've done in the Industry.
3. What is the definition of art to you, or do you not feel that there is one singular definition of art?
Art is a physical expression of the mind. However, the definition of art is always in flux.
4. What are your feelings on the current debate on whether or not video games can be considered works of art?
Anyone who thinks Video Games are not art is either an idiot or Ebert. Video Games are interactive art mediums.
5. What do you think is the main reason that video games aren’t taken seriously as an art form?
The stigma of video games causing violence.
6. Do you think that the games themselves can be called art or only its components e.g. graphics, soundtrack, plot etc?
Every part of a game can be called Art.
7. Do you feel that video games can be a medium for art e.g. Minecraft mods, pixel art, etc?
Yes.
8. Do you think that the definition of art can be changed to accommodate controversial new mediums such as video games or interactive art installations?
Like I said, art's definition is always in flux.
9. Do you think that video games will have a lasting effect on future society, and will able to last until then?
Video Games will last until the very end. It's a way to escape from reality. It's really great.
10. Are there any applications of video games that you feel will be important in the future?
US Military training simulators will be very important in the near future. Simulators are really just more high tech video games.
11. Do you think that new mediums of art in the future will have difficulty being accepted like video games currently?
I do. Art is a very snobbish thing, and as long as prudes exist, we will always have a hard time with getting any new expression to be called art.

1. It was a family event in the evenings as we would play super mario 3 and super mario world.
2. Mostly a gamer but I have done some basic design work.
3. Art is the expression of emotions, onto a medium where an emotional response is desired from the target.
4. As any type of entertainment can be considered an art then I would definently consider video games an art. What quality of art it is is dependent on the game itself.
5. I would agree that the portrayl of causing violence hurts gaming in some people's eyes. It is also hurt in that it is not a traditional art form like drawing, painting, or acting.
6. A game is a combination of graphics, soundtrack, plot, etc. Now while these things do not define the game as a whole these are the tools that the game is created with. An ocean being painted on a pallete is not just a flat blue but rather a combination of blues, greens, and whites.
7. Absolutely yes. Can a copy of a famous painting be included in another drawing or painting?
8. The definition art inherently changes since it requires an emotional response. Anyone else get angry at the thalmoor in skyrim? Of course they did that was the point an emotional response.
9. Again yes. People have always been looking for new escapes from their daily lives. The collisium in rome was designed to destract the people from their daily lives. That is why they were called the gladiatorial games. Video games are simmilar in that they are escapes that make use of current technology.
10. Video gamers already have some of the higher hand eye cordination and better attention to detail than most people. Translating these can have importances, plus the closer to reality we get with the graphics the more likely simulators will be introduced. The ROTC a friend went to had a simulator for an army humvee where the floor would move and bounce as you got hit.
11. Unfortunately yes. Getting new things to be considered art will always be difficult since most want the classics and refuse to see anything new as art.
I'll PM you my name with title of this thread as the subject.

1. What got you into video games?
A childhood friend of mine that was really into gaming, I had a playstation one and two but I was never allowed any decent games.
2. What has your involvement in the video game industry, as a gamer or a game developer, been so far?
I'm a rabid fan of Guild Wars 2 and have had conversations with some of the developers at conventions, that's about as much interaction with the industry as I get.
3. What is the definition of art to you, or do you not feel that there is one singular definition of art?
Art is an expression of an idea or emotion that causes an emotional response in someone else, it could be anything really.
4. What are your feelings on the current debate on whether or not video games can be considered works of art?
Videogames can definitely be art, for example I'd say Bastion is art as every aspect of the game comes together as a cohesive piece that evokes a variety of emotions.
5. What do you think is the main reason that video games aren’t taken seriously as an art form?
Because it's a new medium and video-games were initially nothing more than toys for children.
6. Do you think that the games themselves can be called art or only its components e.g. graphics, soundtrack, plot etc?
Some games (such as Bastion) are art because all the components come together as a cohesive piece, other games (such as Bioshock) have soundtrack I'd call art and settings I'd call art but the game itself I wouldn't call art.
7. Do you feel that video games can be a medium for art e.g. Minecraft mods, pixel art, etc?
Yes.
8. Do you think that the definition of art can be changed to accommodate controversial new mediums such as video games or interactive art installations?
I don't think the definition of art (in the broadest sense) doesn't need changing but yes it could be changed.
9. Do you think that video games will have a lasting effect on future society, and will able to last until then?
Yes definitely.
10. Are there any applications of video games that you feel will be important in the future?
Education and entertainment are probably the two most important applications of video-games.
11. Do you think that new mediums of art in the future will have difficulty being accepted like video games currently?
No doubt, people as a collective hate change.

