North of your position

Aye, those days were awsome. Then came the Harry Potter and Lego games.. Then came the Playstation 2.. And then came the interest for gaming magazines.. Then came the xbox360. And here I am

Inside your mind, corrupting the pathways

Name: SilverMK2

1. What got you into video games?
My dad had a C64 with some old (well, they were not that old at that point) games on it like boulderdash and raid over moscow on it... Started playing them between playing with other toys. Progressed on to PC gaming a few years later when we got our first PC and carried on being a PC gamer (even though I had an x-box for a few years I was still definately a PC gamer) until I went to university and got a 360 - then that became my main game system.

2. What has your involvement in the video game industry, as a gamer or a game developer, been so far?
Beta tested a few games, submittted some artwork and stuff to a couple of games, some fan map making for Unreal Tournament and some other games. Mostly just a player.

3. What is the definition of art to you, or do you not feel that there is one singular definition of art?
Art is something that has been created which promotes some emotional response.

4. What are your feelings on the current debate on whether or not video games can be considered works of art?
See 3 - games can as much be art as when some dozy woman sleeps in a bed for a few days and then puts it on display. At least it takes more effort and does more for us than a few abstract lines on a canvas which is only considered art because it was done by 'an artist' rather than, say, a chimp with a brush.

5. What do you think is the main reason that video games aren’t taken seriously as an art form?
Snobbery in the art world? Most people not caring about the issue.

6. Do you think that the games themselves can be called art or only its components e.g. graphics, soundtrack, plot etc?
There are elements of many things that can be considered works of art. Film, writing, photography, music etc. Some games will have components that could be considered art, but it would be a rare game which could be considered, as a whole, art.

7. Do you feel that video games can be a medium for art e.g. Minecraft mods, pixel art, etc?
Sure.

8. Do you think that the definition of art can be changed to accommodate controversial new mediums such as video games or interactive art installations?
The definition of art already includes them, it is up to 'the art world' to catch up with new mediums.

9. Do you think that video games will have a lasting effect on future society, and will able to last until then?
Some games help shape law and society as a whole, or reflect the same, just as film and books and plays have in the past. The volume of titles and the 'limited market' may mitigate their lasting impact though.

10. Are there any applications of video games that you feel will be important in the future?
Video games of today use things that 5 or 10 years ago would have been cutting edge computing or hardware - they will continue to do so and in this will help drive the spread of advances in these and related fields.

11. Do you think that new mediums of art in the future will have difficulty being accepted like video games currently?
Quite probably. Despite the art world loving to claim they are 'edgy', 'ground breaking' etc, it is still deeply conservative and entrenched.