Name: Josh Craig (If you want to be properly credited in the final essay. It’s hard to cite a username. ) 1. What got you into video games? My older cousin got me into video gaming with the original Nintendo. He was like an older brother to me, so naturally I caught on. 2. What has your involvement in the video game industry, as a gamer or a game developer, been so far? Just buying and playing video games 3. What is the definition of art to you, or do you not feel that there is one singular definition of art? Art to me is any form of expression, whether is be music, painting, or video game design 4. What are your feelings on the current debate on whether or not video games can be considered works of art? I think video games are most definately art. The amount of time, expression, and feeling that goes into gaming any more makes it one for sure 5. What do you think is the main reason that video games aren’t taken seriously as an art form? The amount of thought, work, and expression that goes into games anymore - they're not just toys for kids, but expression and entertainment like paintings and music 6. Do you think that the games themselves can be called art or only its components e.g. graphics, soundtrack, plot etc? No, those are all pieces that bring the art together 7. Do you feel that video games can be a medium for art e.g. Minecraft mods, pixel art, etc? For sure 8. Do you think that the definition of art can be changed to accommodate controversial new mediums such as video games or interactive art installations? For sure. It's a form of expression, right? 9. Do you think that video games will have a lasting effect on future society, and will able to last until then? Yes. They're just like movies or TV shows any more. The way past video games have paved the way for future game and technology prove it. Look at 3DTV, Blu Ray, and HDTV. I bet a lot of those techs have plenty of thanks to give to the video game community. 10. Are there any applications of video games that you feel will be important in the future? Possibly. Wii Fit and other versions could helpe people with rehibilitation of injuries. Or they could be used to train people for their jobs? I have a sister with Asperger's, and playing video games online gave her social interaction that she really needed. It also helped with her speaking skills. 11. Do you think that new mediums of art in the future will have difficulty being accepted like video games currently? For sure. That's just how every new type of medium is. Look at the rock music...it was considered crazy and nothing but trash, but now is considered a staple in modern world.

1. What got you into video games?
Competitive play with my Sister playing Super Mario Bros. for the Nintendo.
2. What has your involvement in the video game industry, as a gamer or a game developer, been so far?
Just a consumer and play Madden tournaments from time to time
3. What is the definition of art to you, or do you not feel that there is one singular definition of art?
Art is a wide range and it varies from person to person, the debate and ideas are way to lengthy to post here.
4. What are your feelings on the current debate on whether or not video games can be considered works of art?
If movies and splashed on paint can be considered art, why not video games? Some video games really do seem like master pieces with the design and aesthetics that go into a game design.
Think of everything that had to go into a game to make it enjoyable. Sound tracks, visuals, designs, entire worlds, story lines. I've once heard a Hollywood director call video games the new books of this century. I think that is true to various extents.
5. What do you think is the main reason that video games aren’t taken seriously as an art form?
Same reason why anything why certain ideas or subjects are not taken seriously.
People don't understand it, don't like, afraid of it, etc.
6. Do you think that the games themselves can be called art or only its components e.g. graphics, soundtrack, plot etc?
I think you can divorce various aspects and still call it art. I have quite a few video game soundtracks on my iPod and some video games songs/tunes are iconic to the extent that orchestras perform symphonies using songs from games. I personally believe that you miss the experience of the game as it was intended by separating visuals from the music but all aspects can be classified as art,
7. Do you feel that video games can be a medium for art e.g. Minecraft mods, pixel art, etc?
Already as been. Pixel art has already crossed over into many other industries, Honda has a commercial where they use head lights to make images (some concept as pixels), WWE has released shirts with Pixel art, I've seen grocery stores set up packs of soda to make pixel art.
8. Do you think that the definition of art can be changed to accommodate controversial new mediums such as video games or interactive art installations?
As with everything that was controversial, yes.
9. Do you think that video games will have a lasting effect on future society, and will able to last until then?
As long as game companies provide games with stimulating adventures, providing new gimmicks in games, dynamic characters I think video games will continue to expand and get bigger, it's already bigger than Hollywood. It has created a culture or is part of culture. Only thing I see killing video games is a political/moral crusade.
10. Are there any applications of video games that you feel will be important in the future?
Don't know. Video game interaction seems to be big, especially those who were not into video games before the Wii and what not. As much as I hate video game interaction.
11. Do you think that new mediums of art in the future will have difficulty being accepted like video games currently?
Acceptance will always be an issue when there is something new comparing itself to something already established.
Are video games art?
Is Rock n Roll Music?
etc.
Not the most helpful as definition of art can very from person to person.

1. I don't entirely remember, but I think it was the possibility of discovering entirely new places and worlds, as well as being able to do things that I could never accomplish in real life. As such, sci fi and fantasy games are my favourite.
2. I started videogaming when I was six with a gameboy colour. Been hooked ever since passing through PS2 to PS3.
3. Art to me is something creative that looks or sounds nice, even tastes nice for an "artistic meal". I don't really consider modern art, eg. a red block on a white background to be art. Sorry if I offend anyone.
4. They are more or less. Great looking games with a good storyline are pieces of art. Of course, there are the worse games which are art, but just plain bad art. Not all art is good after all.
5. Well, firstly there's all the people who despise videogames and view them as taking children captive and turning them into fat useless adults who will spend the remainder of their lives in virtual worlds. The reason I think so many people dislike videogames and do not treat it as art is because its not an art form they are used to or acknowledge. You can only get to know something so well if you actually experience it, so if people who dislike videogames don't play and aren't attracted by the idea, I doubt they will ever change their mind about videogames.
6. The game in its integrity is art. The story line like that of a book. The graphics and sound like live arts such as drama. it would be unfair to call something art when played in a stage and the same thing not art when voiced over by actors.
7. That's a bitt harder already. I think that certain free creation videogames such as minecraft as great for those who wish to create art, but I think it would be all the more impressive if they actually built the things they spend so much time on in Minecraft. I'm not a fan of these games, and though I am impressed at their achievements, I think it would be harder to classify that as art than the videogame itself.
8. I do, but then there will always be someone complaining that lines of code isn't art.
9. Depends how far into the future. I think it will probably last until the apocalypse or until they become too dangerous. When simulations become too realistic and they start having an immense negative effect on those who take part in it.
10. Videogames are essentially simulations of a reality, science fiction or realistic. I believe that a sufficiently developed videogame has plenty of applications in the future, notably for training simulations like those that already exist for pilots as an example.
11. I'm sure there will always be opposition to the development of new mediums for art, but as it is hard to imagine a new art medium in the present, I'll just stick the opinion that there will be opposition to change every time it occurs.
Can I ask, what kind of program are you doing? I also had to do a sort of mini university paper for my high school.

Name: Den G. R (If you want to be properly credited in the final essay. It’s hard to cite a username. ) 1. What got you into video games? Something on the C16, manic miner possibly, older style games. Sonic on the Megadrive was probably the first game that made me consider where the industry might go. 2. What has your involvement in the video game industry, as a gamer or a game developer, been so far? Followed it for nearly twenty three years, have owned nearly every major system released in that period, except the Atari Jaguar and the PS3. 3. What is the definition of art to you, or do you not feel that there is one singular definition of art? Totally subjective, if you ask one hundred people, its just as likely you'll get one hundred answers. As to me, I can't disguise my disgust for the turner prize and all it stands for. 4. What are your feelings on the current debate on whether or not video games can be considered works of art? They are getting close, I think it won't be long before some is seen as such. It seems a common consideration for art is the ability to stir emotion, based on this fact, I think soem Games have potentially already crossed that line. 5. What do you think is the main reason that video games aren’t taken seriously as an art form? Because by many folks they are still seen as toys, only kids actually apparently play games, hence why Australia has had issues with 18 rated games for years. Until the media and others start to recognise that adults actually play games it will continue to struggle. 6. Do you think that the games themselves can be called art or only its components e.g. graphics, soundtrack, plot etc? Movies have been classed as art, for plot, the cinematics etc, Games will be judged in a similar way. Its not the same as a painting, but you can see how it could be looked upon as some form of art. 7. Do you feel that video games can be a medium for art e.g. Minecraft mods, pixel art, etc? Minecraft seems a literal art form already, other games have walked a similar line, and I can only see more from this kind of thing in the future. 8. Do you think that the definition of art can be changed to accommodate controversial new mediums such as video games or interactive art installations? I think in a world where a messy bed is considered art, then that question is not even needed, videogames will be considered art in some respect eventually, or certain games at the very least will. 9. Do you think that video games will have a lasting effect on future society, and will able to last until then? I think they will in their own way, not sure about being classed as art or not. Some folks hunt for older games now, old Pacman machines from the eighties and Space Invaders can sell for a lot. No matter the medium, I am sure you will always find collectors interested in it. 10. Are there any applications of video games that you feel will be important in the future? Training mods seems the most likely. The US Army has already started looking at applications in this field, I believe I read reccently that the FBI was also looking into it. I think training sims and the like will become very popular. 11. Do you think that new mediums of art in the future will have difficulty being accepted like video games currently? Art seems to be more about talking your way to success than actual artistic ability these days, so as long as they are folks willing to tell you how awesome this 'new' art is and why you should buy it, it will find a way. Its the mediums that get looked down upon for not having folks champion them in the art circles that struggle, even after being around for years, such as Comic books, Sci-fi art and the like. How something like a Larry Elmore Dragon pic is laughable to seome folks, who in the same breath can't wait to buy a splatter of dots on canvas, is beyond me.

1. What got you into video games?
a Atari VCS 2600 for X-mas...
2. What has your involvement in the video game industry, as a gamer or a game developer, been so far?
financial support, as a consumer of games and machines and equipment
3. What is the definition of art to you, or do you not feel that there is one singular definition of art?
no singular definition
4. What are your feelings on the current debate on whether or not video games can be considered works of art?
modern video games cannot hope to be considered art
5. What do you think is the main reason that video games aren’t taken seriously as an art form?
they are entertainment, and nowadays so many are involved in development that any artist of another art form would object. Plus they are cash-cows now and art isn't part of the model of the main companies..
6. Do you think that the games themselves can be called art or only its components e.g. graphics, soundtrack, plot etc?
components maybe.
7. Do you feel that video games can be a medium for art e.g. Minecraft mods, pixel art, etc?
no
8. Do you think that the definition of art can be changed to accommodate controversial new mediums such as video games or interactive art installations?
change whose definition?
9. Do you think that video games will have a lasting effect on future society, and will able to last until then?
they have an effect yet, and they may have one in the future.
10. Are there any applications of video games that you feel will be important in the future?
recycling of old games. New ideas are rare and as the budgets rise the will to risk anything decreases.
11. Do you think that new mediums of art in the future will have difficulty being accepted like video games currently?
yes

What is the definition of art to you, or do you not feel that there is one singular definition of art? Something that evokes an emotion through visual, tactile or aural stimulation... 4. What are your feelings on the current debate on whether or not video games can be considered works of art? They are art but like other forms of art they have some really crap examples... 5. What do you think is the main reason that video games aren’t taken seriously as an art form? They are new and because of their main consumer 6. Do you think that the games themselves can be called art or only its components e.g. graphics, soundtrack, plot etc? Both, the soundtrack and graphics can be art by themselves but put together it can also be called an art. 7. Do you feel that video games can be a medium for art e.g. Minecraft mods, pixel art, etc? Yes. I think that the proliferation of creative modes in games has greatly increased this. 8. Do you think that the definition of art can be changed to accommodate controversial new mediums such as video games or interactive art installations? Yes. I believe there is currently a movement to do so but a game is not far removed from a book, film or a painting. 9. Do you think that video games will have a lasting effect on future society, and will able to last until then? Maybe but they will have the be played by other audiences but eventually they will be. 10. Are there any applications of video games that you feel will be important in the future? Not that i can think of but there probably are... 11. Do you think that new mediums of art in the future will have difficulty being accepted like video games currently? Legendary Master of the Chapter

Name: Cameron B. G.
(If you want to be properly credited in the final essay. It’s hard to cite a username. )
1. What got you into video games?
I heard about got interested about it. First game I played was star fox. And I still play them.
2. What has your involvement in the video game industry, as a gamer or a game developer, been so far?
I am a gamer wishing to become a Video Game Designer. I am also a Critic, also a map maker and I also made games for a bit.
3. What is the definition of art to you, or do you not feel that there is one singular definition of art?
Art is expression of the person drawing or showing pieceing something. Like a Tricker who does tricks because he has feelings that he cannot express vocally. There is no singular definition of art like many philisophies it is up to that person to find the answer for themselves.
4. What are your feelings on the current debate on whether or not video games can be considered works of art?
Video Games are an art with their graphic design and of their storyline, they can't be changed by court order, I firmly believe that video games should not be altered because they are an art form. Each game has an underlying message like in stories, and books. If you change the book's message its not going to be the same book after your done with changing it. This applies to just about everything.
5. What do you think is the main reason that video games aren’t taken seriously as an art form?
Because of violence, sex, and discredited by major media groups. I mean the media is worse than video games and they paint the world black and white, it isn't the Video Game developers fault the media paints gaming badly. Its the media's. This is very similar to what happened to comic books.
6. Do you think that the games themselves can be called art or only its components e.g. graphics, soundtrack, plot etc?
Its mostly components and a combination of all them that makes it a master piece. It takes alot of talent to pull together an entire game series for people. And sometimes people don't accept or acknowledge the hard work that went into it.
7. Do you feel that video games can be a medium for art e.g. Minecraft mods, pixel art, etc?
Yes. Its expression its trying to entertain people.
8. Do you think that the definition of art can be changed to accommodate controversial new mediums such as video games or interactive art installations?
Refer to no. 2. There is a new meaning of art in every single person. So yes.
9. Do you think that video games will have a lasting effect on future society, and will able to last until then?
Yes. video games are the future for us all.
10. Are there any applications of video games that you feel will be important in the future?
Well computer devices and technology will become faster paced and more efficient. The world will be better.
11. Do you think that new mediums of art in the future will have difficulty being accepted like video games currently?
Yes. It will be difficult but it will take time for everyone to deal with the problems that occur from it. Everything that comes out the first few weeks everyone hates it, but over time people start to accept it and start to love it. That is the example i have used for just about everything.

Decrepit Dakkanaut
|
Name: Chris de M 1. What got you into video games? What gets anyone into video games? The allure of a parallel universe, or a different universe entirely; the chance to ignore your own problems for a while, or to relieve stress by taking it out of pixels rather than people; living life through the eyes, ears, and iron sights of someone completely different; and lots more. 2. What has your involvement in the video game industry, as a gamer or a game developer, been so far? As mostly a gamer, my involvement has mainly been buying games, but I dabble in modding when given the tools and tutorials, such as using Bethesda's ubiquitous construction sets or built-in map makers like that of Age of Empires 2. 3. What is the definition of art to you, or do you not feel that there is one singular definition of art? There is no singular definition of art; websites such as deviantART display this. I'm a casual writer, hobbyist, and gamer, and literature, making and painting models, and games can all be considered art. In the end, it comes down to opinion, since the definition of something like art will always be subjective; modern art is a fantastic example of this largely because there's a large divide between those who see it as art and those who see it as nothing more than a waste of time, effort, and money. In the end, if you feel it's art, then it's art. 4. What are your feelings on the current debate on whether or not video games can be considered works of art? Like I said before, it's subjective. Games aren't just things you play on, they have to be graphically pleasing, and graphic design is considered art by a lot of people, including myself. Since without graphical enhancement, we'd all be stuck playing Pong, games have to be art; they are made up of it after all. 5. What do you think is the main reason that video games aren’t taken seriously as an art form? Because people see them as mundane. They only see the plot and aim of the game, like shooting people or questing, yet they fail to recognise the storylines artfully woven into it, without which the game would have no basis for being. They fail to recognise the graphical detail that goes into it, how people have studied the environment and meticulously created the finest representation of it possible; how much thought goes into how the sunlight penetrates the leafy canopy above you in the game in the exact same way as it does outside it? How the trees sway in a breeze you ignore because you're busy trying to decide which weapon does the most damage? The true to life environments that you're chasing someone through? I'd say very little. If people focussed on what is around them in the game instead of what they have to do, they would appreciate it more. Paintings are the focus, and are therefore easily called art, but games have many, many different elements, some of which are easily forgotten or ignored, but are no less important because of it, some even verging on being vital. 6. Do you think that the games themselves can be called art or only its components e.g. graphics, soundtrack, plot etc? I'd argue that they can be called art themselves, because they are made up of it. You have the plot, the graphics, the soundtrack, what is there left? Nothing. Even the coding behind it can be called art. How can something made up solely of art, not be art? 7. Do you feel that video games can be a medium for art e.g. Minecraft mods, pixel art, etc? Of course, you just named two excellent ways in which they already are mediums for art. You can search Youtube for videos made by dedicated people in games, such as things that utilise MMOs to create synchronised in-game dancing to songs, or using screenshots and video clips to create a story. 8. Do you think that the definition of art can be changed to accommodate controversial new mediums such as video games or interactive art installations? Does it need to be changed? As I said, the definition of art is subjective, if somebody doesn't see something as art then it isn't art to them. I don't see a lot of modern art as art, but that's just my opinion, and if a definition of 'art' listed modern art as being a part of it, I still wouldn't see it as art. 9. Do you think that video games will have a lasting effect on future society, and will able to last until then? That's a bit vague, when is 'then'? Future society is in 10 seconds, and it can damn sure last until then. But on the hole, yes, I do think they'll have a lasting effect; video games bring people together in MMOs; they can inspire people; they can provide much needed escape from the rigmarole of modern life; games aren't a trend, they're here for a very long time. 10. Are there any applications of video games that you feel will be important in the future? Combat training is one; games such as Call of Duty and Battlefield are constantly evolving to be more in line with real-life combat in so far as to provide realistic settings, realistic actions, realistic firing etc. Blow that up to a larger scale and incorporate the rapidly growing and improving motion sensing equipment avialable, and you have a combat simulator. I could probably think of more, but i've drawn a blank currently. 11. Do you think that new mediums of art in the future will have difficulty being accepted like video games currently? Of course; so long as people have their own definition of art, and stick by it.

Mandorallen turned back toward the insolently sneering baron. 'My Lord,' The great knight said distantly, 'I find thy face apelike and thy form misshapen. Thy beard, moreover, is an offence against decency, resembling more closely the scabrous fur which doth decorate the hinder portion of a mongrel dog than a proper adornment for a human face. Is it possibly that thy mother, seized by some wild lechery, did dally at some time past with a randy goat?' - Mimbrate Knight Protector Mandorallen.

1. What got you into video games? Mostly curiosity, I mean a lil grey box(PS1) that could provide untold hours of interactive entertainment. The actual game tho was the original Crash Bandicoot.
2. What has your involvement in the video game industry, as a gamer or a game developer, been so far? I would say Im in between. I have done a small amount of game development but nothing for actual sale, more just testing my skills.
3. What is the definition of art to you, or do you not feel that there is one singular definition of art? I don't believe there is a definition, as art is different to everybody. Art that appeals to me is something that can convey a story whether it be TV, games or even still pictures.
4. What are your feelings on the current debate on whether or not video games can be considered works of art? Given my above comment, then yes they are.
5. What do you think is the main reason that video games aren’t taken seriously as an art form? Tough question, I really have no clue.
6. Do you think that the games themselves can be called art or only its components e.g. graphics, soundtrack, plot etc? I would say both, each component is an art in its own right and the joining of said components is the masterpiece.
7. Do you feel that video games can be a medium for art e.g. Minecraft mods, pixel art, etc? Yes.
8. Do you think that the definition of art can be changed to accommodate controversial new mediums such as video games or interactive art installations? Yup.
9. Do you think that video games will have a lasting effect on future society, and will able to last until then? indeed, I dont see games dying out anytime soon.
10. Are there any applications of video games that you feel will be important in the future? Teaching games may well be important, a fair few people learn by doing and as such games can teach without having to deal with certain consequences, plane simulators are a good example here I think.
11. Do you think that new mediums of art in the future will have difficulty being accepted like video games currently? Potentially, everything usually has a period of difficulty.

1. What got you into video games?
A friend with a Game Boy advance which I was insanely jealous of. That, and Pokemon.
2. What has your involvement in the video game industry, as a gamer or a game developer, been so far?
Often a gamer, occasionally a game maker.
3. What is the definition of art to you, or do you not feel that there is one singular definition of art?
Art is what you say it is, and is everything in a way.
4. What are your feelings on the current debate on whether or not video games can be considered works of art?
A massive package of semi-existent data, configured in a way to create virtual worlds and bring joy to humanity is more are than a painting.
5. What do you think is the main reason that video games aren’t taken seriously as an art form?
Blind traditionalism and ignorance.
6. Do you think that the games themselves can be called art or only its components e.g. graphics, soundtrack, plot etc?
Games as a whole are art, as are many of their components.
7. Do you feel that video games can be a medium for art e.g. Minecraft mods, pixel art, etc?
Absolutely, no question.
8. Do you think that the definition of art can be changed to accommodate controversial new mediums such as video games or interactive art installations?
It already is being. Many robot artists exist, such as Stelarc from Australia, and Christian Ristow. Some games are often seen as art even now, such as the bit.trip series.
9. Do you think that video games will have a lasting effect on future society, and will able to last until then?
Video games are here to stay, but the line between reality and "games" will be tested in the future.
10. Are there any applications of video games that you feel will be important in the future?
I have heard of a theory of fighting virtual wars, so much less messy than the current system.
11. Do you think that new mediums of art in the future will have difficulty being accepted like video games currently?
I don't know where art has left to go, but judging by what is currently seen as modern art, I hope any new media replace the current ones.

1. I was homeschooled and very bored. Then I found "Dark Forces".
2. Playing whatever looks interesting, and raging at Call of Duty.
3. Art is whatever peaks our imagination. It can take on many forms, and video games are one of those forms.
4. Video games can be works of art, it just depends on the story and the complexity of said story. That said, Call of Duty is not art.
5. Violence.
6. No, all of those add to the overall artistic quality.
7. Of course.
8. Sure, why not.
9. Most definitely. I highly doubt people will doing something more productive when they're bored.
10. Keeping people from dying of boredom.
11. Yeah, some people are pretty weird, and are into weird things that might be equally "offensive" as video games.

1. What got you into video games?
The soundtracks, F-Zero X comes readily to mind
2. What has your involvement in the video game industry, as a gamer or a game developer, been so far?
Well i have contributed a fair bit of money into World of Tanks, other then that im just a casual PS3 and SNES gamer
3. What is the definition of art to you, or do you not feel that there is one singular definition of art?
I feel that if i can draw it/ draw it better it aint art, then again art is an expression of the soul (thats as deep as il get on this)
4. What are your feelings on the current debate on whether or not video games can be considered works of art?
Well i find that older games are more so works of art, they just work as a whole really well, a game i would like to use as an example would be F-Zero X, its a old N-64 racing game where the high octane pace of the races where death is possible is complimented beautifully by a hard as nails metal-rock hybrid style of music
5. What do you think is the main reason that video games aren’t taken seriously as an art form?
To hazard a guess its that they get released as buggy piles of filth with patches being released on day one that its out. Two games that i think i could take seriously as forms of art would be; Skyrim for the graphics and immersion factor, and Halo 3 for the angelic sounding music that pairs wonderfully with the sci-fi factor of the game
6. Do you think that the games themselves can be called art or only its components e.g. graphics, soundtrack, plot etc?
Hells yeah!
7. Do you feel that video games can be a medium for art e.g. Minecraft mods, pixel art, etc?
Definatly! I know that there is a youtube video kickin round that is a picture of Dhovakin on the cover of skyrim done in minecraft, the picture takes up the whole bloody map, looks textured (slightly 3D-ish) and is made out of stone and gravel from what i can tell! and you cant tell the difference between the box art and the minecraft work of art
8. Do you think that the definition of art can be changed to accommodate controversial new mediums such as video games or interactive art installations?
Given enuf time i would say yes
9. Do you think that video games will have a lasting effect on future society, and will able to last until then?
Depends if the quality of the games become copy paste with one or two differences or just goes on a genuine downhill trend in terms of quality and reliability! Hell i can dropkick one of my SNES cartridges and they still work (do not try this at home, i just hate the old spiderman game with a fiery passion) , but so help me god if i do that to Call of Duty or any other disk game it will shatter into a pointy mess!
10. Are there any applications of video games that you feel will be important in the future?
Thats a difficult one to answer as i think we already have the most important applications which would be simulators
11. Do you think that new mediums of art in the future will have difficulty being accepted like video games currently?
Yes, as we already have nimrods spewing that filth about video games being evil and corrupting the youth

1. My computer. Since I was 4 years Ive been playing games, starting with Sesame Street. Honest.
2. My involvement is mostly buying games. Or downloading them for free, wich isnt a possitive thing.
3. There is no single definition of art.
4. They can be viewed as art. Just look at some of them.
5. They are new and scary. Thats the only thing: its new, and mostly young people play it.
6. They can be called art.
7. Yes. there are video games that are more art then game, and ye, minecraft mods can be too. But I havent seen much of those..
8. Well yes, why not?
9. Yes. It will have effect. Many, many teenagers play videogames. Ots the new thing in life, like television once was. Videogames can be a way of telling a story.
10. The Cloud will be big.
11. Now thats a question. It depends on the form of the art. If it looks like art, they will have no problem with it. However, if it looks entirly new, they will at first hate it. In the same way as they are saying that games are the reason behind bloodbaths. Wich is nonsense, ofcourse.

7. Do you feel that video games can be a medium for art e.g. Minecraft mods, pixel art, etc? Yes, they very well can be
8. Do you think that the definition of art can be changed to accommodate controversial new mediums such as video games or interactive art installations? No, i believe the definition of art will and should stay the same
9. Do you think that video games will have a lasting effect on future society, and will able to last until then? Yes, as long as we have technology, video games will always be around but in different forms
10. Are there any applications of video games that you feel will be important in the future? Under the broad category of video games yes, some applications will be important. But some educational games are, by definition, video games.
11. Do you think that new mediums of art in the future will have difficulty being accepted like video games currently? No, new mediums of art shouldn't have much problem joining in with the current technology and video games. Automatically Appended Next Post: thenoobbomb wrote:Name: Steven
